Well, the city is located on a barrier island that separates Grand Egg Harbor Bay from the Atlantic Ocean. This means you’ll have access to both the sheltered inshore waters and the deep seas when fishing from Ocean City. Because of this, there’ll be a whole host of fish species to catch, all depending on where you prefer to go.

Throughout this article, we’ll delve deeper into what makes this fishery so amazing. You’ll get to read about the most popular species anglers like to fish for in Ocean City. We’ll also go over a few ways to tackle these waters, as well as where to try your luck. When you’re ready, read on!

Best Fish to Catch in Ocean City

Let’s focus on the most important things first – the fish you can target out here. Thanks to the quality of these waters, there are many species you’ll get to wrestle with in Ocean City. Let’s go over some of the favorites…

Striped Bass

Known as Rockfish along the Atlantic Coast, the tough-fighting Striped Bass is a beloved species in Ocean City. And how could it not be? Stripers are among the most thrilling fish an angler can hope to battle. They’ll tap your bait with mad intent and make blitzing runs to shake off your hook. Once you’ve finally tired them out, Striped Bass meat will serve as a delicious dinner.

In Ocean City, you can catch Stripers both inside the bay and out in the ocean. Their season generally opens at the beginning of March and lasts until the end of December each year. However, the best times to catch these fish are generally between April and July, and then again in October. You’ll often find Striped Bass lurking around different underwater structure, ledges, and bars. Out in the ocean, you’ll find trophy-sized Stripers lurking around reefs.

Black Seabass and Tautog

If you’re looking to put some fish in the freezer, there are hardly better targets in Ocean City than Black Seabass and Tautog. Both are fun to fight and are excellent table fare. Since they’re both bottom fish, they’re great options for beginner anglers. Out of the two, Tautog are a bit more tricky to catch. Their initial bite is often soft, making it more difficult for novice anglers to know when to set the hook.

Another thing that’s great about fishing for these two species is that you can find them close to the coast. They like hanging around jetties, rip-raps, and inlets, which are often accessible even to shoreline anglers. Of course, the big ones lurk in the ocean – near reefs, wrecks, and other bottom structures.

The only thing that you should keep in mind when attempting to target Tautog and Black Seabass is their season. You can fish for them for most of the year, but there are a number of closures. Their size and bag limits also change quite often, so make sure you brush up on them before heading out.

Tuna

What would this list look like if we missed out on mentioning the biggest, toughest, most sought-after fish in this part of the Atlantic – Bluefin Tuna? In terms of catch difficulty, they sit at the very top of the list. Bluefins are incredibly intelligent and elusive. They also change their moving patterns all the time, making it hard to predict when and where they’ll show up.

If you do manage to hook one, get ready for the battle of a lifetime. Giant Bluefin Tuna can fight for hours on end and push anglers to their physical and mental limits. Even smaller ones pull incredibly hard, so you can always count on them presenting you with a challenge.

Besides Bluefin Tuna, you’ll also get the chance to reel their Yellowfin cousins while deep sea fishing out of Ocean City. Generally, you’ll be able to target both throughout summer and fall. Just be ready to head far offshore, as the hottest action takes place along the distant underwater canyons.
<div class='featured-charters-container' data-trigger='featured-charters' data-destination-id='1289' data-destination-title='Ocean City' data-perpage='4' data-currency='USD'data-filter-field='fishFilter'data-filter-value='tuna_bluefin'data-headline='Top Bluefin Tuna Fishing Charters in Ocean City'data-add-type='m'>

Mahi Mahi and Wahoo

The species we’ve mentioned so far can generally be found fairly close to land except for Tuna and other bigger game, such as Mahi Mahi or Wahoo. For them, you’ll have to set course for the deep seas. Both species visit these waters during summer and you’ll start seeing them once you’re 20 miles offshore.

When it comes to game quality, both Mahi Mahi and Wahoo offer amazing battles. But between the two, Mahi Mahi are easier to catch. When you hook them, they’ll typically fight hard in the beginning. You’ll feel their strength and speed but it’ll last only for a short while because they generally tire quickly.

