So you’ve chosen to tick the Mexican Caribbean off your angling bucket list. Good for you! With countless species and techniques to explore, fishing the Riviera Maya will put you smack in the middle of one of the most prolific angling destinations on the planet. Couple that with dream-like natural beauty and year-round pleasant weather, and you’ll see why this place is hailed as a bonafide angler’s paradise.

Each year, thousands of hopeful anglers flock to the Riviera Maya to catch the fish of their life. Beginners, experts, fly fishers, and big game hunters – all of them come in search of the big one. Many leave the Yucatán with dreams fulfilled and tales to tell. What is it that makes this strip of land so special? Let’s dive right into it!

What can I catch?

Perched on the lush Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico, the Riviera Maya is a 150-mile stretch of coastline looking out into the mesmerizing, blue Caribbean. Practically, spreading from Cancún in the north to Punta Allen in the south, the Riviera holds a variety of fish species roaming around.

Bonefish

One of the most iconic inshore fish species in the world, the “Ghost of the Flats” is a thing of legends. Anyone who’s ever fished the Riviera Maya knows that local anglers love nothing more than the thrill of chasing some feisty Bonefish. They love really shallow waters, and you’ll find them in abundance in Mexico’s flats.

If you’re looking for the most prolific Bonefishing spots, look no further than the island of Cozumel. Fly fishing in the island’s northern flats is one of the best experiences in all of the Caribbean. Its three spacious lagoons are home to a yearly supply of Bonefish. Head over there from March–May, or in fall for the most productive trip.

Snapper and Grouper

We can’t make a list of the Riviera Maya’s top fish species without including some bottom dwellers. These are the fish that will give you a real run for your money, but that will also have your mouth watering. At the top of the list, we have to mention the iconic Cubera Snapper, known as “Red Snapper” in this part of the world. These hard fighters live in the reefs off the coast of Riviera Maya, where you’ll find them gorging on anything from shrimp to lobster.

As for Grouper, there’s a variety of species that inhabit these beautiful reefs. Dusky, Red, and Black Grouper all love to roam around underwater structures, so you’ll be doing some serious bottom fishing here. You might also run into the giant Goliath Grouper, which is sure to be the experience of a lifetime. However, make sure to release this gentle beast if it ends up on the end of your line!

Amberjack

While we’re on the subject of tasty bottom dwellers, let’s mention another iconic creature – Amberjack. The Great Mayan Reef off the coast of Playa del Carmen holds an abundance of fish, and you’ll find Amberjack here in great numbers. They love roaming around these waters, and the best time to target them is September–March.

These are powerful creatures that are sure to put up a great fight and, as such, they’ve become a favorite of many anglers. The best way to entice their bite is to try out some jigging with a bait fish of your choice. They are aggressive eaters, so be prepared for them to bite hard!

Mahi Mahi

Probably the most photogenic creature underwater, Mahi Mahi is a sight for sore eyes. These stunning colorful fish call the waters of Riviera Maya their home, and you’ll have no issues spotting them all along the coast. They absolutely love basking in the waters of the reefs, meaning you can get to their playgrounds in no time.

The best time to head out on a Mahi Mahi quest is anywhere from March through July. This is when the waters are beautiful and calm, and the only thing breaking the serenity is the fight you’ll get once you hook into this fighter! Along with the battle, you’ll get some delicious dinner at the end of the day, as well as some of the most beautiful photos.

Billfish

Wrapping up our list, these fish are truly something special. They’re a family of some of the most coveted species out there. White Marlin, Blue Marlin, Sailfish, and Swordfish all call these tropical waters their home. If you manage to reel in three different Billfish species in a day, you’ll have a “Billfish Grand Slam” under your belt. Not too bad, eh?

So if this is something that sounds interesting, you’ll be happy to know that you can get all of these species not too far from shore. These incredible hard-fighting beasts are available all year-round, but the best time to target Billfish in these waters is in summer. Head out for some trolling action, and watch their stunning acrobatic leaps as you reel ’em in.

How to Fish the Riviera Maya

This stretch of Caribbean coastline is very diverse, so it’s no wonder that there are lots of ways to explore the area. Over the years, some of these places have become renowned for various types of fishing. You can enjoy many different types of fishing here, so let’s dive into it.

Charter Fishing

There’s nothing that can compare to cruising the turquoise waters of the Caribbean aboard a charter boat. It’s such a beautiful place that you’ll never want your trip to end. Not to mention how productive it is! Heading out with a professional captain is invaluable, especially when it’s your first time exploring this abundant fishery.

Visiting the deep waters off the coast requires you to hop on a boat, whether it’s the Mesoamerican Reefs or the open sea. You’ll get to enjoy your day in stunning nature, basking in the sun, with the wind in your hair. Paints a nice picture, doesn’t it? Add to that the thrill of fighting some of the most prized fish species that live in these waters and filling the bags, and you’ve got yourself an adventure to remember.

Shore Fishing

If you see yourself as more of a stationary angler, you’ll have a great time in the Riviera Maya too. The beaches are as stunning as they get, but they can be packed with tourists, making a fishing adventure a bit harder to come by. Be aware that you can’t cast a line within 250 meters of swimmers. However, there are some places you can visit for some surf fishing, as well as some incredible fly fishing spots!

You can visit Isla Mujeres and Isla Blanca, famous for their fly fishing opportunities. Also, the coastal flats and lagoons around Tulum will allow you to experience inshore action that’s pretty much unrivaled in the Caribbean – and that’s saying a lot. The waters of Ascension Bay are home to an ungodly number of fish you can catch on the fly.

While officially not a part of Riviera Maya, Cancún is a go-to place for shore and inshore fishing in the entire region. There’s a host of lagoons and inlets you can explore.

Depending on the season, you can catch anything from Bonefish and Permit to Snook and Tarpon. Land all of these on the same day, and you’ll achieve the coveted Inshore Grand Slam!

Spearfishing

Are you a real thrill seeker? If you’re looking for a big adrenaline rush, you should consider one of the most primal ways of fishing. We’re talking about spearfishing, of course. It’s becoming increasingly popular on the Riviera Maya, especially around Playa del Carmen, where anglers explore the Great Mayan Reef this way.

A spearfisherman swims in blue waters, looking for fish

It’s not for the faint of heart though, so make sure you find a reputable guide to take you out. You will be free diving, after all, so you want to make sure you’re safe at all times. Rise to the challenge, however, and you’ll be “underwater hunting” for Wahoo, Barracuda, Grouper, Snapper, and other reef inhabitants.

Where to Go Fishing on the Riviera Maya

Starting your coastal journey from the northeastern tip of the peninsula, you’ll see a number of bustling resort towns. In contrast, the southern Riviera Maya is a quieter part of the coast. With ancient ruins jutting out silently from the jungle, this part of the coast seems a world away from the luxury resort towns of the north. Let’s see what some of the best fishing spots on the Riviera Maya are.

An infographic showing the map of Riviera Maya with top fishing spots, including Cancún, Playa del Carmen, Cozumel, and Tulum
  • Cancún: Just on the edge of Riviera Maya lies Cancún, one of the most popular tourist destinations in all of the Caribbean. It gives entrance to a key migratory route for the world’s most exciting pelagic fish. If you thought the town was packed with action, wait until you get on the water. Billfish, Mackerel, Wahoo, Mahi Mahi, Snapper Grouper – they’re all in the cards!
  • Playa del Carmen: The channel formed between the coast of Playa and the island of Cozumel creates a giant game fish superhighway. This means that just a few hundred feet from the coast, the ocean floor suddenly and substantially plummets. For you, that spells offshore fishing as close to the coast as possible.
  • Cozumel: Just across from Playa del Carmen, Cozumel stands as Mexico’s largest Caribbean island. Nestled amidst the largest reef system in the Americas, this island is teeming with all manner of marine life. The area is rich in coral formations, making it an ideal feeding ground for a large number of fish species.
  • Tulum: Further down the coastline, the landscape shifts into an untamed, but more tranquil one. Tulum might be quieter than its northern neighbors, but you certainly wouldn’t know it by its waters. There’s an astounding variety of fish to see in these parts. You’ll have no crowds to contend with, so you’ll pretty much have all this bounty to yourself.

Fishing Regulations on the Riviera Maya

If you want to fish with a local captain, you should know that most fishing charters on the Riviera Maya cover the licensing for you, and simply include it in the overall price. However, you should still check with your captain to make sure that they’ve taken care of the licensing. Otherwise, you can easily get a permit online.

An infographic including a vector of a boat, the FishingBooker logo, the state flag of Mexico, and text stating "Riviera Maya Fishing Regulations: What You Need to Know" against a blue background

Fishing from land, on the other hand, doesn’t require a permit. But each angler can only have one line in the water at a time. If you’re bottom fishing, you can use up to four hooks on a single vertical line at a time. Your daily bag limit is 10 fish per person, but there’s a catch. You can bag no more than five specimens of a single species, and only one sample of Marlin, Sailfish, and Swordfish per day, which counts as half of your daily limit.

Similarly, you can keep two Dorado (Mahi Mahi), Tarpon, Shad, or Roosterfish in a single day, amounting to half of the said 10-fish requirement. Basically, this means that one Marlin and two Dorados, or one Sailfish and one Swordfish would count as your actual catch limit on any given day. Of course, you can practice catch and release even after you reach your bag limit. Keep in mind that many captains do practice a strict “catch and release” policy for all Billfish.

