It doesn’t receive the same hype that the Bahamas or the Cayman Islands do, but we’re here to change that. Not only will an Aruba fishing trip have you going after massive Billfish surprisingly close to shore, but the inshore action will pique the interest of any fly angler too.
<wistia-player media-id="jbp7mggze5" aspect="1.7777777777777777">

Aruba is one of the best kept secrets in fishing. Even though it doesn't get the same hype as island destinations like the Bahamas or the Caymans, today, we're going to show you exactly why it should.

Not only will fishing in Aruba see you targeting billfish surprisingly close to shore, but the inshore action is good enough to spark the interests of even the most seasoned fly anglers. What's more, Aruba is the definition of an island paradise. Blink and you'll miss it. This tiny country situated in the South Caribbean Sea measures just twenty miles long and six miles wide. But don't worry, what it lacks for in size it makes up for with the big impression it leaves both on and off the water.

On land, you'll find sandy beaches, luxury hotels, and sea views everywhere you look. And once you get on the water, the action is never ending.

In this video, we're covering everything you need to know before you go fishing in Aruba, including seasonality, bucket list fish, and some important rules and regulations to keep in mind so you can make the most out of your trip.

Aruba's diverse waters are what makes fishing here so unforgettable. You can catch all kinds of species, but there are two main groups of anglers who come here looking to fulfill their fishing dreams.

The first comes searching for billfish. Blue Marlin, White Marlin, and Sailfish are Aruba's biggest draw, and you'll find these species roaming the waters surrounding the island year round. The northeastern side of the island is the ideal Marlin habitat. Depths plummet to one thousand feet just three miles from shore, meaning you won't have to travel far before your adventure gets started. Aruba's record breaking Blue Marlin weighed in at over one thousand pounds, and your best bet for hooking a grander of your own is visiting in the fall.

If you're after a Caribbean Grand Slam, you'll also want to explore the south side of the island, which Sailfish call home. Prime breeding grounds are anywhere between five and fifteen miles from shore. This is where Aruba's small size is an advantage, so you can easily explore both Marlin and Sailfish fishing grounds in a single day. Just remember, catch and release is mandatory for all Billfish in Aruba.

While you're pursuing these legends, you'll also come across Mahi Mahi and Wahoo. These creatures prefer tropical waters, making Aruba the perfect place to cast a line. You won't have to go too far from shore before you set your sights on them either. Wahoo tend to congregate on the reefs, and you'll find some further out in Bluewater as well.

As for Mahi Mahi, you'll primarily find them on the west side of the island. Best of all, local restaurants will happily prepare your catch for you once you're back on shore. And it doesn't end there. You can also target sharks and tuna in deeper waters or bottom fish for Yellowtail Snapper, Triggerfish, and more over the reefs.

If staying closer to shore is more your speed, don't worry, there's plenty of action to be had in Aruba's shallower waters too.

Anglers keen on testing their fly fishing skills will find the inshore waters both challenging and fulfilling. Topping the target list here are Bonefish. These lightning fast fish can reach speeds of up to forty miles per hour as they race through the flats. If you're after these fast fish or you're looking to fly fish in general, head to the island between March and October. It's less windy at this time of year, which will make it easier to cast. Make sure you come with enough line and experience, and your day can be very fulfilling.

You'll also wanna bring your favorite gear with you. Unless you're fishing with a guide, you'll be hard pressed to find fly tackle on this tiny island. If the bonefish are eluding you, don't worry. There's plenty of inshore fishing action in Aruba to take part in. In fact, you'll also come across Barracuda measuring up to three feet long. These fish will test your strength and put on an incredible display as they leap up out of the water. Peak season for Barracuda is December through March, right in time for your winter vacation.

Plus, Tarpon, Jack Crevalle, and Snook sightings only add to the fun.

So now that you know what fish you want to target, it's time to get out on the water.

