They stick to the Gulf Stream and are a prized catch on the Atlantic Coast. The best time to get one is during the winter months.

Marlin: Even though they’re far more elusive than Sailfish, going after Blue and White Marlin is the pinnacle of saltwater fishing in Florida. A lot of professional guides focus on giant Blue Marlin, but both species can be caught in the Gulf Stream. You might have to travel far to find them, but having a 500+ lb Marlin on the line is an experience like no other. Come in summer for the best action.

Swordfish: The sneakiest of all Billfish, Swordfish require a lot of effort to be found, and even more to be caught. The answer is simple – there’s always something good to fish for, no matter when you come. With the warm waters of the Gulf in the west and the Gulf Stream near Florida’s Atlantic Coast in the east, the one thing you won’t lack is choice.

The general rule of thumb is that spring and summer are the most productive times of the year. This is when both inshore and offshore game fish come out to play and the bite is off the charts. However, there are species like Cobia, Sailfish, and Wahoo, which are at their best during winter. The best thing to do is to plan your trip according to the seasonality of the fish you’d like to catch.

Fishing seasons in Florida can be tricky to navigate, and you can learn more about them in this dedicated article. With so many opportunities around each corner, you'll be able to explore the sport fishing capital of the world and experience the thrill of a lifetime. Here are some of our top choices. Let's dive in.

Number ten, Jacksonville. Jacksonville sits right on the mouth of the St. Johns River, facing the Atlantic. Ocean. This town offers endless freshwater and saltwater opportunities for both types of anglers. No matter where you go, you can expect a day full of action targeting the likes of Cobia, Redfish, Blackdrum, and King Mackerel.

Whether you're a competitive angler or you're just getting started, this area's got plenty of charters that will hook you up and show you an amazing day on the water.

Number nine, Daytona Beach.

Daytona Beach has a lot to offer. Famous for its beaches, tourism, and recreation, this town is the perfect destination for a family vacation. Combining a fishing trip with a day in the sun is quite common. You can fish the calm waters of the Halifax River or head offshore for an epic battle against some of the Atlantic's most sought after fish. Head south to Mosquito Lagoon and get ready to hook into a variety of species, including Snook, Red and Black drum, and Sheepshead. If you're looking for a longer trip, book a deep sea charter that will take you trolling for Wahoo and many other pelagic species. While visiting, be sure to check out everything Daytona Beach has to offer, including its famous International Speedway, and last but not least, its amazing beaches.

Number eight, Sarasota. Sarasota is best known for its inshore fishing, and there's a good reason why. With its vast network of flats, sandbars, and seagrass meadows, this is the prime spot for sight casting and fly fishing. You can either wade in the shallows or pull your way through mangrove tunnels in search of Redfish, Snook, Sea Trout, and Tarpon. If you're up for some bottom fishing, you'll definitely want to check out some of the reefs in the area where you'll target a range of species, from snapper and grouper to bluefish and sheepshead.

Number seven, Naples. Naples is located right in the heart of Florida's Paradise Coast. Its pristine beaches and turquoise waters make this town an excellent family destination. One of the most popular activities for families to do is, of course, fishing.

Naples has something in store all year round. You can pick a guide to take you backcountry fishing, where you'll weave through mangroves and castover flats to catch everything from spotted sea trout to black tip shark. There are lots of excellent inland canals that can make a half day trip extra rewarding here. If you're up for a challenge, fly fishing can produce lots of great action against the likes of tarpon, Snook, Permit, and many other inshore species.

If you have a few extra hours to spare, you can head offshore and tick some big game fish off your bucket list. It really all just depends on what you're in the mood for.

Number six, Fort Myers, Cape Coral. Fort Myers is one of Southwest Florida's most famed fisheries. If you're looking to catch a backcountry slam, this is the place to get it done. Snook, trout, and redfish flood the waterways between here and Cape Coral, giving inshore anglers the thrill of a lifetime. Other top species here include Goliath Grouper, Tarpon, Various Sharks, Mangrove Snapper, Cobia, and the list goes on.

