We'll fill you in on what you can expect to catch, the best time to plan your trip, some of the best fishing spots, and the most popular techniques in the area. After watching this video, you’ll be one step closer to exploring the Gulf and experiencing some of the best fisheries in the world. Year in and year out, anglers from all over the world come to Destin, Florida to check out this fishing goldmine.\r\n\r\nWhat started as a small fishing village in the 1800s has blossomed into one of the top fishing destinations in the Gulf of Mexico.\r\n\r\nI’ve fished all over this planet, anywhere and everywhere I’ve wanted to and to say the least, this is the only place I’ve never been skunked. Never been out here and not caught something. So, it’s probably the best fishing on the planet as far as I’m concerned.\r\n\r\nWith some of the most diverse fishing grounds, it’s no wonder this small town has earned the reputation of the “World’s Luckiest Fishing Village.” Destin is located on Florida’s Emerald Coast, nestled between Pensacola and Panama City Beach. Its white sandy beaches and crystal blue waters attract millions of tourists each year, but just a few miles offshore, you’ll also discover a jackpot of exciting fishing opportunities. So\r\n\r\nwhat really excites me about fishing, especially fishing here out of Destin in the Gulf, is you never really know what you're going to get.\r\n\r\nThere are so many species and so many big game fish that we can get to out here on day trips that it’s really exciting, you know? There’s something new in store every trip. It really makes you want to get up and get out there, get you out of bed. Since the 1980s, Destin has become one of the top go-to spots on every angler’s bucket list.\r\n\r\nThey don’t call Florida the Sunshine State for nothing and Destin is a prime example of this The area gets about 230 sunny days each year, so you can expect a lot of sunshine almost any time you visit. In the winter, average highs rarely dip below 60 degrees Fahrenheit; meanwhile, Destin’s highest temperatures average in the low 90s during July, the hottest month of the year. Needless to say, these shores are perfect for a family getaway almost any time you travel! The best part about fishing in Destin is, that no matter when you plan to visit, you’ll be sure to get a fair cut of the action!\r\n\r\nEven when the weather gets colder, the fishing remains hot.\r\n\r\nDestin is well-known for its competitive fishing as well. It’s home to a variety of fishing tournaments each year, such as the Destin Fishing Rodeo and Emerald Coast Blue Marlin Classic.\r\n\r\nThe cold seasons produce lots of exciting opportunities for inshore fishing, where you’ll be able to target species such as Redfish, Speckled Trout, Flounder, and Black Drum.\r\n\r\nOffshore bottom fishing is also solid during the colder months and provides plenty of opportunities for reeling in the likes of Grouper, Vermillion Snapper, and Amberjack. As the waters begin to warm up in springtime, the action starts to get a bit more intense and the variety of bites increases. Many reef species come out of hibernation and show up closer to shore.\r\n\r\nOnce May starts to roll around it’s time for offshore trolling!\r\n\r\nPelagic species such as Mahi Mahi, King Mackerel, and Wahoo show up in large numbers and they last throughout the summer. Once June, July, and August come around, it’s time to whip out the big guns and target big game on heavy tackle. Marlin, Sailfish, and Tuna flood the offshore waters, as well as delicious Snapper and Grouper species.\r\n\r\nIf I had to pick my favorite, its probably bottom fishing, because of the action.\r\n\r\nYou go out there and you send the lines down and most trips, it’s just “bam, bam, bam.” You’ve got fish on, you’re getting them in the boat. It’s just a lot of action.\r\n\r\nI love being out at the oil rigs.\r\n\r\nSomething about catching these big Yellowfin, its the ultimate fish to bring in. Whether you’re deep dropping for Tuna out at the oil rigs or sight fishing for Tarpon in the back bays, you’ll surely get what you’re looking for. These types of trips typically range from 4 to 6 hours, while offshore trips can range anywhere from 8 to 36 hours.\r\n\r\nThe shorter hour trips are really entry-level trips, to let people get out there, and you know we’re not really going too far offshore.\r\n\r\nBut you know, I know once you go once, you’re going to want a longer trip after that because you’re not going to want to come home. It's a lot of fun.\r\n\r\nWell, basically the six-hour trip you can do the best of both worlds. You can to the trolling to these bottom spots you’re going to, and then you spend a couple of hours there and do some more trolling, you know, and than you get the best of both worlds.\r\n\r\nThe biggest thing is, in saltwater fishing, you really never know. It's just, you know, what's on the end of the line is probably the most exciting part of it, even if you are targeting one species. Destin offers a wide variety of charters year-round and holds the largest fishing fleet in all of North America. If you want to bottom fish over reefs, troll the continental shelf, or fly fish in the bay, there are plenty of charters that will tailor each trip based on your preferences and target the species that you want.\r\n\r\nMost charter captains will cover your tackle and bait, and some will also provide snacks and drinks as well. Coolers are usually available on board for you to bring your own refreshments and keep them nice and cold throughout the ride. The boat, gas, and crew are usually included in the price as well. The only thing you should bring with you is sunscreen, a hat, and your favorite pair of sunglasses.\r\n\r\nAll saltwater charters are licensed to cover everyone on board, so there’s no need to purchase a fishing license on your own. Just come straight to the harbor, bring any essential items you may need, and you’re all set.