There are plenty of ways to make the most out of your Aruba fishing experience, but in most cases, you want to hop aboard a charter boat. This is especially true if you're planning on targeting Billfish, Wahoo, or Mahi Mahi in deeper waters. As we mentioned earlier, you won't have to travel far before the action gets going. Fishing and chartering is a main source of income for many people living on Aruba, so you'll find plenty of knowledgeable guides ready to take you out to their secret honey holes.

Welcome to Aruba, where the sun always shines, the wind always blows, and friendliness is our way of life. What makes me feel proud during my fishing trips is when I see the people, the satisfaction that they had a good time and we caught some fish and everybody's happy. I target a variation of fish. If let's say we're doing a deep sea fishing trip, we target Wahoo, Kingfish, Barr Barracuda, Tuna.

During bottom fishing trips, most of my trips, I target Yellowtail snappers and Triggerfish. Triggerfish are very, very fun to catch. The best value of the money for the person, will recommend them a longer trip, maybe four to six hours because we have more time to try to catch fish, we have more time for snorkeling, it depends what kind of trip we are in. So the longer trip, the better for you guys.

If you're happy with the service, show your appreciation by leaving a tip. They'll also provide you with fishing gear, which is essential. Aruba is small, so don't count on a huge selection of tackle for sale or rent if you're fishing on your own. If you are bringing your own gear, fishing from Aruba's shores is just fine, especially if you're casting from the beaches. Not only can you take a dip into the warm waters between catches, but you'll have the chance to hook into some great fish. Many of the beaches are partially reef beaches, meaning snook, Bonefish, and Barracuda are all on offer when casting from lake.

And that's it! You're almost ready to go. If you're a tourist, you won't even have to purchase a fishing license. Fees aren't required for anglers fishing from a boat or from the shore. Just don't forget that Billfish are catch and release and that spearfishing is illegal across the island.

Whether you're arriving by plane or cruise ship looking to seek out deep or shallow waters, Aruba's got a fishing trip for you. And we're here to help make planning that trip a breeze.

FishingBooker helps you find the charter that's right for you and your family. Blink and you’ll miss it. This tiny paradise, nestled in the southern Caribbean Sea, is just 20 miles long and 5 miles wide. But boy does it leave an impression.

White sandy beaches, colorful homes, luxurious hotels, and turquoise blue waters meet the eye everywhere you look. And while it may be all peace and quiet on shore, the action on the water is startling. Whether you’re looking for a fierce battle with a large pelagic fish, or a display of skill in the shallow flats – Aruba’s got it.

Best Fish to Catch in Aruba?

The rich waters surrounding Aruba make fishing here an unforgettable experience. You can expect to hook into trophies both inshore and offshore. The list below only scratches the surface of what you can catch here, but we had to play favorites. So without further ado…

Marlin and Sailfish

As the biggest draw for visiting anglers, Billfish are likely to be your main targets on deep sea trips. First off, strong currents and rocky bottoms create perfect habitats for Blue Marlin. The search for your very own “grander” will surely be an adventure, especially if you take into account that the largest Blue Marlin caught on record weighed a whopping 1000 pounds.

Although a year-round target, your best chance to hook these fish and their White cousins is in the fall. Your pursuit of Blue and White Marlin will typically take place on the northeastern side of the island. The depth of the water here plummets to 1,000 feet just 3 miles from shore. You won’t have to travel far before the action starts heating up!

If you’re after a “Caribbean Grand Slam,” you’ll certainly want to add Sailfish to your target list. You’ll fish for these majestic creatures on the south side of the island. The waters here are shallower, and the productive grounds are around 5–15 miles from shore. This is where Aruba’s small size is an advantage. You can explore both Marlin and Sailfish habitats in a day’s work!

Wahoo and Mahi Mahi

If you ask the locals about their favorite fish, these two will top the list. Wahoo tend to congregate on the reefs, though you will find some further out in bluewater as well.

