But let’s break this down further.

What’s the problem with the Atlantic Red Snapper season?

The Red Snapper season is the most anticipated event of the year. Each year, anglers flock to Florida to try their luck at landing these enviable specimens in federal waters. But unlike the Gulf’s season, the Atlantic Red Snapper fishing window is extremely short – this year, it was only two days.

And if you think that’s disappointing, the 2024 season in the Atlantic ran for a single day! So, the ridiculously short season that’s been happening for years now motivated the FWC to reexamine the situation and push for a change.

What changes would the new management plan bring?

The EFP advocates for a longer season. Instead of the one or two days we’ve been having so far, the new management plan proposes 39 days of fishing for Red Snapper in the Atlantic. But the extended season doesn’t only unlock more opportunities for anglers, it also opens the door to major economic growth in the region.

Photo courtesy of Old Town Charters

In his announcement on November 10, 2025, Governor Ron DeSantis said, “Florida’s management of Atlantic Red Snapper fishing will boost local economies along our Atlantic coast, supporting tackle and bait shops, hotels, restaurants, and the entire recreational fishing community.”

DeSantis pointed out that the Gulf had benefited from the state-led management, and he expressed certainty that the same would happen for the Atlantic fishery, especially given the fact that Florida had been doing a great job in curbing overfishing and maintaining a healthy Red Snapper population.

What does state-led management entail?

Empowering the state to assume management of its own natural resources means enabling it to be at the helm of all decisions related to those resources.

In other words, state-led management would allow Florida to be in charge of monitoring fish species, researching and reporting, making informed decisions based on the collected data, and continuously and independently revising rules and regulations.

What would the new Atlantic Red Snapper season be?

If the FWC proposal is approved, these could be our new 2026 dates for Red Snapper fishing off the Atlantic Coast:

Summer season: May 22 – June 20

Fall season: October 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11, 16, 17, and 18.

What the actual outcome will be remains to be seen.