Riviera Maya: A Fishing Hotspot for Every Angler

Most good fishing destinations “specialize” in one kind of angling. The great places excel in as many as two, sometimes even three. But when you find a place that offers pretty much every form of angling known to man, you know that you’re talking about one special place. Riviera Maya is one of those places.

    Hi John,

Thank you for reading our blog and reaching out.
The area south of Puerto Aventuras toward Akumal is suitable for shore fishing. Kantenah Beach, for example, will do the trick, just make sure to be at least 250 meters (275 yards) from any swimmers and beachgoers when casting.
    Hope this helped.

Hey Everyone, I actually live in Queretaro, Mexico and every year since we moved (some 10 years ago) I only fish Zihuatanejo and with my brothers over there. But, this year the girls are bringing me to Gringoland to see things. I have 3 days of fishing planned and pretty much have caught everything in the sea except a grouper. Is it best to vertical jig for these fish and we will be there in December for about 10 days??? Also, I never worry about the tide in ZIH but may play a bigger factor in Playa del Carmen so should I focus my time with the boat during the incoming tide during our stay and the tidal schedule. Thanks and Semper!!!

Hello, on the top of my husband’s bucket list is to catch a wahoo! We were looking at either Villa del Palmar in northern Cancun or somewhere on Isla Mujeres…possibly in November. Is either location better than the other for Wahoo fishing? Average cost to do that? Is there a month where the chances would be better? Thanks in advance!

    Hi Nancy,

November should be a good time to go for Wahoo! There’s not much difference between Cancun and Isla Mujeres, it’s just the ride that’s slightly shorter if you head out from the island.

To catch Wahoo, you’ll generally want to spend 6 to 8 hours on the water. The prices range from $400 to $900 depending on the duration and the level of comfort you’d like to enjoy.

Usually, 8-hour trips are only about $100 – $150 more expensive than the 6-hour ones, but those 2 extra hours on the water can improve your chances significantly if you can handle spending the day offshore.

Take a look at a few of our partners in Cancun, it should give you a better idea of what you can expect:

    Hi Kim,

Andriana here, jumping in for Sean. The only place that could be a potential fit for your client is the Puerto Aventuras Marina, which is a half an hour drive from Tulum. If you’re looking for dry storage facilities, there aren’t any options for it in Tulum.

    I hope this helps, Kim.

    All the best!

Hello. My family and I are planning a trip to Cozumel and Akumal. My son, who is 15, really wants to spear lionfish. I have seen a number of dive shops that offer tours, but can we go on our own from shore. I should note that we are aware that there are some areas that are closed to fishing. Thanks in advance!

    Hi Jim,
If you’re spearfishing for the first time in that area, it’s always better to team up with licensed instructors and charter operators. Not only will your guides provide you with the necessary equipment, tips, and permits, but they’ll give you local insight on how to go about your underwater hunt. You can, however, give it a try yourselves, just make sure you respect the local rules and regulations. Please get in touch with the authorities to obtain the license and consult about anything else related to your adventure.
    Hope this helped.

Hi, Our family of five (two adults and kids ages 16, 14, and 10) will be in Cozumel the first week of April. Our son is a fishing nut โ€” doesn’t matter, rivers, creeks, lakes, he fishes it. We have tried deep sea fishing in Cancun and Costa Rica and both times he got terribly sea sick. I am wondering about fishing in Cozumel โ€” if we might have better luck if we stay closer to the shore. Should we try bottom fishing? Will sport fishing in Cozumel be just as hard for our seasick kiddo as it was in Cancun?

    Hi Jen,

Thanks for reaching out! There’s certainly a smaller chance of your son getting seasick if you stay close to shore. Also, with bottom fishing, there’s less driving around, which might help him cope with being on a boat.

You might also want to consult an MD and see if seasickness medicine would help your son, it’s what anglers usually opt for if they’re prone to boat nausea.

Good luck on your trip to Cozumel, it’s a wonderful place!

Hey! Coming to Riviera Maya in March and would love to go Fly fishing for Tarpon, Bones, GTโ€™s. I see a lot of Charters leave out of Cancun, is there services that will pick us up from our Hotel in Riviera Maya? Also, there are four of us including my kids 7/ 10. Is that too many to fit on a flats boat? Thanks for the info!!

    Hello Justin,

You’ll love Riviera Maya in March, there’s a lot to enjoy and fish for in the area.

I’ve taken a closer look at our offer, and it seems that there aren’t that many guides that offer pick-up from Riviera Maya, I’ve found this option for you. You can also check in with the most popular charters in the area like this one and this one.

You’re right about the capacity of the flats boats because they can usually have up to 3 people on board. However, since you’ll be coming with two kids, it might be doable to have your whole family on board. The best thing you can do is get in touch with the local captains I’ve recommended and see what they have to say.

I hope this helps, Justin, and that you have a wonderful time in Riviera Maya.

    All the best!

I am coming to the Akumal area with my two young sons (4.5 and 7.5) in Mid March and love the idea of them getting to experience fishing. We live in MN and have no skills in this area – but shoveling snow, we could teach a thing or two! Are they too young? What would you recommend? Send just the 7.5 yo out with one parent? Thank you!

    Hi Laura,

Thank you for reading our blog and reaching out.
We’re thrilled you’ll be exploring Akumal area soon (and getting away from the snow a bit ;))

Don’t worry about them being too young, almost all charters are kid-friendly. But if you’d rather be safe than sorry, here’s what you can do:
    – Choose a shorter trip for starters and take it from there. You’ll have trips from 2 hours to extended full-day adventures at your disposal, but if this is their first time, introduce them gradually to bluewater fishing.
    – Bigger boats are more stable which helps if the kids are prone to seasickness, so book a comfier charter.
    – Last but not least, don’t hesitate to contact the captains directly and consult with them on how to bring your kids aboard. No one will give you a better piece of advice than the local captains. Based on their experience, boat, weather conditions, your preferences and skills, they’ll be able to suggest the best scenario.

So, here’s a list of our Akumal fishing charters for you to browse and chat with them, and feel free to reach out to our Customer Support if you happen to need help with booking one (or more :D) charter.

    Hope this helped.

My ten year old sons desperately wants to fish from shore during our holiday next week, weโ€™re staying at Grand Sirenis.
Iโ€™m aware of the no fishing within 250m of swimmers, but otherwise heโ€™s able to cast? Any suggestions for what type of lures? (Weโ€™re not fishers ourselves, just him and want to appease his hobby). Thanks for any input!

    Hi Cali,

Thank you for reaching out. It’s fantastic that you support your son’s hobby, especially fishing! As far as I know, you can cast your line there if it’s not within 250m of swimmers and past the flags.

As for the lure, I suggest picking something like squid from the hotel/resort and using it as bait. Alternatively, you can look for snails by the rocks or pack your son’s favorite spoons. He can target smaller Snapper and Grouper, as well as Barracuda if the conditions allow. If your boy’s into fly fishing, you can explore the area’s flats and target Tarpon if you’re interested!

    I hope this helps.

    Hello Shaunis,

Playa del Carmen is a great place to be in January, you’re going to have a lot of fun. When it comes to surf fishing, there are a lot of beaches around your hotel, and you should definitely give them a try. Bear in mind that locals go fishing very early in the morning, which is a good idea because you don’t have to worry about swimmers and can just focus on fishing, and the sunrise.

You could also venture south, past all the resorts (after Playacar Beach) and you’ll be treated to some peace and quiet, as well as good fishing. The main downside to this is that there are about 8 miles from your hotel to Playacar, so keep that in mind when planning your fishing outing.

I hope this helps Shaunis, have the best time in Playa del Carmen!

Hello, i just booked a trip to stay at the Grand Palladium Complex. It looks like there is a fair amount of undeveloped shoreline both north and south of the resort including the xpu-ha cove. I read the area around akumal is off limits due to a sanctuary. Can the fly fishing off of the reefs in these coves be productive near the resort? Do any of the panga boats that leave from akumal offer in shore fishing? I’ve also heard the xcacel beach area can be productive. Is it legal to fish there? If I can swing it, i’ll be trying to do a day with Pesca Maya but not sure it’ll be in the cards on this trip with the family. Likely more short windows in the early morning and just looking to get out and walk and cast a little.

    Hi Adam,

Lisa here. Thank you for reaching out.

Regarding the Xpu-ha area, I’d recommend fly fishing for Bonefish right off the beach (just make sure there aren’t any swimmers nearby.) If you walk to either end of the beach, you can fish the cove. Note that the north end is pretty shallow, while the south end is rocky.

As for the panga boats, I believe the best idea is to ask them directly. I’m not aware whether any of them are licensed, though, so you might want to check that in advance.

Since Xcacel is a sanctuary for sea turtles, so the whole area is protected and fishing is completely banned.

    Hope this helps!

We are looking at staying at the El Dorado Royale – Adults Only (a little bit south of Puerto Morelos) in mid-January. I am interested in bringing a flyrod and doing a little fishing from shore. Is there decent fishing within walking distance? Any specific direction or landmark I should look for? Any suggestions on fly patterns to bring with?

Thank you very much!

    Hi Adam,

You can fish anywhere along the coast if you find a secluded spot and cast at least 250 meters away from any swimmers. Fishing from your area can be a bit tricky due to a large number of beachgoers, but there’s a cove just to the south of El Dorado Royale worth checking out! In case you plan on renting a car, head to Puerto Morelos as angling is slightly better there. There’s even a well-maintained fishing pier from which you can cast safely. As for the fly patterns, January is the perfect time to go after Bonefish, so give it a try with Crazy Charlie Pink ๐Ÿ˜‰

    Hope this helped.