If you’re after even more delicious table fare, set your sights on Mahi Mahi. This colorful fish can be caught year-round, primarily on the west side of the island. Bonefish is hard to spot and even harder to catch – making it a favorite among fly anglers. It’s also lightning fast, hitting speeds of 40 miles per hour as it races across the flats. Bonefishing, and fly fishing in general, is best done between March–October.

Why? Mainly because it’s less windy. The wind can make casting difficult, but with enough line and experience your day can be very fulfilling. Unless you plan on fishing with a guide, be sure to bring all of your fly fishing gear with you. There are no tackle shops that cater to this fishing technique on the island so you’ll need to come prepared.

Barracuda

On those days you just can’t get a Bonefish to bite, you might have more luck with Barracuda. Skills like baiting your own hook and proper casting will go a long way.

Fishing from Shore

Lastly, if you haven’t got your sea legs yet, fishing from the shore is just fine. Beach fishing in Aruba is particularly great. Not only can you take a dip in the warm waters between catches, but you’ll have the chance to hook into some great fish. Many of the beaches are partially reef beaches, meaning Snook, Bonefish, and Barracuda are all on offer.

If you’re a more experienced angler, do as the locals do. Balloon fishing from the beach requires more skill, but could have you going home with Snapper and Grouper. You’ll be responsible for your own gear when fishing from the beach so it’s best to bring yours with you from home. Aruba is small, so don’t count on a huge selection of tackle for sale or rent.

Aruba Fishing Spots

You’d think it would be easy to narrow down the best fishing spots on a tiny island. Not in Aruba! The next few locations are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Aruban angling. The reality is, the waters are so productive here that most anywhere you decide to cast a line is likely to be fruitful. Nonetheless, here are our top picks.

Malmok Beach: Located on the northern tip of the island, Malmok is partially a reef beach. Stay ashore and you can cast for the likes of Barracuda, Snook, and Bonefish. This is also a great spot for snorkeling enthusiasts.

Renaissance Marina: Just a short drive or walk from the capital, Oranjestad, Renaissance Marina is located among some pretty luxurious hotels. It’s also home to plenty of fishing charters and a great spot to head out from for a deep sea fishing trip.

Manchebo Beach: Thanks to its location on the southwestern side of the island, Manchebo Beach is sheltered from the strong winds that can make fishing in Aruba difficult. Head offshore and you’ll be hooking into Tuna, Mahi Mahi, and Kingfish before you know it.

Noord: Following Oranjestad, Noord is the second-largest town on the island. It’s windier than the southwestern coast, but it’s also an excellent spot to go after Blue and White Marlin, Mahi Mahi, and Tuna.

Spanish Lagoon: The Spanish Lagoon borders the southernmost tip of Parke Nacional Arikok. Fly anglers won’t want to miss out on the chance to cast for Tarpon, Bonefish, and Barracuda here. Hop on a flats boat or kayak to make the most of it.

When to Go Fishing in Aruba

Fishing in Aruba is a year-round angling adventure. The weather is always warm and each season brings a variety of fish species for you to target.

Some species, such as Marlin, are up for grabs throughout the entire year, but at the same time, there are several months during the year when these giants simply dominate the angling scene. So, if you want to boost your odds of reeling in enviable White or Blue Marlin specimens, go fishing in Aruba in fall.

The same goes for other underwater residents like Mahi Mahi, Bonefish, Barracuda, Wahoo, etc. You can almost always spot these fish meandering Aruba’s waters. However, some months are simply more prolific. The peak season for Bonefish fishing is between March and October, whereas the high season for Barracuda pursuits is from December through March. Meanwhile, Mahi Mahi rule the waters in summer.

Aruba Fishing Regulations

Before you start booking a flight and packing your tackle, there are a few more things to take into consideration. The first being fishing licenses. Luckily, these aren’t complicated in Aruba. In fact, you don’t even need one. If you’re coming to the island in pursuit of Billfish, please know that all Billfish are catch and release only.
