A visit to this island, however, couldn’t be further away from the typical resort town experience! From deep sea waters to shallow lagoons, fishing in Cozumel is so diverse that it reels in anglers from Riviera Maya’s mainland and beyond.
<wistia-player media-id="nupi4rriqt" aspect="1.7777777777777777">

The island of Cozumel is one the best fishing locations in Mexico – and there’s a good reason for that. Surrounded by a variety of impressively diverse waterways, it offers incredible opportunities to cast over the reefs, in deep offshore waters, or in the stocked inshore flats and lagoons. Excellent fishing isn’t the only thing that makes Cozumel the perfect destination for your next trip, either. It’s smaller and quieter than tourist hot spots like Playa Del Carmen, but without compromising on stunning beaches and excellent food.

That makes Cozumel a great choice for families or anyone looking for a more laid-back vibe.

In this video, we’re sharing what you need to know before you go fishing in Cozumel. We’ll go into details about the types of fish you can catch, fishing seasons, and include a few pointers with regards to fishing regulations. By the time you’re finished watching, you’ll be booking a trip and packing your bags.

But, before we get started, make sure you’re hitting the like and subscribe buttons to stay up to date on all the latest fishing videos. We couldn’t kick

off a video about fishing in Mexico without talking about deep sea fishing. In Cozumel, it’s some of the best. Thanks to the underwater canyon that’s formed between the island and the mainland, the waters here get seriously deep very quickly.

With deep waters come world-famous fish and you’ll reach those within minutes of the dock. Topping the fish list are big Billfish. One of the biggest draws for deep sea anglers fishing in Cozumel is the realistic possibility of landing a Billfish Grand Slam. You can achieve one yourself by reeling in any combination of 3 of the following species: Blue Marlin, White Marlin, Sailfish, and Swordfish.

You don’t have to be an expert, either. Because deep sea fishing grounds can be found so close to shore, you’ll be trolling for these beasts in no time. Billfish are technically found in Cozumel’s waters year-round but if you’re after the Grand Slam the best time to visit is between March and August. If you’re fishing during this time, you can also expect to find Mahi Mahi and Wahoo.

They’re the perfect addition to a Billfish-focused trip and provide some unforgettable action – not to mention the fact that they make for excellent table fare at a beachside barbeque.

Underwater canyons aren’t the only thing that makes Cozumel’s geography so unique. Its coastline is also a part of the Mesoamerican Reef, which is the second-largest reef system in the world after Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. It’s a big part of why the island is considered one of the best diving and snorkeling spots in the world.

And then there’s the fishing. Over 500 different fish species call the reef home and standouts include huge Cubera Snapper. These fish get so big that locals recommend getting yourself some heavy-braided line. We’re talking Marlin grade!

If you’re not ready for a workout that intense, there’s also plenty of smaller Mangrove, Yellowtail, and Mutton varieties to target. Where there’s Snapper, there’s often Grouper as well, and this holds true for Cozumel. You’ll find many varieties of both species while bottom fishing here. Just be on the lookout for spear fishers while searching for these fish though.

This is also a popular technique along the reefs and a great way for experienced anglers to get in the water and target these tasty species. Cozumel’s

famous lagoons almost outshine the action in its deep waters. You’ll find Rio de Plata, Montecristo, and Paso Balem lagoons at the north end of the island, and all three promise one thing – excellent Bonefishing. These fast fish are known around the world as “The Ghosts of the Flats” and their speed is the number one reason they’re a top catch from any inshore angler.

Bonefish are so plentiful in Cozumel that you can catch them year-round. Peak months, however, are between March and May and during the late fall – especially in October. By far the best way to target these fish is on the fly. You can try out this technique by hopping on a boat specially equipped for fishing in shallow waters or even by wading in the lagoons.

Just remember to stay extra quiet and stick to cloudy and grassy areas. Bonefish are super stealthy and rarely come out into the open. Landing one of these fish is a serious battle of skills so arm yourself with patience and a knowledgeable guide. If you want to take your flats fishing experience one step further you can also add Tarpon, Permit, and Snook to your target list.

You're almost ready to start fishing in Cozumel, but first, let's cover a few important rules and regulations before you step out on the water.

The most important one is making sure you’re avoiding the National Marine Reserve Park, also known as the “protected park zone.” It runs along the south coast and southern tip of the island and no fishing is allowed here in an effort to preserve the coral reefs found along this stretch. Other than that, fishing spots on the island are yours for the taking!

The best way to take advantage of your time on the water is to hire a local captain. There are a few reasons for that, including the fact that your license will usually be included within the cost of the charter, as well as all the gear you need to land the fish of your dreams. If you’re fishing on your own, remember to purchase a license online before heading out. Lasty,

you’ll need to keep an eye on your catch intake.

In Mexico, you can keep 10 fish per day. Within that quota, there can be no more than five of the same species, and keep in mind that you can only keep one fish from the Billfish family per day. That said, a Billfish will also count for half of your daily limit. Likewise, you can keep two Mahi Mahi or one Tarpon per day and this will also account for half of your daily limit.

So, if you’re ready to swap tequila for tranquility and go fishing in one of the world’s most spectacular spots – it’s time to start packing your bags. And that’s why we’re here!

You can find a Cozumel fishing trip that's perfect for you and your family by downloading the FishingBooker app from the Google Play or App Store, or by visiting FishingBooker.com. With hundreds of local guides, verified reviews, and hassle-free online bookings, you’ll save time and money, and experience an exciting day on the water.