Our travel agent recommended we wait to try to book a trip when we arrive. I’m thinking we will be out of luck getting a charter if we do that. Iโ€™d love to if time permits! Iโ€™ll usually be getting up to go fishing with the sunrise. Once everyone wakes up fishing will be pretty much over for the day :(.
So, I figure Iโ€™ll have about 2-3 hours to fish each morning. Was hoping Iโ€™d be able to catch something front then beach in front of the hotel.

    Brad,

You’re right, anglers absolutely have to be early birds in like 90% of the time. Although it’s worth it, isn’t it?

My suggestion is when you arrive, ask the hotel staff if they allow beach fishing early in the morning. If not, you can always explore some of the nearby places, even if it’s just for a couple of hours. I hope you get the chance to fish there (and catch something, of course!)

    Tight lines,

    Hello

I was disappointed when my Resort ( Grand Sirenis Riviera maya ) did not allow me to fish from the reefs in front of the hotel, even it is very far from swimming area. i am planning to come with family and friends the first week on May 2022. I am not sure what to do? Can you help me with ideas,? I am not sure if there is a fishing spot close the hotel . Or I need to take a taxi, I am really new to the area and frankly worried to go somewhere I do not know. Your help is much appreciated. . Cheers

    Hi Tony,

Thanks for getting in touch. When it comes to how far you need to be from a swimming area to fish, 250 yards or so tends to be the rule of thumb. Have you considered going on a trip with a local charter boat? That would definitely save you a lot of hassle.

Hi thanks for all the info, I am staying at the Azul beach resort and wanted to fish from shore. I brought all my own gear and tackle with some small shrimp lures and what not. Am I able to fish anywhere along the beaches no problem as long as there are no swimmers in sight(250 meter rule)?

    Hi Daniel,

Thanks for the kind comment and your good question. Fishing along all the beaches near Azul Beach Resort is techniclly legal, but as the area is full of hotels and resorts, you may find it difficult to find a spot away from swimmers. The Bahia Petempich Beach just to the north could be better than in the resort itself, or head down to Puerto Morelos for a better chance, along with a public pier that could help you enhance your chances! I hope this helps.

    Hi Sarah,

Thank you for reaching out. You can go shore fishing around El Dorado Maroma, targeting baby Tarpon, Snook, and Barracuda. Will you guys consider renting a car and drive a bit south? There are other beaches with nice fishing nearby as well.

    Hope this helps!

Hi! My name is David, and I will be staying in the Puerto Aventuras area at the Barcelo Maya resort from December 27th through January 1st.

Iโ€™m hoping to go fly fishing for a day while there and Iโ€™d love to target Bonefish, Snook, Tarpon, and Permit if I am good enough ๐Ÿ˜‚

Are there any fly fishing specific guides/charters out of that area?

    Hi Davidm

Lisa here. Thank you for reaching out. I’m pretty sure you’re good enough to land Bonefish, Snook, Tarpon, Permit, and a lot of other fish, even if you’ve never held a fishing rod in your life! I always say it takes the right guide to show you the ropes and take you to the best spots.

Take a look at the list of charters here. There are a lot of options to choose from, from shorter trips to full-day adventures. I’ve filtered the search results to ‘fly fishing’ only.

Let me know if you’d like us to get in touch with you to help you pick a fly fishing trip for you!

Hello! I want to go fishing!! However, I can no longer handle the monsters that can be caught offshore and I am wondering if there are any piers/docks to fish from. I am handicapped so I struggle to walk any distance. I want to book my vacation so that I can once again enjoy the thrill of the catch and will stay anywhere from Cancun to Puerto Adventures. I love all of the areas, so it really makes no difference, I would just like to spend a couple of days of something that I used to be able to enjoy.

    Hi Eileen,

Thank you for reaching out! There are so many fishing opportunities you can enjoy without having to go too far offshore and even catch a few monsters (maybe not Sailfish, but still something interesting!)

There are various pierces you can fish from throughout Riviera Maya. Puerto Aventura, for example, has lots of shore fishing available there.

Do you have any specific location in mind for your vacation? Would you be able to fish from a wheelchair-friendly charter boat?

Let us know if we can help you pick a charter!

Thank you so much for the very informative article. A group of us are going to Puerto Morelos for a week in early November and then a week in Punta Sam(just north of Cancun). I was wondering if anyone has done any shore fishing in either of those 2 places recently? I was planning on bringing a 9″ shore rod with a 4000series reel along with a 6’6″ medium action rod with a 2500series reel. Tackle would include a variety of bucktails/swim jigs w/ white and chartreuse trailers, spoons, top water poppers/plugs and some live bait rigs. Any advice or tips(ie. any other recommended tackle) for this type of fishing would be greatly appreciated! Thank you, in advance, for your time!

Sean,

Thanks for the article. I’m heading to Riviera Maya (Dreams Riviera Cancun Resort & Spa), and want to try some shore fishing. A little unique problem in that I don’t want to check luggage, and rod won’t fit. I don’t want to really get a telescoping rod. You know if you’re able to find a place close to rent a rod? Thanks for any assistance. Like to go for barracuda, jacks, bonefish. But whatever really.

I’m not sure about rentals to be honest, but I would recommend that you check if some of the better tackle shops are offering the service.

For example, you can check out Blue Bite in Cancun or Nautimar in Puerto Morelos. Even if you’re not able to rent poles from them directly, I’m sure that they’ll be able to point you in the right direction.

The local regulations state that you need to be at least 250 meters from any swimmers when fishing. That’s why I’d say that fishing at morning or dusk shouldn’t be a problem. Still, I’d make sure to check with the hotel, just to stay on the safe side.

Hope you’ll have a great time!

There’s a number of fishing charter operators in the area, most of which are located in the nearby town of Puerto Aventuras. Is there any particular type of fishing experience or species you’d like to go for? This would help us narrow down our search and give you a good recommendation.

    Hi Thomas,

    Thanks for reading.

While fishing in the hotel zones is not allowed in Riviera Maya, there are multiple coastline locations where you’ll be able to wet the line. There’s actually a rocky outcrop just to the south of your hotel where people like to fish from. Please note that the local regulations state that you must be at least 250 meters from any swimmers when fishing. That’s why it’s probably best if you go out early in the morning.

As far as licenses go, you won’t need one for shore fishing, but the same doesn’t go for fishing from a kayak. Fishing charters typically include licenses in the trip price, so if you’re interested in catching bigger fish, take a look at what the local captains are offering.

I hope you’ll find this helpful.

    Hi Thomas,

Nice to hear from you again.

I’m sorry for not explaining that clearly enough. The point I was referring to is located around a mile to the south. There’s a protruding bank where you can cast a line when the tide allows it. Alternatively, you can visit the secluded beach around half way to Punta Maroma. That area doesn’t get a lot of swimmers early in the morning, so you should be able to find some good fishing opportunities there.

Sorry once again for the confusion. Tight lines!

    Hi Cole,

    Thanks for reading.

There’s a lot to cover there, but if you’re planning on fishing from the shore, the first thing you’ll need to cover is a longer rod. Rods longer than 10 feet are recommended, because they’ll allow you to cast further. In terms of reels, you don’t need to go too heavy, but make sure that your reel is saltwater resistant. You can go with sizes anywhere from 2000 to 3000, depending on the size of fish you want to catch.

As far as lures go, it really depends on the fish you’re after. You can go with something versatile like a medium sized plug or spoon. Topwater shore fishing can be very productive with poppers, but it will need a bit of skill if you’re fishing with a longer rod. My recommendation is to check one of the bait and tackle shops in Playa to ask what’s been working lately.

Oh, and remember to keep a distance of at least 250 meters from any swimmers โ€“ those are the local shore fishing rules.

I hope you’ll find this helpful.

    Hi Crystal,

    Thanks for reading.

There are a number of hotels in the Riviera Maya area that your son can fish around. They don’t necessarily offer fishing docks of their own, but rather have tucked away beach areas people can fish from. One such area is around Kantenah Beach and El Dorado hotel, just south of Puerto Aventuras. One important thing to keep in mind that the local regulations say that you need to be at least 250 meters (275 yards) from any swimmers when fishing.

Let me know if you need any charter recommendations and I’ll have our customer service team reach out.

Hello!

My family staying near Akumal the 2nd week of March 2021. My 8 year old son is obsessed with fishing, but we’ve never fished in the Riviera Maya area. He and I are looking to get a guide to take us on a half-day or day-long trip. We’re flexible as to which day we go. We’re NOT bringing any gear with us. He’s been fishing for several years, so he can cast, reel, and bait a hook. What would you recommend for us? I think my preference would be to fish closer to shore (as opposed to deep sea fishing).

thank you!

As for the location, I’d recommend fishing out of Cozumel because its lagoons are a little more secluded compared to the ones on the mainland. I’ve forwarded your inquiry to our customer service team, so that they can help you find the right charter.

    Hi Tyler,

    Thanks for reading.

Shore fishing should be great in the entire area around your hotel. There’s a secluded cove just to the south of El Dorado Royale that you can check out, just keep in mind that the rules say that you need to be at least 250 meters from any swimmers when fishing. Shore fishing around this time will give you an opportunity to catch some Cubera Snapper as well as Barracuda.

