So to make it simple to understand the fishing seasons in BC, we’ll talk about it in terms of saltwater and freshwater action.

On the saltwater front, the best season to fish is between May and November, as the waters surrounding Vancouver Island will be teeming with Salmon. Likewise, this same time frame offers the best Halibut fishing. Finally, you’ll even get to do some crabbing, provided you visit in late summer.

Meanwhile, if you’re looking for freshwater Salmon, your best bet is to time your trip around their annual runs. These happen at different times depending on the type of Salmon, but the brunt of the action takes place from late summer through fall.

When it comes to Trout, they’ll bite best during spring and fall. Steelhead angling is exceptionally good in BC, with the fish biting from July all the way through winter. Similarly, the big Fraser River Sturgeon can be caught almost the entire year, although the milder temperatures between April and November make for the best time to head out and wrestle them.

British Columbia Fishing Regulations

Whether you’re fishing solo or with a charter, the most important thing to keep in mind is a fishing licence.
