Don’t walk – run! The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) just dropped a huge announcement… The recreational for-hire season for Red Snapper in the Gulf is reopening. The newly extended season will run from December 11, 2025, to January 1, 2026.

In their latest press release, NOAA Fisheries shared the fantastic news that anglers will have an additional 20-day Red Snapper fishing window! So, if you missed your chance to battle these prized specimens in federal waters, now’s the time to make it right and book your Red Snapper fishing trip.
Why did NOAA reopen the federal Red Snapper season in the Gulf?
After reviewing landing data, NOAA Fisheries determined that the quota hadn’t been met. In other words, the Red Snapper catch rate in federal waters is still below the limit, meaning there’s room to reopen the season until the target is reached.
What else do I need to know?
Firstly, it’s important to note that the reopening of the federal season doesn’t affect the season in state waters, and they remain unchanged. For a full list of the Gulf states and their Red Snapper season dates, check out our guide to Red Snapper seasons.
Secondly, if you’re ready to take advantage of this extended season but you’re not sure where to go, we recommend checking out the best Red Snapper hotspots. Try your luck at landing a trophy fish in some of the most productive fisheries in the country!
Lastly, don’t forget to double-check the state’s rules and regulations where you plan to fish. In some states, like Texas, you’ll need to buy a fishing license before hopping aboard a boat. In other states, such as Florida, a charter operator will cover your saltwater fishing license.
Tight lines – and enjoy the extended season!