If you’re fishing a rocky area, my recommendation is to go with a 3-way rig with a bank sinker. For baits, shrimp or cut squid should serve you well. There are a few supermarkets in Puerto Morelos where you can stock up. While you’re in town, you can check out one of the local docks and cast a few lines from there.

    I hope this helps.

    Have a good one!

    Hi Craig,

    Thanks for reading.

According to local fishing regulations, you need to keep a distance of at least 250 meters from any swimmers when shore fishing. Since most of the area around your resort is dotted with other hotels, I’m afraid that you’ll need to walk to a more secluded area to find a good shore fishing spot. The good news is that you don’t need a fishing license to fish from the beach in Riviera Maya.

I’d recommend checking out the beach a couple of miles north of your resort. If you don’t mind the distance, the southern tip of Playacar beach is another spot where anglers like to fish from the shore. The wooden fishing pier just off 14 street in Playa used to be a popular fishing spot, but sadly, it’s no longer accessible due to beach erosion. There are a few larger, concrete piers in town, but I’d recommend asking what the rules are regarding fishing from these at your resort.

The best shore fishing usually happens at sunrise and sundown. The fish on the bite, and there should be no swimmers around at this time.

I hope you’ll find this helpful.

    Hi Mark,

    Thanks for reading.

Generally speaking, the entire coastline between Puerto Aventuras and Akumal is great for shore fishing. The only thing you’ve got to watch out for is not to cast your line in the vicinity of swimmers or on private property. For this reason, I’d recommend you visit the beaches south of the hotel zone.

The good thing is that shore fishing in Riviera Maya doesn’t require you to have a fishing license.

As far as fly fishing guides are concerned, there are plenty of options in and around Akumal. Should you decide to hire a fishing guide, your license will be covered by the captain.

I hope you’ll find this helpful.

we recently visited Tulum and while snorkelling 30 feet off the shores at Hotel Esparanza we saw a larger siver fish. It was on the bottom, appeared to be 6 feet in length, it was silver with a fairly rounded mouth. This fish had a fair girth as well. We have been searching for what type of fish this was, I say baracuda but my wife doesnt think the mouth was pointed enough.
it saw us above and slowly swam past while watching us. What fish was this?

    Hi Scot,

What a mystery! Did you notice if it was solid silver, or did it have stripes?

It sure sounds like a Barracuda to me. The behavior seems right, too.

The only other thing it could have been is a Tarpon, although they don’t usually get that big in Tulum.

    What does everyone else think?

Hi. I am a travel agent. I have client who will be staying at the Grand Bahia Principe Tulum and they want to shore fish by the resort. Is this even possible? I read about the 250 meter rule, but is there a place nearby to fish? Thanks.

    Hi Jill,

There are plenty of places to wade fish in the lagoons around Tulum. The surf fishing is also consistently good, as long as you can get away from the crowds.

However, in my opinion, Tulum is one of the best flats fisheries on the planet. Is has an incredible Permit bite and some great Bonefishing, too. If your clients are keen anglers, they should take the opportunity to explore these waters properly with a guide.

Our Customer Service team can happily help your clients arrange a trip.

    I hope that helps!

Hi,
We are just looking for a regular resort not a fishing lodge. It doesn’t even have to be on the Cancun side of Mexico. My husband just asked me to book somewhere with good fishing within walking distance of the resort.
Thanks all!

    Hi Jennifer,

I’m afraid I don’t know specific resorts in Mexico too well.

I would say that you can escape a lot of the crowds by heading south of Cancun, closer to Puerto Aventuras or Playa Del Carmen. That should give your husband more space to fish.

Sorry I can’t be of more help!

Hi,
We are looking to go to the Rivera Maya/Cancun area in January or Feb can you suggest an all inclusive resort that has great shore fishing? My husband and son are obsessed with fishing! They usually charter a boat for one or two days and shore fish daily.

Thanks so much!

    Hi Jennifer,

Are you looking for a fishing lodge, or a normal vacation resort with a private beach where you can fish?

Finding good shore fishing isn’t usually a problem. The issue is finding a place where you can fish.

Resort staff aren’t usually that fond of people fishing on their beaches, so the best spots are often away from the resort strips.

You should also bear in mind that it’s illegal to fish within 250 meters (820 feet) of beach-goers or swimmers. Chances are, most beaches will have too many people to fish right by the resort itself.

Sorry I can’t be of more help. Does anyone else have a recommendation of a good resort for shore fishing?

Hi, I’ve been trying to find information on fishing in the Cancun, Playa, etc. area and am so glad I finally found your site – Love it!
I am moving to Akumal from Nashville Tennessee and would like to start fishing in the area. I’m interested, at least for now, in shore fishing in or near Akumal but since I am new to the area and don’t know anyone yet who fishes I was wondering if you knew of any places I could go to get started? Also, any recommendations for places in Akumal, Tulum, or Playa that sell fishing rods and other supplies would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

    Hi Rick,

Congratulations on the move down to paradise!

When it comes to shore fishing spots, it’s more a case of finding somewhere away from the crowds or resorts. The fishing’s great all along Riviera Maya, but by law you can’t fish within 250 meters (820 feet) of any beach-goers or swimmers. On top of that, a lot of hotels can get a little unfriendly to anglers who aren’t staying with them.

That being said, Akumal is away from the big tourist hubs farther north, so you should be able to find a quiet beach. My advice would be to do a little recon on Google Maps and look for the less built up spots, then head out and give them a shot.

In terms of buying tackle and rods, your best bet is probably Artes de Pesca up in Playa. If you’re looking for something more specialist, you could also try contacting some of the local fishing lodges.

Sorry I can’t be more helpful on the fishing spots. Let us know how you get on!

Great info ! Iโ€™ve been spearfishing in Playa for a few months now, and Iโ€™ve come across a lot of fish. Iโ€™m hooked !
My concern though, is i have difficulty separating the ones I can catch from the ones I canโ€™t !
Do you have any info on brochures or documents available for a better knowledge of Playa Del Carmenโ€™s fishes ?

    Hi Julien,

    Thanks for reading.

As you probably know, the best catches in the Playa Del Carmen area include Permit, Wahoo, Barracuda, Snapper, Grouper, Mackerel, Lionfish and Pompano. You can check all of these fish on our fish pages.

You can also check out this local diving guide for more species information.

Lastly, to find out more about local fishing regulations and bag limits, please take a look at the CONAPESCA website.

I hope you’ll find this helpful.

    Have a great day!

    Hi Amber,

    Thanks for reading.

There are a number of great shore fishing spots around Cancun. Out of these, I would recommend Puerto Morelos as the best one.

The fishing is great, especially for Barracuda and Jacks. The scenery is breathtaking, and it’s just a 40 minute drive away from Cancun. You won’t need a fishing license for fishing from shore, but you’ll need one if you decide to hire a charter.

    I hope that helps.

    Hey Steve,

    Thanks for reading.

There are a few small beaches around 10 minutes to the north of your hotel that you might want to try out.

These shouldn’t have any swimmers, so you should be able to cast freely. There’s always a chance of hooking some Jacks, Snook, Permits, or Triggerfish.

For baiting, I’d advise using shrimp. Perhaps you can even get some from your hotel. Jigs and poppers should work fine, too.

Make sure to use heavy leaders to keep the Barracuda from biting through your line.

I hope you’ll find that helpful.

    Have a good one!

I am heading down to Cancun for 7 days of sunshine during the last week of June. Hopefully Fishingbooker has some great fishing advice. I am looking for 2 things.

1. I am looking for a long 1 day charter for just one person. None of my family likes to fish, so a big deep sea trip is out of the option because of cost. I know the season around that time is great for bonefish. Any recommendations?

2. For the days I will be not on a charter, are their any places that rent gear for just surf fishing? I’d love to get onto some game fish or shark from shore assuming that I am allowed to do so in the area I am staying.

    Hello Nico,

    Thanks for reading!

Absolutely, June is an excellent time to catch Bonefish. You’ll be able to catch a lot of them around Isla Mujeres and in the Nichuptรฉ Lagoon. If you’re up for a challenge, you can even go for Tarpon, which is also great at this time of year. Since you’ll be booking just for yourself, I think something like Cancun Light Tackle & Fly Fishing Tours would suit you best.

For surf fishing, I wouldn’t recommend trying Nichuptรฉ Lagoon, simply because there aren’t a lot of access points. The best way to go is to explore some of the local restaurants on the water. You won’t need a fishing license, just makes sure to keep away from any swimmers.

I hope you’ll find this helpful.

Hello, my husband and I are vacationing to Riviera Maya in Sept for are anniversary. We are staying at grand riveria princess resort, we have been on several deep sea fishing trips in gulf shores and galvenston but this will be the first time our children are not with us!
I know my husband usually goes with a charter that the kids will enjoy and where they are pretty much guaranteed to catch something, so he usually is reeling in bait fish instead of what would be his dream catch. I’m wanting to surprise him and let him have a real fishing trip just for him this time! It will be just the two of us, any suggestions for who to go with? Also I’m working with a nurses salary not a doctor’s so I don’t what to spend a huge amount. Thanks you so much in advance for any advice. Melissa

    Hello Melissa,

    Thanks for reading.

    What a great anniversary present!

There are a number of fantastic fishing guides very close to your resort.

If it’s going to be just the two of you, I would say a 25-foot boat would be more than enough. It will get you offshore, but it won’t come with the price tag of a bigger vessel.

Please take a look at Gardi Crew and Fishing Al Gusto. These two of our best Captains in the area.