Wahoo, on the other hand, are among the fastest fish in the ocean. When hooked, Wahoo will take off on lightning-fast runs, making your reel scream like it’s judgment day. If you manage to keep them on and bring them in, you’ll have an angling achievement to take pride in. Also, it’s worth noting that both Mahi Mahi and Wahoo taste absolutely delicious.

And Others!

We’ve presented a few of our favorites, but these fish are far from the only species you can catch in Ocean City. Close to shore, you can fish for Fluke, Bluefish, Triggerfish, Spanish Mackerel, Weakfish, and a whole lot more. From angling in the back bays to wrestling deep ocean giants, anything becomes possible with the right vessel. And unless you can operate a watercraft yourself, the easiest way to have a boat fishing adventure is to hook up with one of the charter captains in Ocean City.

These seasoned guides will not only provide you with the boat and the equipment you’ll need for your trip, but they know these waters better than anyone else. However, knowing where the hotspots are will still help you set the correct expectations for your trip.

Rainbow Island Fishing Pier: Overlooking the Grand Egg Harbor Bay, this fishing pier is one of the best places to fish from in Ocean City. You can catch a variety of species from the pier, including Striped Bass, Fluke, Mackerel, Black Seabass, and more. The Elbow Thorofare Fishing Pier is also close by, in case you get the itch to switch spots.

Great Harbor Egg Inlet: Separating the bay from the Atlantic Ocean, Great Harbor Egg Inlet serves as a passageway for all kinds of inshore fish. Near the inlet, you’ll get to catch Stripers, plenty of Fluke, Black Seabass, Bluefish, Tautog, and even Dusky Smooth-hound Sharks. From this point on, you can decide either to venture into the bay or further into the ocean.

Nearshore Reefs: Just a few miles off the coast of Ocean City, you’ll find different collections of artificial reefs housing all kinds of fish. They bear names such as Atlantic City, Great Egg, and Little Egg and they all serve as productive fishing spots. Here, you can expect to catch big Stripers, Black Seabass, Tautog, Bluefish, and several other species.

28 Mile Wreck: Named for roughly how far you have to go in order to reach it, the 28 Mile Wreck is a great place to explore if you’re heading offshore. It’s also called “The Varanger” after the ship that lies sunken there. Fishing the wrecks, you’ll get to catch Black Seabass, Tautog, Sharks, and even pelagics such as Mahi Mahi.

Offshore Canyons: The continental shelf found around 70 miles off the coast of Ocean City features a range of different underwater canyons. Along these, you’ll find some of the fiercest game fish in the world, including Bluefin and Yellowfin Tuna, Swordfish, Marlin, Wahoo, and more. The canyons are where fishing legends are made, as long as you’re willing and able to make the journey.

When to Go Fishing in Ocean City

The main fishing season in Ocean City takes place from spring through fall. It’s when you’ll find most of the local species biting, whether it’s inshore or offshore. The period between March and May is the hottest time to go for trophy Stripers. Just keep in mind that it’s all catch and release until their season opens in mid-May. Once the official season kicks in, though, you can expect the Striper bite to stay excellent throughout the fall.

When it comes to offshore angling, the summer brings all kinds of pelagics to this part of the East Coast. King Mackerel, Bluefish, and Cobia will all be biting fairly close to shore. Deeper in the ocean, you’ll get to face the likes of Marlin, Tuna, Mahi Mahi, huge Sharks, and more. The deep sea action lasts through October, when things begin to slow down again.

Ocean City Fishing Regulations
<wistia-player media-id="7yfey2hvbp" aspect="1.7777777777777777">

Thinking about casting a line in the Garden State's diverse waterways? From ice fishing freshwater lakes to battling monsters in the mighty Atlantic Ocean, this small state offers a huge range of action. But before you start, you're going to need a New Jersey fishing license.

In this video, we'll cover everything you need to know about getting a fishing license in New Jersey, including the different types of permits on offer and where you can get yours. But before we dive in, don't forget to hit the like and subscribe buttons below to stay up to date on all the latest fishing videos. If you're looking for information on any neighboring states or anywhere else in the US, check out the licenses playlist on our channel.

