It’s the perfect vacation spot, whether you’re looking to rest or enjoy one of its many activities. And while the town itself is located in Florida, it would be no exaggeration to say that fishing in Jupiter is out of this world.

There are a few different reasons why fishing here is so good. For starters, the town is located on Jupiter Inlet. Besides being a fantastic spot for fishing, it also gives you access to the Loxahatchee as well as the Indian River. And if you venture east of the inlet? You guessed it, you’ll be fishing the Atlantic Ocean and catching some of the most prized game fish out there.

If you’re keen to learn a bit more about this prolific fishery, keep reading. We’ll cover all the different fish you can catch in Jupiter, spots to explore, and ways to go fishing out there. Later in the article, you’ll also find out more about some basic regulations to keep in mind. When you’re ready, scroll on.

Best Fish to Catch in Jupiter

Let’s start off by naming some of the species you’ll encounter fishing in this part of Florida. There are many, of course, so we’ll present a few we believe you might find interesting to go after. Let’s jump in…

Snook and Redfish

Found all over Jupiter’s coastal waters, Snook and Redfish are among the most beloved inshore species in Florida. Snook are famous for drag-screaming runs and acrobatic twists and turns they make during the fight. Redfish, on the other hand, are tenacious and stubborn creatures, never giving up easily.

Although you can catch them year-round, peak Snook season runs from spring to fall, when the waters are warm. And while Redfish are also year-round residents in these waters, big Bull Redfish usually make an appearance in the fall.

You’ll find both Snook and Redfish lurking around bridges, docks, beaches, inlets, and mangroves. Jupiter is particularly famous for its monster Snook fishing, some of the best in Florida. Redfish are abundant as well, and always willing to eat your bait or lure if presented with precision.

Tarpon

Another inshore superstar you can encounter in these waters is Tarpon. Packing tough, bony mouths, immense power, and acrobatics to rival even Sailfish, Silver Kings are one of the most exhilarating challenges you can hope to encounter. The fight Tarpon put up is simply epic and it’ll take all your skill and stamina to bring one in.

You can find resident juvenile Tarpon hiding in the Loxahatchee River year-round. However, the best action happens during the spring mullet run and up until July. That’s when you’ll get the opportunity to catch monster Tarpon and experience what it’s like to “bow to the King.” But even if you miss that, Tarpon also show up in good numbers during the fall mullet run.

In terms of spots, your best bet is to fish around bridges, jetties, and inlets. These attract baitfish and consequently Tarpon that feed on them. You can either use live bait, such as mullet, pinfish, and croakers, or artificial mullet lures during the runs, as well as large silver spoons.
<div class='featured-charters-container' data-trigger='featured-charters' data-destination-id='208' data-destination-title='Jupiter' data-perpage='4' data-currency='USD'data-filter-field='fishFilter'data-filter-value='tarpon'data-headline='Top Tarpon Fishing Charters in Jupiter'data-add-type='m'>

Snapper and Grouper

If you’re in the mood to catch some fresh fish for dinner, Jupiter is home to different species of Snapper and Grouper that make for perfect table fare. Close to shore, you’ll get the opportunity to reel in Mangrove and Mutton Snapper. Besides being extremely fun to fight, most Groupers make for excellent table fare. The only catch is that, much like Red Snapper, Grouper fishing is highly regulated. When targeting them, you’ll need to pay close attention to the size and bag limits.

Most Grouper species can’t be targeted between January and May on the Atlantic side of Florida. However, with the exception of Red Snapper, whose season usually opens only in summer, you can target other Snapper species year-round. And while regulations may sometimes get in the way of harvesting fish, reef fishing in Jupiter is truly hot whenever you go.

Billfish

If you’ve already caught most of what’s out there and are now itching for an even greater challenge, look no further than Billfish. Offshore of Jupiter, you’ll get the opportunity to target Blue Marlin, White Marlin, Sailfish, and even Swordfish. These four species present what’s probably the ultimate angling challenge you can find. Each will put up a fight you’ll remember for the rest of your life.

Sailfish and Marlin are both elusive and incredibly tough fighters if you’re fortunate enough to hook them. They’re some of the fastest fish in the ocean, capable of powerful, lightning-fast runs, as well as acrobatic leaps. It’s a fight like no other.

Swordfish, on the other hand, are arguably even harder to catch. They lurk in the ocean depths, requiring specialized deep dropping gear for even a chance to hook them. If you do manage to get a bite, be prepared to experience a pitched battle. Swordfish will try to slash your line with their sword-like bills, shake off your hook with their acrobatics, and make your drag scream with their powerful runs.

The best time to try your luck with Billfish is during summer. We’ll go over a few common options, in case you’re on the fence about how to fish out here.