Billfish will sadly be out of season by the time you arrive, but you’ll be able to get some great Amberjack, Cobia or Barracuda action.

I hope this helps. For more recommendations, you can contact our Customer Service Team.

    Hey Philipp,

Shore fishing can be a little hit and miss because of the crowds (common sense and the law says that you can only fish a fair distance away from them.) But you can get some good results if you head up to the north part of the beach and bring some top water plugs – this should attract the attention of the local Jacks. You’ll find the best fishing by far is early morning and later in the evening ๐Ÿ™‚

I’m coming to Cozumel with my wife and 4 kids ages 11-15 in March. The three boys are fishing crazy right now and they are wondering if they can fish from shore and if there is a place to rent fishing equipment? We are staying at the Occidental which is on the southwest shore. I’m planning on taking them bottom fishing on a charter one of the days but would like to know if they can shore/pier fish somewhere near our resort. What are their options if any?

    Hi Tom,

Sounds like a great trip! When thinking of places to shore fish, you will need to bear in mind that a large part of the Western and Southern parts of Cozumel are a Marine Park. This extends south from the International Pier, around Punta Sur, and up a small part of the eastern coastline to Punta Chiqueros. Here, disturbing the reefs in any way is prohibited – this includes fishing. So it looks like shore fishing near your resort will not be possible, unfortunately, although you will be able to do so if you travel to the north of the island.

The good news is, fishing charters can travel beyond the protected area. If you would like any help finding a good guide for your bottom fishing trip, please get in touch!

Thanks for this site! I’m headed to Akumal (south of Playa) in a few weeks, staying at a beach house. I’m bringing a spinning rod and wondered about either fishing from the shore or from a kayak away from beachgoers. I’ve done a fair amount of fishing, but most of my ocean fishing has been with guides. I’d love any links or advice you might have about techniques, fish species, and other advice. If you know of a guide in the area who might show me the ropes, I’d be happy to hire him. Thanks for this great site.

Thanks for your kind words! We’re not sure exactly what you’ll find at the cut, although it definitely sounds like a fun place to explore. Fishing with shrimp is bound to get results, but as far as lures go we’d suggest bringing along some rubber tailed jigs with a few different lead heads and some top water lures to be ready for every eventuality! We always recommend speaking to local fishermen to find out what the bite is like and what techniques the locals have been using lately.
Hope you have a great vacation!

What sort of trip are you planning? Captain Rick has a range of boats, including this nice Bertram that might suit you – full day trips are $690. If you’re looking at something a little cheaper given it will just be yourself fishing, you could try Juancho, a smaller boat located a short drive away at Playa del Carmen that runs full day trips at under $500.

I am taking my family to Playa Del Secreto (in between Puerto Morelos and Playa Del Carmen) in early May. My father would like to shore fish in front of the condo we rented. The area where we are staying looks pretty remote. I read some articles that say no fishing license is needed for shore fishing. He would like to bring a cast net to catch his own bait. Is that allowed? We’ll probably charter a boat for bottom fishing one day. Any recommendations?

Hi, a couple friends and I are staying at the Grand Bahia Principe Coba in Riviera Maya in June we all love fishing and would love to do some fishing from shore. We are wondering if this is allowed off of the beach, and what we would need in terms of licenses? We also know that the hotel rents out paddle boats, how good are our chances of getting some fishing gear out on a paddle boat to get away from the busy beach? Also which fish would we most likely be targeting?

    Hi Nicolas,

Thanks for commenting! Shore fishing is allowed off the beach and the law states that it must be done at least 250m away from swimmers. Best to find a secluded one if possible. Licenses aren’t necessary. As for the paddle boat fishing, you will need to check with your hotel if something like that is allowed. Species you can get from the shore will most likely be small snappers, possible ‘cudas and JC’s. Keep in mind that beach fishing is not done too much down there.
You can also consider trying some spearfishing in the nearby beautiful and historical town of Tulum, or some big game fishing for very affordable prices in the nearby Puerto Aventuras.

Hi Lesley, no Roosterfish on the Atlantic side of Mexico unfortunately. Bonefish, Tarpon and Jacks should be alright throughout the summer, though this region isn’t very good for surf fishing and few people do it. Big game fishing is what’s popular here and large boats make the rough seas easier to handle. If you’re fixed on fishing from the beach however, you should consider Playa del Carmen/Cozumel rather than Cancun. Let our customer service team know if you need help!

Hi David, thank you for the comment! Tulum is a very interesting choice for a family vacation.

Weather is actually not looking that hot by the end of March – plenty of showers and some storms are predicted. If you’re bound to get wet, we’d recommend going all the way and trying out some spearfishing with Spearfishing Today. This is a great family activity. If not, then definitely go for offshore rather than flats. We have plenty of boats to choose from in Playa del Carmen/Puerto Aventuras.

Either way, let our customer service team know what you’re looking for and they’ll take care of you!

    Hi Jason,
I’d recommend taking a look at Flying Fish . This is located about half an hour north of where you’ll be staying – it’s a popular charter that catches lots of game fish.
I hope you have a great trip!

    Hi Scott,
Thanks for your comment. Mid March is a great time to fish for Barracuda and Sailfish in the Riviera Maya. Blue and White Marlins are just coming into season then, so you might be lucky with Billfish! Otherwise there should be good fishing for Mahi Mahi, Bonito, Albacore Tuna and Wahoo.
Which area are you planning to stay in?
Grand Slam is one of our most popular charter boats in Cozumel, while if you’re staying in Cancun take a look at Don Quino. Juancho is popular with customers and is based in Playa del Carmen.
I hope you and your son have a great trip!

Hi! I am surprising my husband with a trip to Mexico for our one year anniversary in early April. I am torn between Cancun, Playa Del Carmen, and Cozumel. He’s already been to Cabo on a fishing trip so I wanted to try the other side of Mexico. He does a lot of bass fishing but will fish anything.. Which area do you think would be the best fishing experience and where he would be able to catch more fish…?

Hi Beth, thank you for your comment. Sounds like a great surprise! To be honest, fishing is pretty much the same in those waters, with excellent charter guide services all around, so your question comes down to where you’d like to stay. When you get that set up, reach out to our customer service team and we’ll help you find the perfect charter.
A quick tip – Cancun will be the most expensive, Cozumel is in the middle and Playa del Carmen the most affordable. Click the links to see the guides I’m referring to.

Hi,
We are planning a trip to Playacar in the middle of January, and hoping to do some shore fishing while over there. We are planning to take a couple of 10ft spinning rods, fix spool reels loaded with braid, assorted lures, shallow diving poppers, and float and light terminal tackle.
We would be grateful if anybody who has had experience with this tackle could share any tips, or has any advice for us?

    Hi Mike,
This charter runs from very close to your hotel. If you’re happy to travel a bit further for a really luxurious service this charter in Cancun looks like it could provide a great anniversary experience. Another great choice would be this charter running from Playa del Carmen.
In May you should be in with a good chance of getting close to some billfish like Marlins and Sailfish – as you said, this is a great time to come!

Hello , Im coming down with a friend Feb 13-20th of 2016 and staying at Azule Sensatori in Riviera Maya. I am a full time fishing guide in Charleston SC and try to take a couple of charters everywhere I go. I really want to catch roosterfish on light tackle. I like to fly fish as well but really prefer gear fishing. If I go a second day I would like to do some Tarpon fishing. We have Tarpon, but the numbers are not like they are down there. Any suggestions?
Thanks,

    Hi Joel,
If you’re still looking for charters in the area, Comocean is located very close to your hotel and is very popular. While they tend to offer deep sea fishing (as this is what a lot of their customers are after) they also fish with light tackle and know their stuff closer to the shore as well.

Hello, and thank you for this website/blog!

My wife and I will be arriving in Cozumel just after Christmas this year, and are interested in booking a 1/2 day bottom fishing trip. The cruise line offers this for only $80, and I would appreciate your input/advice.
Sadly, there isn’t any deep-sea fishing trips available, as we are only on shore for the day, and leave Cozumel at 6pm. The details are:
Leave for fishing about 8:30am, fishing for 2 1/2 hours, returning to port around 12pm.
This should give us about 4-5 more hours on shore in Cozumel.
Do you think it will be a waste of time?
What kind of fish do you think we will be catching (if any)?

Thanks again!

Hi Brian, thank you for the comment! The minimum length for deep sea charters is 4h, and our offer includes only private charters, which cost drastically more than the rate your cruise operator offers.
Check these out and let us know if you’d consider a private deep sea charter though!

my wife and I will be visiting Cozumel for the last 3 weeks of February 2016. I have seen numerous fishing reports that seem to be a little contradictory. some say sailfish and mahi mahi fishing will not be good at that time, others say it will be good to excellent. what are your thoughts on that?

we are considering a 6 or 8 hour charter when we are there, and will most likely do a combination of trolling and bottom fishing.

these trips donโ€™t come cheap, and so I am wondering what is considered a reasonable trip for the deck hands? also does the captain get a tip as well, or just the deck hand(s)?

thanks

Hi Bill! Thank you for your comment! Mahi is not that good in February, sailfish should be better. Barracuda, amberjack and wahoo should be good at that time as well. Also, this really is a year to year/day to day matter dependent on many factors, hence the mixed reports.
If you’d like to charter with us, I’d recommend the Grand Slam. Let us know, we’ll be happy to help book a trip to remember! As for the tip, the customary amount is 10-20% if you’re happy with the charter. This is for the deckhands, they earn their living this way ๐Ÿ™‚

    Hi Abs,

Don’t give up! As far as I know, the Nichupte lagoon (right in front of Cancun’s Hotel Zone) is a great place for Tarpon, Bonefish, Permit and Snook, depending on when you’re planning on visiting. As for Cozumel, it is famous for the 3 northern lagoons (Montecristo, Paso Balem and Rio de la Plata), which are typically abundant with Bonefish and Permit, and these lagoons seem to have a more resident population of game fish. Hope that helps!

