There’s the mighty Pacific with Tuna, Marlin, and Halibut, Lake Tahoe with Salmon and Trout, and other lakes and streams with Bass and Kokanee.

Month by month, this guide describes the best of California fishing season. It covers the most interesting spots to wet your line, as well as the top catches throughout the year. So without further ado, let’s talk about what you can expect.

What to expect from California’s fishing seasons?

So, you want to go fishing in California and are looking to see when’s the best time. What we mentioned above is perfectly true — it’s always a good time to fish in the Golden State. However, your chosen location is always essential when it comes to the best time to fish in California — or anywhere else for that matter.

For instance, the best time to fish for Salmon and Trout on Lake Tahoe is in early spring and late summer. The high season in San Diego begins in April and lasts until October when Tuna and Marlin migrate through the area. However, it doesn’t mean that there’s nothing else biting outside of the peak months!

California Fishing Calendar – Saltwater

Species

Jan

Feb

Mar

Apr

May

Jun

Jul

Aug

Sep

Oct

Nov

Dec

Yellowtail Amberjack

Weak

Weak

Good

Good

Good

Great

Great

Great

Great

Great

Good

Weak

Mako Shark

Weak

Weak

Weak

Good

Great

Great

Great

Great

Great

Great

Good

Weak

California Sheephead

Ban

Ban

Great

Great

Great

Great

Great

Great

Great

Great

Great

Great

Crab

Good

Good

Good

Good

Good

Good

Good

Weak

Weak

Weak

Great

Great

Halibut

Good

Good

Good

Great

Great

Great

Great

Weak

Weak

Good

Good

Good

Lingcod

Ban

Ban

Great

Great

Great

Great

Great

Great

Great

Great

Great

Great

Rockfish

Ban

Ban

Great

Great

Great

Great

Great

Great

Great

Great

Great

Great

Bluefin Tuna

Weak

Weak

Weak

Weak

Good

Great

Great

Good

Good

Weak

Weak

Weak

California Fishing Calendar –
