Well, not only are they seriously hard-fighting and flavorful, they also inhabit Mobile Bay during all stages of their lives. This means you’ll have the chance to encounter anything from juvenile “rat” Reds, to “slot” Reds, to mighty (in size and stature!) Bull Reds.

If you want to battle your Reds like the locals do, grab your lightest tackle and live shrimp, live croakers, or gold and silver spoons. This is a tried-and-true Alabaman way of hooking into Redfish, and you’ll be able to try out this technique whenever you visit. Although Reds inhabit the waters near Dauphin Island year-round, bear in mind that during the colder months, they’ll be heading for deeper fishing grounds.
<div class='featured-charters-container' data-trigger='featured-charters' data-destination-id='247' data-destination-title='Dauphin Island' data-perpage='4' data-currency='USD'data-filter-field='fishFilter'data-filter-value='redfish'data-headline='Top Redfish Fishing Charters in Dauphin Island'data-add-type='m'>

Speckled Trout

From one inshore favorite to another, next on our list comes delicious Speckled Trout. In turn, this leads to a Redfish bonanza!

Interstate 10 Bridge: Okay, let us clarify…we don’t mean the whole bridge! To be more specific, head to the channels flowing south from the bridge at the head of Mobile Bay. This is where you’ll find those trophy-sized Bull Reds.

Cedar Point Fishing Pier: Located on the island itself, this pier is the perfect place to test your on-foot fishing skills. You’ll be able to hook Redfish, Black Drum, Speckled Trout, and Flounder, among others. The entrance fee is a reasonable $5, and because it’s privately owned, you don’t need to purchase a license.

The Rubble Reefs: Located just 6 miles east of Dauphin Island, this collection of artificial underwater structure was created when a hurricane destroyed the previous bridge leading to Dauphin Island. You’ll find plenty of tasty bottom-dwelling species here, including Red Snapper, proving that new life can come from tragedy.

The Pyramids: These prefabricated structures lie around 30 miles from Dauphin Island, out in the Gulf. Designed to keep the area’s fishery healthy, they definitely contribute to its “bucket list” reputation! Some of them are around 25-feet-tall and are the perfect structure for bullish Amberjack.

When to Go Fishing in Dauphin Island

Dauphin Island is a year-round fishing destination. However, some seasons do fare better than others depending on what you want to catch.

In terms of inshore fishing, spring and fall are usually the most productive. It’s when all the local favorites, such as Redfish, Speckled Trout, Black Drum, and Flounder will be biting with fervor.

On the other hand, if you want to do some reef fishing or head offshore, we’d recommend visiting Dauphin Island in summer. It’s when the Red Snapper season opens, and you’ll get to catch a bunch of other fish including pelagics such as King Mackerel, Mahi Mahi, and more.

There’s good fishing in the winter, too, though most of the action is concentrated inshore and along the nearshore structure.

Dauphin Island Fishing Regulations

The legalities of fishing here, of course. But before you grab your rod and reel, you're going to need an Alabama fishing license.

This video will address some of your common questions about getting a fishing license in Alabama so that you spend less time looking for answers and more time fishing. If you want to watch more videos like this, be sure to like and subscribe below.

Who needs an Alabama fishing license? Long story short, everyone between the ages of sixteen and sixty five needs to be in possession of one while fishing in Alabama. This applies to both residents and non residents.

There are some exceptions, though. For starters, anyone under the age of sixteen, resident or non resident, doesn't need a fishing license. If you're a state resident who is over the age of sixty five, you also don't need one.

If you're a state resident fishing from a local bank in your home county, you also don't need to purchase a license. All you need is proof of residency. In addition, Alabama residents visiting home on military leave are exempt from having to buy Non resident college students going to school in Alabama between the ages of seventeen and twenty three are also exempt. They can obtain a residency exception from their local probate office, license commissioner, marine resource office, or any authorized outdoor recreation office.

Last but not least, you don't need to buy a license if you're fishing on an Alabama saltwater charter. However, if you're fishing with a freshwater guide, you'll still need to purchase your own fishing license.

If you're looking for a charter and want to avoid the hassle of getting a license, be sure to click on the link below in order to book an Alabama saltwater charter. If you're planning to fish on your own, then be sure to keep watching.

Okay, so you know you need a license, but which one do you need to get? This depends on a few factors, mainly whether you're an Alabama resident or not, whether you'll be fishing in freshwater or saltwater, and how long you plan on fishing. If you're an Alabama resident, you can purchase your fishing license at a lower rate than a nonresident. The price will also vary depending on how long the license is valid for, as well as on where you plan to go fishing.

The two most basic licenses you can buy are freshwater and saltwater. Keep in mind, there isn't an individual license for fishing in brackish water, so if you plan on fishing somewhere where it's possible to hook both freshwater and saltwater fish, you should consider purchasing both types of licenses just to be safe.

In addition, there are also the following annual licenses available: Wildlife Heritage licenses, Wirebasket licenses, Spearfishing licenses, and Freshwater Commercial Fishing licenses.

For more details about annual licenses as well as full price breakdowns for each licensing category, be sure to check out our full blog article by clicking on the link in the description below. There are also some instances where you can receive a free or reduced fee license.

As mentioned earlier, Alabama residents visiting home on military leave are exempt from having to pay for a license. Military veterans, however, can buy their licenses at a discount. Residents and nonresidents who are either partially or totally disabled are also able to buy them at a discounted price.

If you're a non resident member of the military stationed in Alabama, you too can get a discount on your fishing license. Just visit your local probate office, license commissioner, marine resource office, or any authorized outdoor recreation office and bring a copy of your orders of assignment to You'll get your military residency exception from one of these locations and you'll be ready to start fishing in no time.

The only species that requires a tag for game fishing in Alabama is Tarpon. This applies to any possession or extraction of the species.

There are also size and bag limits in place for other types of fish, so be sure to check out our full blog article or visit the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources website to get more information. And remember, these requirements can change from year to year, so it's important to always stay up to date on local rules and regulations before you head out.

Getting a fishing license in Alabama is pretty easy. You can either purchase one online or in person.

If you plan on buying one in person, you can visit your county's Probate Office, the Licensed Commissioner's Office, or any State Park locations. You can also go to a certified retailer such as Walmart, Dick's Sporting Goods, Academy Sports, Ace Hardware, or any state registered bait and tackle store. You can also just buy one from the comfort of your own home by visiting the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources website or just simply outdoor alabama dot com. Make sure you have a valid form of ID, either a driver's license or a passport, and your social security number.

If you're eligible for a military discount, be sure to have your assignment paperwork with you as well.

If you lose your fishing license, there's no need to worry. It's really easy to get it replaced. You can order a replacement online or at your local probate office or license state commissioner's office.

Just remember, you have to get it replaced in order to continue to fish legally.

And that's it!