Hi there,

I’m staying at the El Dorado Maroma, in Playa Maroma, near the marina from June 16th. Can I fish the shore line there away from the hotel? Is there any guided flats fishing nearby and can I get a four hour deep sea charter in this area?

    Hi Mick,

You should certainly be able to fish from the shore – there are some areas around resorts that are usually off grounds for surf fishermen, but just a bit further away is fair game. Just must make sure you’re at least 250m away from any swimmers.

The area around Tulum has some amazing fishing. Unfortunately, as far as charter recommendation goes, the closest deep sea options I know of are in Puerto Aventuras, about 20 minutes from your hotel. If that’s not too far for you, feel free to get in touch with our customer service team at [email protected], so they can suggest a few charters based on your preferences.

Hi,
I’m staying in Cancun from March 13. until the 27.
I plan on hiring a car and go to the Isla Blanca, trying to wade the flats from the shore sides flyfishing for different species (C&R).
I understand that the season is not quite right for bones and permit, but I will give it a go. Snook is probably in season, so hoping for some luck there.
Does this sound like a possible plan?
Any advice? Any dangers?
From what I’ve read on this site, I do not need a licence for this type of fishing, right?

Best regards,
Anders

    Hi Anders,

As far as your timing, it’s certainly not peak season, but you should still have a decent chance at bones, tarpon and permit (and yes, snook should be there as well). You don’t need a license for shore fishing, just make sure you’re not fishing inside of a protected area or a national park. I’m not too familiar with shore fishing in Isla Blanca myself, but they are pretty confident in the quality of their sand and grass flats. Try picking the brains of the local fishermen while in Cancun, Isla Blanca is just about 30 minutes north, so they should definitely have some inside knowledge. And tight lines!

    Hey Steve,

How many of you are planning to go fishing?

If there is up to 3 of you, you may want to consider Juancho , a panga boat with an experienced captain for inshore fishing.

As far as offshore trips go, since you’re staying in the northern part of Playa, I would probably recommend a charter out of Puerto Morelos instead. Galileo not only has a devoted crew, but the guys also own their own restaurant where they’ll cook your catch for free following the trip.

    Hope this helps!

    Hi Francesco,

We mainly communicate with Captains that run private charters exclusively, since shared trips are more difficult to organize and tend to undermine the quality of a fishing experience, since you need to compromise with other anglers as to the type of fishing you’re looking for. That said, a few budget-friendly options in Playa that we often recommend for single anglers or small groups are either Juancho or PDC Fishing and Snorkelling, both affordable panga boats, primarily focusing on inshore fishing.

    Hope that helps!

Hello, I’m from Belgium. I’m going to stay in the Ocean Maya Royal in the second half of June 2015. Is there something to catch from the beach there. I’ll bring a 14 feet surfcasting rod. Can you fish directly at the resort or are there great places in the direct neighbourhood. I ‘ll bring also a 9 ft rod. I’ve read the hotel offers fishtrips as well, anybody experience with them?. Anyone staying in the same period and that is thinking of doing a fishing trip, to shaer costs. Thx Ben

    Hi Ben,

You won’t be able to fish at your resort, since the law mandates you need to be at least 250 meters away from any beach used for swimming in order to fish from the shore. The rods you’re bringing along should be more than sufficient for some quality shore fishing action.

If you don’t mind taking a walk, there is a wooden fishing pier at the foot of 14 calle in Playa del Carmen. The place is not only good for fishing, but mingling with the local anglers as well. Other good places to try are the more unaccessible parts of the beaches north and south of the city.

Hotels take a commission on every trip they organize, so you will get charged extra. I’m afraid I’m not familiar with charters organizing shared fishing trips, but if you’re on a budget, consider asking Juancho or PDC Fishing and Snorkelling for a free quote. They’re both affordable options for a single angler, and are pretty flexible in customizing the trip to your own fishing preferences.

Hope you have a great time on your vacation!

    Hey Matt,

90% of the lagoon area actually fished can be waded (flats boots essential). Also, the coastline itself – all the way from Punta Norte to Macabi point – has some great shallow reefs and sandy flats that Permit and Bonefish frequent. You can reach those by foot as well, but you might still want to ask locals for a bit of help in guiding you to the hotspots ๐Ÿ™‚

    Happy bonefishing!

Hi,

My future wife and I will be staying at the excellence riviera cancun this upcoming july. We are looking to maybe do some flats fishing with light tackle gear. Trolling is not really our thing. Just curious if you can recommend a nearby charter that offers this type of fishing. Hi Nick,

Congrats on getting married! Cozumel is definitely one of Mexico’s most prolific fly fisheries, but Cancun holds its own pretty well. It’s not unheard of for anglers to claim their first Fly Grand Slam in the Cancun flats, with Bones, Permit, Tarpon and even an occasional Snook roaming the area. That said, I’m afraid I am scarce with contacts of charters specializing in fly fishing in Cancun, as it’s still mostly a trolling and bottom fishing-dominated town, as you can see from Cancun’s charter selection here. You can still inquire if any of these guys would be willing to squeeze in a fly fishing trip into their schedules, just keep in mind they are big game fishermen first.

Hi, I’m sorry if this is repetitive or has already been addressed, but I’m not a fishing person (and perhaps need the information filtered down for me).

My husband and I are going on our honeymoon at Playa del Carmen at the end of May/beginning of June. He’s goes deep sea fishing off the coast of San Diego a few times a year, and I thought it would be nice if I bought him a 1/2 or 1 day charter for him to enjoy on his own one of the days we’re there.

1. Is it best to book in advance or look around for charters/random people with boats?
2. What kinds of fish could he expect to catch at that time of year?

Thank you in advance.

    Hi Alicia,

Not a problem at all. Not sure if hubby intentionally timed your honeymoon with Playa’s peak fishing season or it was just a lucky coincidence, but he should have a great time on the water either way ๐Ÿ™‚ May and June are traditionally some of the best months to catch a pelagic in Playa; in particular both Blue and White Marlin, Sailfish, Dorados, Barracuda and a few more species will be in the area, so I wouldn’t recommend waiting to get there before booking a charter. If your husband will be going out by himself, any charter up to about 30ft should do him just fine – check out Juancho or Capt’ Ricks 31′ Bertram as a few affordable options in the area. Whether you should get him a 1/2 or a full day trip comes down to what species he’d like to target- if he’ll be happy with a Dorado or Wahoo, a half day should be enough. However, if he’s more of a Billfish kind of guy (meaning Marlin, Sailfish etc), anything less than a Full Day is likely not going to cut it. Hope this helps!

    David,

You’re going to be about 10 minutes away (by car) from Galileo, a 31′ Shamrocks operated by Captain Abraham in Puerto Morelos. Abraham specializes in big game fishing for a variety of species, but is always open to customizing your trip whichever way you’d like, including targeting billfish only. As far as the best location for billfishing, May is the peak season for Marlin and Sailfish in both Cancun and Playa, so you should be good to go either way!

Nice information here. I have a question. Staying at the El Dorado Royale the first week in March. Bringing the in-laws with us, and I’m planning on taking my father-in-law for a 6 hour trip. Scott,

From what we know, there are two ways you could go about sending the fish back to the states. You could ship it back, which may be a preferred option of the two, as it saves you from the potential hassles which tend to arise when transporting the fish yourself.

If you’re set on taking the fish home with you, here’s how a few people described the process:

You declare the fish with the US Customs, leaving the skin on so they can identify the fish if they decide to inspect it. The airlines are likely to require that the fish be put in a secure hard-sided cooler, but will probably take issue with filling the cooler with dry ice to keep the fish frozen. Also, it tends to count as an extra piece of luggage.

As for charter recommendation, I’d suggest inquiring with Captain Abraham and his 31′ Galileo in Puerto Morellos (about a 15-minute drive from the El Dorado Royale). Apart from being a Captain, Abraham is also a great cook with his own restaurant, where he prepares your daily catch after the trip for free! In the end, that’s probably your best option anyway ๐Ÿ™‚

Thanks for the info. I have brought back fish from the Cabo area in the past. The charter was able to help provide vacuum packing/freezing services. After this was done, we were able to pack the fish in a cooler on wheels with ice for the trip home. This worked perfectly. I was looking more for a business that could provide vacuum packing and freezing.

Hey guys! Great site! Big group heading back to riviera maya, near puerto Morelos in late June early July. Really want to go out fishing. We may have up to 10-12, mix of adults and kids, who would want to do a 4-6 hr trip. Any recommendations?

    Hi Cindy,

Two charters you might want to look into are Finatik and Big Fish. Both boats can take up to 12 people on board, although Big Fish is a bit more spacious, which might be worth taking into account when looking for the right charter, since having several hooks in the water while on a crowded boat with lots of kids, or reeling in an energetic snapper and bringing it on board is not the safest combo. Also, keep in mind that, due to federal regulations, you’re only allowed to have up to 6 lines in the water at the same time per boat, so if you’re planning a 4-hour trip not all may get to fish, or at least not for very long. A 6-hour trip should take care of that issue. Also, I’d recommend bottom fishing over trolling, as it tends to be more fun for the kids, and the chance of catching fish (albeit smaller) is greater. From what I know, both boats can incorporate snorkeling into their packages, but again, it all depends on how much time you have on your hands.