So first things first, who needs a New Jersey fishing license? When it comes to freshwater fishing, everyone between the ages of sixteen and seventy needs to have a valid permit. As for saltwater, there aren't any license requirements, but there are some special permits which we'll discuss later. If you're thinking about going saltwater fishing in New Jersey, now would be a good time to click the link in the description box below and take a look at the saltwater charters on offer. If you're hitting the rivers and lakes, stay with us.

So you know you need a permit to fish in freshwater, but what exactly does that mean? This basically all boils down to whether you're a New Jersey resident or not.

If you've been a resident of New Jersey for the last six months, then you can get a freshwater fishing license valid until the end of the year. These will set you back just over twenty dollars with around a fifty percent discount for residents over the age of sixty four.

New Jersey residents also have the option of buying a combined hunting and fishing license. This is also valid through the end of the year, but there are no discounts for seniors.

Now we mentioned that over seventies are exempt from having to get a license, but anglers should always carry proof of the age with them to prove that they're fishing legally. Other than that,

there are three groups of residents who don't need a license. Resident National Guard members, veterans with a service connected disability, and the legally blind can fish in the Garden State free of charge. If you're a nonresident, there's a wider range of licenses on offer to you. Choose from two day or seven day licenses, or you can also pick up a permit that's good through the end of the year. Just be aware that you can expect to pay around fifty percent more than a New Jerseyite would. For detailed pricing, check out our extensive blog post by hitting the link in the description box below.

What about fishing with a friend? New Jersey has introduced a special buddy license, which allows you to buy one license and get one for a friend at half price. Just make sure that that friend hasn't had an annual fishing license since twenty ten, and you're good to welcome them to the sport.

Along with your freshwater fishing license, you'll also need a special stamp if you plan on targeting Trout. These are available to nonresidents and residents alike, with nonresidents usually paying around double the price.

So we've run through your freshwater fishing permits, but what about saltwater? As we mentioned, no license is needed, but you will need to register at the New Jersey Saltwater Recreational Registry Program. However, if you're going out with licensed charter, they'll have you covered. So why not book a trip with one of the numerous New Jersey saltwater fishing charters on offer? In addition to that, you'll also need a license if you plan on going shell fishing. Crabbing, clamming, you name it, you need a permit. These come in cheap for both residents and nonresidents with resident seniors and kids being able to take advantage of price discounts.

Now what about buying your New Jersey fishing license? First of all, you'll need to obtain a conservation identification number.

For first time buyers, you can get your CID when you create a customer account on the licensing website or at an agent. This is convenient because these are two of the ways of getting your license too. Head to the New Jersey Department for Fish and Wildlife website to purchase a license online or head to one of the numerous vendors dotted around the state to get yours in person. You can also get your license and any information you may need over the phone or via email with the DFW.

Just remember your CIN and a form of ID, and you're good to go.

So to wrap things up, let's take a look at what we've learned today. Anglers between sixteen and seventy need a license for freshwater fishing, while saltwater anglers just need to register online.

You may need a Trout stamp or shell fishing permit if you decide to target these species, and you can get all New Jersey fishing licenses online, in person, or by phone.

Now that you know how to get your New Jersey fishing license, it's time to get out on the water. If you need more information, hit the link in the description box and check out our extensive blog post. You can also drop us a line in the comments below. Otherwise, why not book a New Jersey fishing charter on fishing booker dot com and make the most out of the Garden State's diverse angling action.

</wistia-player>
Here’s what’s interesting about saltwater fishing in Ocean City, as well as elsewhere in New Jersey – you don’t need a license. New Jersey only requires you to complete this free registration process in order to fish in saltwater. On charters, the captain is required to register you, saving you some time. Just keep in mind that there are a few additional permits, such as one for harvesting Crabs, that you may consider purchasing. You can read more on those in our dedicated New Jersey fishing license article.

The only other thing you need to pay attention to are the size and bag limits for each fish you intend on catching.
