These fish represented fertility to the ancient Egyptians and their image has been preserved for millennia in hieroglyphs on the walls. It’s said that the species also appears in the Gospel of St. Matthew, when the apostle Peter is told to catch a fish so that he may take a coin from its mouth and use it to pay the temple tax.
