Ports and inlets south of Biscayne Bay offer some of the best tarpon fishing in the area.\r\n\r\nSpecifically, Government Cut between Miami Beach and Fisher Island is a great location to get you started.\r\n\r\nThere are plenty of great locations just north of Miami as well. Port Everglades in particular is a local hotspot that produces plenty of action from mid to late spring. So yeah, our trips are really unique because it enables us to go out in the late evening. Usually, the sun&#039;s a little lower. It&#039;s a lot cooler.\r\n\r\nIt gives you an opportunity to avoid some of the crowds, then the fishing pressure enables you to be able to catch more fish. Likewise, you&#039;re gonna be less hot, you&#039;re gonna be more relaxed, and in a more enjoyable time. So this presents a really special opportunity to present either flies, artificial, or live bait to these tarpon for our best chances on catching them. And we usually catch in the range of twenty pound fish to even up to a hundred pound.\r\n\r\nIt&#039;s really exciting, and it gives you a great opportunity to maybe catch a once in a lifetime fish on fly or on spin tackle.\r\n\r\nThe best part is you have a wide window to plan your trip. Tarpon are most active in Southern Florida&#039;s waters from January through June, their peak being in February. However, further up the coast, they typically start to show up in larger numbers around late spring. So absolutely, hands down, tarpon is number one.\r\n\r\nThe peak season lasts from March to July, and most fish are found during the receding tide. The really big migratory fish start to show up in April and stay until June. However, Tarpon of all ages and sizes can be found throughout mangrove rich creeks and rivers during the whole year.\r\n\r\nThis takes us further north along the West Coast of Florida to the town of Boca Grande, also known as the Tarpon Capital of the World. Each year, thousands of hungry Tarpon migrate to Boca Grande and its surrounding waters to spawn.\r\n\r\nThey start to show up in early April, but the best fishing is done May through June, especially along the Boca Grande and Gasparilla passes.\r\n\r\nTarpon fishing is ingrained in the fabric of this seaside paradise. In fact, the very first records of hooking tarpon in the area date back to the late seventeen hundreds and the first British settlers. Since then, it&#039;s worked its way up to the number one place in the world for Tarpon fishing. It&#039;s located on Gasparilla Island, an area where big migratory fish pass by, so it can be said that this is what Boca Grande owes its reputation to. These beasts can reach up to one hundred and fifty pounds, with some catches even reported at three hundred pounds. Because of the number and sizes of these fish, it&#039;s no wonder why Boca Grande has become synonymous with Tarpon Fishing.\r\n\r\nAnd finally, we&#039;ve saved you our favorite for last, the Florida Keys. Hook a large shrimp under its horn on the head or thread it and freeline it. Avoid using floats because they make it difficult for the shrimp to swim naturally. Use a lighter line and cast close enough to sighted fish for them to see your lure. Spinning lures and plugs should be retrieved slowly, letting the lure sink, then intermittently pulling the rod tip and reeling in the slack.<\/p><p>The lures that have proven to be effective include Gator spoons (3 ounces), Mirrolure 65M or 77M in colors 18 or 21, Rapala Magnum (in natural colors, for trolling), as well as red, black, or green plastic worms (Texas Rigged), worked close to the bottom.<\/p><p>When fishing canals and rivers are connected to saltwater, use small Rapalas, Rebels, and round-headed Crappie Jigs about 1\/8 ounces. Especially if you&#8217;re just starting out, but no need to worry. Finding the right techniques and times to go can make a big difference in landing your next trophy catch. Speaking from my personal experience fishing the south west Florida waters, I plan my Tarpon trips around strong outgoing or incoming tides. Bonus points if it&#8217;s around a newer or fuller moon, and if the factors all line up, I also plan to fish around dawn or dusk feeding frenzies.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The best spots for Tarpon fishing that I&#8217;ve seen are those around mangrove lines, drop-offs, flowing currents, backwaters, and nearshore points. Even off the beaches we get bait at, I&#8217;ve seen them roll and get hooked up to. My favorite technique is casting a live mullet out into a current or drop-off zone and letting the bait swim around and entice them. The sudden thump on my line gets my heart racing! That, and when a big Tarpon strikes on my topwater lure as the sunset hits the water just right.