We are going to be heading to Rivera Maya in March and we were looking to fish for Sailfish or Marlin. If we were to catch one of these fish are we able to keep the fish? We wanted to know if we would be able to have it stuffed and shipped back to the US? If so what are the charters that do this? Thanks so much for the help.

    Hi Breann,

As far as we know, according to the regulations, every charter should be able to keep 1 marlin or 1 sailfish per group/trip. Regardless of what the law says, however, many charters enforce a strict catch-and-release policy on all Billfish as part of their conservation efforts (though some find it ironic, fishing Captains are often more interested in keeping our oceans bountiful and alive than most people). To that end, most of the captains we work with do promote releasing all billfish they catch, so I don’t really have one to refer you to. Your best bet would likely be asking for charter recommendations at your resort. Shipping the fish back to the US following your trip shouldn’t be a problem in itself.

    Hi Claude,

I’m assuming you’re asking about game fish in particular? One of the most sought-after game fish in Riviera Maya is also a terrific table fare – Dorado! Also known as Dolphin Fish or Mahi Mahi, it can be caught almost year round, although its peak season (in Playa del Carmen particularly) is during the spring and summer months. Many say it tastes better than almost any other seafood, and unlike most fish they’ve ever tried. There’s a variety of other game fish that make for a great meal, so it would help if you could be a bit more specific with your question.

On the other side of the spectrum, Billfish is considered too valuable a game fish to kill and eat, both in Mexico and around the world. To that end, many Captain practice a strict catch and release policy on all Billfish.

Thanks for replying. We will be staying at Oceans Coral and Turquesa. With the bigger size group we have we were thinking we would split up and use 2 boats. As far as what species of fish we go after all we care about is having the best chances of catching numbers instead of one big fish.

Hey again Steve. Just got off the phone with the Captain of Galileo – Amberjack, Snappers and Groupers are the likeliest catch when bottom fishing in mid-January. By all accounts, that’s going to be your best bet at catch quantity and making sure that the entire group has a good time. I’ll shoot you a couple of options for a larger group like yours in an email shortly.

Hello, I am interested in information regarding a fishing trip. Myself along with 10-12 other guys will be in Riviera Maya the week of January 19-23. We are interested in the best chances to catch numbers of fish, whether it’s smaller inshore fishing with spinning rods or offshore trolling. I understand you can’t control the weather and the fish, but we’ve been on a previous trip elsewhere and all we did was troll and didn’t even get a bite, which makes for an extremely boring boat ride. I look forward to hearing from you. Happy Holidays!!

    Hey Steve,

Where in Riviera Maya will you be staying? From what I gather, you guys would probably do great with some bottom fishing action instead of trolling this time around.

Not only does it produce more (albeit somewhat smaller) game fish, bottom fishing is also generally more exciting and engaging than trolling, as you’re interacting with the tackle much more often, and the bites are way more frequent (at least on average). Of course, it is all relative in fishing, and the Yucatan peninsula does provide some amazing offshore fishing as well, but if you want to increase your chances of actually catching fish and not just enjoying the scenery, bottom fishing would likely be the way to go. Besides, January isn’t really billfish season in Riviera Maya, so if you guys are looking for anything resembling a Marlin, you’re likely going to be out of luck either way. As I said, just let me know where you’ll be staying and I’ll recommend a few good options.

Steve, when it comes to shore fishing, the lagoon is home to plenty of smaller Barracudas and Jacks: when the bite is on, it’s a sight for sore eyes. I’ve even heard stories about small Bonefish cruising the area from time to time. There have been, however, gator/croc sightings by some shore anglers, and it can get pretty windy if you’re shore casting for a while, so just make sure you take all the necessary precautions.

As for charter fishing in January, it won’t be Billfish season for another few months (although Striped Marlin bites are recorded aplenty in January), but if you’re a fan of Wahoo, Tuna, Mackerel, Snapper etc, you could still be in for a treat. Depending on how much space you need on board, I’d recommend either Galileo or Comocean – they’re both boats from the same fleet, and the guys even throw in a free lunch at their restaurant after the trip. On the menu – your catch!

    Travis,

If you’re referring to the Secrets Silversands in Puerto Morellos, I’d look into Galileo for a deep sea trip out of Cancun. It’s got stellar reviews, and they cook your catch in their restaurant following the trip for free. Billfish is going to be in low season, but there’ll be plenty of Wahoo, Tuna, Barracuda and Kingfish to keep you busy. Tight lines!

    Hey Lisa,
There’s always a chance of booking a charter on the spot, though it’s not something I really recommend, as most quality charters get booked days/weeks in advance. My rule of thumb is to always book your fishing trip the same way you book your plane tickets – prior to leaving for vacation (hopefully ๐Ÿ™‚ ). You can check out the charter selection around Playa here. Most charters start their trips between 6:30 and 7:30 in the morning, so that would probably be the best time to try and find one on the spot.

    Hey Paul,

Just talked to the Captain of Playa del Carmen Fishing Snorkelling – he says people mostly use live bait rather than lures when fishing that spot, and that you should get ready for you line getting stuck between those rocks…more often than not ๐Ÿ™‚ He suggests possibly using lures for Barracuda.

If you’re not really a big fan of tangled lines, he recommends you try casting near the end of the pier instead, right around 12 – less rocks, better fishing!

    Hi Lisa,

You should head up north, but not necessarily to Playa – Puerto Aventuras has some great fishing that time of year, and is closer to Xelha (about a half hour drive). As for charter recommendation, if there’s going to be only three of you, I’d go with the Intimidator, a 35ft-er that can do either light tackle, bottom or big game fishing, depending on your preferences.

February is Wahoo and Tuna time in Riviera Maya – most billfish won’t be around for about a month more, although Sails (and lots of Mahis) will already be making their way to the Yucatan. Since you guys are there last week of February, be on the lookout for some early Marlin arrivals too! ๐Ÿ™‚

    Hi Dan,

By far the best place to go after Bonefish is gonna be the 3 lagoons north of Cozumel – Montecristo, Paso Balem and Rio de la Plata. They’re teeming with Bones, large Permit and Tarpon, and are likely the best spot in Mexico to try for a fly fishing Grand Slam. So I suggest getting on a ferry from Playa to Cozumel, and fishing the day away on the Cozumel flats. And don’t forget to come back here with pics!

    Patrick,

I just spoke to the Captain of Paraiso, one of our local charter operators in Playa – he suggests you take a taxi to “Cocobeach” in Playa del Carmen, about 20 minutes down south from your resort. Since you’re on a budget, the Captain does operate one of the most affordable vessels in the area – it’s a 25ft tiburonera boat, specializing in big game fishing, and offering super cheap Half Day private trips. You can check his full offer here.

According to the Captain himself, spin casting from the shore mid-October will give you a solid chance against Jacks, Barracudas and plenty of Snappers!

    Hi Jack,

The entire Riviera Maya is ripe with both small charter businesses as well as, like you said, giant charter fleets. Personally, I’ve had a great experience with both, but I can definitely recommend an experienced local guide that’s not just a part of a comprehensive charter offer. I’d just need to know where exactly in Riviera Maya you’re going to be staying?

    Hi Scott,

As far as billfish trips for 2 go, you can’t go wrong with Galileo– a 31ft vessel equipped with all the deep sea fishing gear you guys will need, a fighting chair and a bathroom on board, it’s also one of the cheapest charters in its size range. August is pretty much the last month for a decent Billfish action around Cancun, as most big game pelagics start migrating at the end of the month. At this time, they still troll for Marlin, Wahoo, Sailfish, Dorado and other usual suspects.

Fly fishing-wise, there are several guides whose services you may want to consider using. Still, if you don’t mind taking a shorter road trip, I would certainly recommend heading up a bit north to Isla Blanca, some 30 minutes away from the Cancun Hotel Zone. One of the most lauded fly fishing hotspots along the Quintana Roo, Isla Blanca is the go-to place for a Super Grand Slam, which requires a lucky angler to catch Tarpon, Permit, Bonefish and Snook, all in one day. Think you guys are up for the challenge? ๐Ÿ™‚

    Hi Jonathan,

Not a problem, we’re here to help ๐Ÿ™‚ How many of you will be going deep sea fishing? If it’s the standard group of between 4 and 6 anglers, I’d recommend looking into Don Quino or Comocean – both sturdy and sizable vessels, both of them giving you guys enough room for carefree casting. Sorry to disappoint, but September is usually considered the off-season as far as billfishing is concerned-August is pretty much the last train for Marlinville. That being said, how about going after some Tuna, Wahoo, Barracuda, Bonito or Mackerel? All still in full flight in September.

Cozumel definitely gets better PR as a Fly Fishing haven compared to Cancun, but the northern competitor knows how to pack a wallup too. Both are excellent areas for Permit (not a peak season for Permit in either location, but decent action nonetheless) Tarpon and Bonefish (somewhat more present cruising the northern Cozumel lagoons in September). If you’re looking for a prime fly fishing experience and don’t mind taking a short road trip with the guys, consider Isla Blanca and Ascension Bay as your possible end destinations too.