Charter Fishing

Between the rivers, the inshore fishing grounds, and the deep seas, there’s a lot of water to cover in this part of Florida. And who better to do it with than one of the experienced charter captains in Jupiter? As you move into the Gulf Stream, you’ll get the opportunity to catch species ranging from Billfish and Tuna to Wahoo, Mahi Mahi, as well as big bottom fish. It’s a world-class fishery at your doorstep.

When to Go Fishing in Jupiter

You’ve probably already guessed that fishing in Jupiter is brilliant year-round, but let’s take a look at what you can catch when you visit. Come in winter and you’ll mostly be focusing on inshore fishing. That means plenty of Jack Crevalle and Redfish. However, if you find a calm day, you can head nearshore and target Groupers (in December) along with Mackerel, Cobia, and Snappers.

Things really start heating up in spring, though — and the action stays hot throughout summer and fall. This is when all the most sought-after game fish come to town. Start the season going after Cobia, Amberjacks, and Sharks before switching up to Groupers, Red Snapper, and pelagic offshore monsters like Marlin and Sailfish. These stay active until mid-fall, when inshore fishing heats up once more.

Jupiter Fishing Regulations
<wistia-player media-id="orwuaw1dvv" aspect="1.7777777777777777">

Hi guys, I’m Mark,

and today we’ll be going over how to get a fishing license in the beautiful state of Florida. There are lots of questions on the internet about who needs a fishing license, whether you need one when you’re hopping on a charter boat, and what are some of the exceptions. So, I’ll try to address some of these questions so hopefully you spend less time looking for answers and more time fishing. Luckily, getting the right type of fishing license in Florida is super easy.

And since you can fish without a license on a charter boat or even on a licensed pier, Florida is probably one of the easiest states to plan a fishing trip in. Since Florida offers such a wide variety of fishing packages, it’s important to know which one is right for you.

The two main types of licenses are saltwater and freshwater licenses. Just some words of advice, if you’ll be fishing in brackish water or anywhere where you might be targeting a mixture of both freshwater and saltwater species, I recommend getting both types of licenses.

The last thing you want to do is hook a fish that you’re not covered to catch and get a fine because of that.

The good news for visitors coming to Florida is that all saltwater fishing charters cover licenses for everyone onboard, so you don’t have to worry about purchasing one on your own. However, if you choose to fish with a guide in freshwater, you will need to purchase your own license. You can fish for most species with a regular saltwater or freshwater fishing license.

However, there

are some species that require additional tags. These include Snook, Tarpon, and Spiny Lobster. Also, be aware of seasonality for certain species, such as Red Snapper in federal waters. These rules can change year-to-year, so just be sure to stay up-to-date with any local regulations and you should be good.

Long story short,

all non-residents over 16 and any resident aged between 16 and 65 will need to purchase a fishing license before heading out. Also, this is very important to know: anyone involved in any type of fishing activities also needs to purchase a fishing license. For example, if you’re helping your friend by baiting their hooks or setting up any of their gear, you will also need to purchase a fishing license. Again, as mentioned earlier, if you’re hopping on a saltwater charter you will not need to buy a fishing license.

You don’t need a license to fish from a licensed pier in Florida as well. Florida residents with severe disabilities can fish for free with a Florida Resident Disabled Person Hunting and Fishing License. Military personnel from Florida can fish for free if they’re visiting home for up to a month. Florida residents receiving benefits or food stamps from the government can do land-based saltwater fishing without a license.

Any Florida resident can get a free shoreline fishing license, which allows you to fish for saltwater species from land or from structures that are attached to land. If you are 65 and over, and are from out of state, you will still need a regular salt or freshwater fishing license. However, senior Florida residents can fish for free but must bring proof of age and address. Anyone who’s eligible to fish without a license should make sure to bring proof that they are qualified to do so in order to show to the Coast Guard.

For instance, children under 16 should bring proof of age with them at all times. If you’re caught fishing without a license and you’re eligible for one, you will have to pay the cost of the license plus an additional fine. The penalty starts usually at $50, so make sure all your paperwork is in order before you head out on the water. The easiest

way to purchase your Florida fishing license is online and you can do so at Gofloridaoutdoors.com

or by visiting the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s main website. You can also buy it over the phone. Just call the toll-free number 888-FISH-FLORIDA or 888-347-4356. They’re available at all registered retailers such as Walmart, tax collector’s offices, and registered bait and tackle shops across the state.

Annual fishing licenses in Florida are valid for 12 months from the date that they were issued. The expiration date will be printed on the license itself. Once it expires, you can renew your fishing license at any official retailer. If your fishing license is lost or stolen, you can purchase a replacement for only $2.

For the most part, your license is usually only valid in Florida but there are some interstate waters that border with Georgia where you can fish with your Florida license. These are St. Mary’s River and Lake Seminole.

Now that you have all the information you need, you can finally get out there and test out the waters of the Sunshine State!

For more information, be sure to check out our full blog article that goes into more detail about how to get a Florida Fishing License.