So go ahead and download our app or visit us online and start planning your adventure today!

</wistia-player>
Something else that makes casting a line in Cozumel so exciting is how little time it takes. We’re not talking about time spent on the water, of course. We wouldn’t blame you for wanting to spend day after day cruising the Caribbean, rod in hand. Nope, we mean travel time.

Thanks to the natural underwater canyon that’s been formed between Cozumel and the mainland, you’ll be able to reach waters over 2 meters deep just minutes after departing this island’s shoreline. And with deep waters comes world-famous big game fish!

It’s not just about deep sea fishing in Cozumel, though. You’ll also be able to plumb the depths of the Mesoamerican Reef (also known as the Great Mayan Reef), where a bounty of tasty bottom-dwelling species lurk.

Mesoamerican Reef

Then there’s the flats fishing action on offer. Known around the world as the “Ghost of the Flats,” thanks to its sneaky, slippery nature, it’s really earned a name for itself as a top catch for anglers fishing in Cozumel.

Why? Well, its feisty nature means that hooking it is something of an art form. Also, it thrives in extremely shallow waters – and what can you find in the northern part of Cozumel? Three huge lagoons. They’re the perfect Bonefish habitat!

In fact, Bonefish love Cozumel’s shallow flats so much that you can find this species here year-round. This means that, when it comes to exploring what these waters have to offer, hopping aboard a local fishing charter is the most time-efficient and productive option.

Not only will you be armed with top-quality fishing gear, bait, and lures, but you’ll also have your captain’s expert knowledge at your disposal. Looking to hook one of those Grand Slams, or target a specific fish? Your captain will make sure you cast your line in the best spots, and will share tips and tricks too.

Depending on the type of fishing you’d like to do, your charter adventure might look slightly different. In fact, some captains even run spearfishing trips alongside their conventional fishing trips, providing all the necessary gear. Although anyone can technically spearfish, it’s important to note that you will be “free diving.” You have to be in relatively good shape and a confident swimmer.

If you tick those boxes, though, there’s nothing quite like “hunting underwater,” as Cozumel locals like to call it. Captains are used to introducing novices to this sport, too, so why not add it on to your angling bucket list?

Can I Surf Fish in Cozumel?

Although it might seem like Cozumel’s quieter beaches and shallow lagoons are built for on-foot fishing, most locals recommend avoiding this option. The lagoons in the northern end of the island may be shallow, but wading your way through the marshy mangroves to the best Bonefish spots can be exceptionally tricky, and even dangerous.

Similarly, although it’s possible to cast a line from the beach shores, you have to make sure you’re at least 250 meters away from swimmers. You also won’t be able to reach any supersized fish this way. In general, a boat will get you to the hottest spots more quickly. The only area to really avoid is around the National Marine Reserve Park, also known locally as “the protected park zone.” Apart from this, the world (or island) is your oyster! Here are some places to get you started:

Montecristo, Paso Balem and Rio de la Plata Lagoons: Ah, Cozumel’s famous lagoons. These waters are surrounded by wild scenery and mangrove forests, and are home to Bonefish, Tarpon, Permit, and more. If it’s flats fishing you’re after, there really is no better place to cast a line.

San Miguel de Cozumel: The main “city” on the island, so it’s worth paying a visit just to get a taste of local life! It’s also located right along Cozumel’s northwest shoreline, so you’ll find plenty of deep sea charters departing from this location.

Playa Caletitas: Listen carefully to local spearfishing enthusiasts, and you’ll probably hear this name crop up a few times. It’s Cozumel’s unofficial spearfishing hotspot, thanks to the plethora of corals and underwater structures hidden close to its shoreline.

When to Go Fishing in Cozumel

Cozumel boasts excellent angling opportunities year-round. These waters are brimming with fish species throughout the entire year. So, don’t worry about returning empty-handed from your Cozumel fishing trip.

Now, if you are interested in boosting your odds of landing bigger specimens or reeling in a trophy fish, then you should align your angling adventure with the high season of your target. For example, you can pursue inshore and offshore species, such as Bonefish and Billfish, at any time of the year, but some months are more productive than others. Bonefish fishing is the best in spring and then again in fall, whereas the peak season for Billfish fishing is between March and August.

Cozumel Fishing Regulations

The local rules and regulations, of course! As is the case throughout Riviera Maya, you’ll need a valid fishing license to explore Cozumel’s waters. Luckily, if you’re fishing alongside a local charter captain, they’ll usually include your license for you within the cost. The same goes for spearfishing, too.

If you’re fishing in Cozumel alone, you’ll need to purchase a license, which can be done online. It’s a simple process, and usually costs around US$9 for a one-day license.

Although catch and release is becoming more and more popular here, chances are you’ll probably want to keep some of your fish. This is possible, but each angler is limited to 10 fish per day. However, not all fish were created equal. Here’s a quick breakdown of the rules as they currently stand:

An individual angler can bag no more than five specimens of a single species (e.g. Grouper, Snapper).

An angler can keep only one sample of Marlin, Sailfish, or Swordfish per day. Each fish counts as half of your daily bag limit.

An angler can keep two Mahi Mahi or Tarpon on a single day, amounting to half of their daily bag limit.

Cozumel: Discover the Serene Side of Riviera Maya

If you’re ready to swap tequila for tranquility (and plenty of trolling, of course), then the island of Cozumel is calling your name.