G’Day,

Heading to IBEROSTAR PARAISO LINDO Tue, 15 Jul 2014 for a family reunion. I have already packed a 9# flyrod and a bunch of mixed crazy charlies, clousers, crab, shrimp and squid patterns. Will I be able to do any flats casting within a walk of the resort?

Is the 9 weight appropriate or should I consider bringing something in the 5-7range?

The boys in the family are interested in doing a charter, though probably not flyfishing necessarily. Something where we could get into some light game dorado etc (where I might still sneak in a few fluff-chucks would probably be the go if that is possible. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

There would probably 5-7 of us interested in the charter.

I will look into the PDC Fishing Snorkling as well to indulge my fluff-chucking.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Kind Regards,

Paul

    Hi Paul,

Thanks for the comment. We’ve actually contacted the Captain of PDC Fishing Snorkelling regarding your questions, and he was more than happy to answer all of them ๐Ÿ™‚ Here we go:

You will in fact be able to fly cast withing a walking distance from the resort. According to the Captain, your 9-weight will be more than enough for some nice-sized barracudas currently cruising the area.

Mahi Mahis are peaking in Playa at the moment, so the boys are definitely in luck there. PDC Fishing Snorkelling can accommodate both their light tackle and your fly fishing preferences (they’ve got their own fly gear ready just in case as well). Their sturdy 29ft-er can take all of you guys for a spin.

Regarding the dates, the Captain is still open on the 15th, although other dates may be an option as well. Since there’s really no telling how long before the dates get booked, I suggest checking the Captain’s profile here and securing the fishing trip date as soon as possible.

If you have any more questions, let me know. Looking forward to your fluff-chucking report ๐Ÿ™‚

    Hi Denise,

First things first- when beach fishing in Playa del Carmen, he should make sure to be at least 250 meters away from any swimmers or beachgoers. Although it can get a bit windy for surf casting, and the fish rarely rival charter catches in both size and diversity, there are still plenty of Barracuda and Jacks near the shore to keep him busy.

There are, however, several low-cost charter options in Playa del Carmen if he really wants to make the most of his trip. Playa del Carmen Fishing Snorkelling offer 4-hour trips for up to 4 persons for as low as 250$. The vessel is equipped with all the necessary fly-fishing equipment, and the crew certainly harbors vast knowledge of the local waters. Either way, we’re counting on a hefty fishing report following his vacation ๐Ÿ™‚

Sorry to hear that your colleagues aren’t excited about fishing, but I’m sure we’ll be able to find you something! I can’t help much with shared charters as those are a nightmare to plan out due to frequent cancellations and low fishing quality. What I normally suggest to 1-2 angler teams is to charter a smaller boat like this one:

    https://fishingbooker.com/index.php/charters/view/627

It will only cost you 220 USD for a 1/2 day with all tackle, bait & beer/soft drinks included. Considering this has been your lifelong dream an important factor is that on private charters you get to choose where you’re fishing and which species you’re going to target.

If you want more details, call our customer service team: +1-888-341-4281 they plan trips similar to yours daily and will be glad to help you out with making yours an experience to remember!

Marlin in Jul/Aug: not the best time to get them to be honest, as Billfish are in peak there April – July. However, Tuna & Barracuda bite well in these months as well as Snapper / Grouper which can be targeted successfully year-round.

Trip sharing: you’ll have a hard time booking a shared charter in advance, so my advice (which works for our clients 90% of the time) is to book a smaller boat on your own and get 1 or 2 people from your group to split the price with you. You get to choose a boat according to your requirements. If you fail to find somebody to split the price with, you can cancel your trip free of charge if you use our service. Most operators have a 3 days in advance Free Cancellation policy.

    Thanks for asking.
The charter operators are pretty similar, if you like the simple solution I would recommend Captain Rick since he is docked 20 minutes away from Playa and has organized round trip from your hotel and back.

On the other hand, I would always go for Cozumel myself especial if you want Sailfish since Cozumel is world know for its Sailfish spots and who knows those places better than local Cozumel charters.
Be aware that charter operators from Cozumel will charge a pickup fee but I think its worth it ๐Ÿ™‚

Our Mexico specialist will send more details to you in an email.

I’m headed to Cozumel the second week in May. I’m going with a group of guys who are hard core fishers. Were looking for a recommendation for the best captain and best charter to book through for guys who take their fishing serious. Mostly looking to hook up with billfish, Dolphin, and Tuna.

Thanks,

Matt

    Hi Matt,

May is actually prime Marlin / Sailfish and Dolphin season, but not so good for Tuna.

How many days of fishing do you plan on doing and how many people? The best charters in your area normally depart from Cozumel (La Casa del Marlin) or Puerto Aventuras (Captain Rick’s). They have the best prices and a wide array of vessels depending on your requirements, since the sportfishing industry is very competitive. Most of the captains are Mexicans and the good ones are part of bigger operators that specialize just in fishing (not sightseeing / cruising etc).

    From Cozumel:
La Casa del Marlin has 3 boats, 28-40ft depending on group size and budget. Full day trips are $475-$800.

From Puerto Aventuras (yes, they can pick you up in Cozumel):
Captain Rick’s has over 14 boats in their fleet, ranging 23-48ft in size. Full day trips $525-$1050.

Can you tell me any more about Casa Del Marlin, why you recommend them over Albatros, are they better than Ricks.

The group I’m fishing with is experienced fishing around the world. We are looking for a Tournament quality captain with the same in gear and a boat.

Hi Matt. I’m not recommending Casa Del Marlin over Albatros or Rick’s, as I’ve personally never fished with any of them. However, we (FishingBooker) we have booked lots of trips with all three, and our customers so far have been happy.

The problem with Cancun, Cozumel and Playa is that they’re very popular tourist destinations with a hugely competitive charter fishing market, so it’s very hard to find ‘living legend’ quality captains down there that are brands on their own. What I’ve given you are the largest charter services there which also care about their service quality.

If you want a world class experience spinning / fly fishing, you might want to Google “Carlos Vega”, a famous fisherman from Cozumel that’s been fishing it’s waters since the sixties. He specializes mostly in light tackle and fly fishing though, but has a boutique operation in Cancun called “Aquarius Charters”.

Sorry but no exact answer here if you’re looking for big game species.

I always wanted to go fish for a Marlin or Sailfish. What are the chances for catching one in July in Cozumel? Will two day trip increase my chances and how much?

    Hey Steven,

You couldn’t pick a better time for billfishing in Cozumel if you wanted to: the peak season for Marlin and Sailfish is March to July! As far as booking a charter for two days, it would certainly increase your chances, although it’s far from impossible to catch a Marlin in a single day around here. The population count is pretty impressive.

Thanks for an advice, it sure sounds promising. Could you suggest a suitable charter? There will be just 3 of us, and we all are new to a deep sea fishing.

    Thanks

I am headed to Cancun in the middle of February and will most likely have to do a shared trip. Not happy about that, but the budget is tight. Do you know what they will be catching and any charter recommendations?

    Hi Shawn,

Unfortunately, I don’t really know of many charters running shared fishing trips in Cancun, since most captains that we communicate with almost exclusively offer private charters. I think your best bet would be asking for captain and boat suggestions at your resort or trying your luck at the marina, although shared trips do tend to be pretty difficult to organize on a short notice. As far as fishing, February marks the early start of deep sea season in Cancun with Mackerel, Tuna, Wahoo and Barracuda already productive, while Billfish and Dorado are slowly beginning to migrate to the area. Let me know if you happen to land one ๐Ÿ™‚

Is shark fishing allowed in Mexico? I tried researching online, but it seems there have been lots of alterations to the rules regarding shark fishing lately and I couldn’t find any conclusive results…

Thanks

    Hi Richard,

Sharks tend to reproduce slower than most species, making them much more susceptible to overfishing. This combined with the fact that their population is dwindling worldwide led to Mexico imposing a moratorium on shark fishing in the recent years. The ban primarily focuses on great whites, but all sharks and rays are released. Still, plenty of species left to choose from ๐Ÿ™‚

Hi Ray,

Thanks for your comment. Probably not good to start with big game as they might get hesitant to swim when they see what’s coming out of the water ๐Ÿ™‚

Our advice – take them shore fishing from the beach a few times before chartering a boat. You can probably get small snapper from the beach which should get them interested and accustomed to rods, reels, fish etc. If they’re still keen on fishing after a few sessions at the beach, then you can think about chartering a boat. Just make sure it has an enclosed air-conditioned cabin and toilet. Small children and panga boats don’t play well!

When you’re ready to charter a boat check out the link below:

Thanks for the info. Yeap, I haven’t thought it might be frightening for them. I’ll do shore fishing first. One last thing ๐Ÿ™‚ How much in advance should I book the trip? I see that all of your charters have a free cancellation, is there any conditions except the date?

    Thanks

I am planning to get my two boys (9 and 12) excited in fishing and our holiday in Playa is the best time. Could you advise on what type of fishing would be the best for this?
I would like to try trolling for a big game but not that sure it would suit the boys.
Cheers.

Hey! ๐Ÿ™‚ Sounds like you’re planning a great trip. Here is a very popular charter close to your resort that we would highly recommend: https://fishingbooker.com/charters/view/350. They offer anything from half day to full day trips and can arrange trolling or bottom fishing, depending on what you would rather do.

The beaches around your resort should have some nice shore fishing spots: the best thing to do is just ask the staff when you get there for some excellent local advice.

I will be in Cancun at the Moon Palace in October. I am an avid angler and would love to catch a few of the salty beasts in the area. Any suggestions?