The reason why so many people come to Fort Myers is its access to an endless amount of fishing opportunities.

Whether it's fly fishing in the bay or bottom fishing over reefs, you want to combine a few types of trips and take in everything this area has to offer. Some of Fort Myers' most prized fishing spots that are definitely worth checking out are San Carlos Bay, Matt Lache Pass, and Pine Island Sound. You can go kayaking through the mangroves, have a picnic on the beach, go bird watching, or spend the whole day reeling in a boatload of fish. It's all up to you.

Number five, Miami. Fishing in Miami is often overlooked by its vibrant culture and exciting nightlife. This cosmopolitan city has a lot to offer its tourists, which is why it's one of the most visited cities in the US. However, those who have experienced the fishing scene know that it's one of the most exclusive fisheries in all of Florida. Miami's deep sea fishing is the main attraction. You can head down famous Sailfish Alley and reel in big pelagic fish with the city skyline in the background.

Hundreds of sailfish, as well as wahoo, tuna, and mahi mahi funnel through Miami's offshore waters, giving deep sea anglers a lot to look forward to. If you're looking to stay closer to shore, the Biscayne Bay is only a short boat ride away.

Hanging out on the beach, partying, shopping, all that is fun. But if you make your way to Miami and you don't go fishing, it would be a shame.

Number four, Tampa Bay.

Tampa Bay's inshore fishing is among the best in Florida. This area holds large numbers of red and black drum, snook, jack crevalle, spotted sea trout, sheepshead, and many more.

And the best part is, no matter what time of year you go fishing, there's always something biting. Across the bay, the cities of Clearwater, St. Petersburg, and St. Pete Beach host some of the hottest spots where you can do everything from fly fishing to bottom fishing. You can also explore the Florida Middle Grounds for some offshore action and reel in Amberjack, Blackfin Tuna, Red Snapper, and Gag Grouper. Whether you opt for a half day, full day, or extended charter out in the Gulf, you won't be disappointed. With so many options on hand, we have a feeling you'll be coming back to Tampa Bay several times to check out everything this region has in store.

Number three, Panama City Beach.

Thousands of anglers make this town their yearly seaside destination, and it's no secret why. Its productive waters, beautiful beaches, and array of inshore opportunities make PCV a go to family fishing vacation spot.

Its long stretches of white sandy beach make fishing off the surf a rewarding experience. Its endless access to shallow flats makes sight casting extremely satisfying as well. Seeing the fish as they come up to the boat while you cast out is fun for the whole family. The PCB is also a popular launching spot for many offshore charters. If you're experienced in the art of deep sea fishing and you have enough time to set aside for a full day trip, then you have no choice but to check out Panama City's offshore fishing scene.

Number two, Destin.

Nicknamed the world's luckiest fishing village, Destin is Florida's most appreciated fishing town. Nestled between Chuktawache Bay and the Gulf of Mexico, Destin has the perfect mix of inshore and offshore fishing. And man, is it amazing. You can pick a charter to take you out to the Hundred Fathom Curve where the floor drops six hundred feet below sea level. You can also explore the edge of the continental shelf and target a range of both pelagic and bottom species. Your targets for the day will include big grouper and snapper species, as well as Amberjack, mahi mahi, tuna, wahoo, and billfish.

If you're a competitive fisherman, then you'll definitely want to check out the Destin Fishing Rodeo and Emerald Coast Blue Marlin Classic. Hundreds of anglers from all over the country hit the shores of Destin each year to win thousands of dollars in cash and to earn the bragging rights to last them a lifetime.

Destin's got something for everyone. Whether you're a seasoned angler looking to sharpen your skills or a beginner testing out the waters for the first time, there are hundreds of charters available waiting to take you on an unforgettable adventure.

Number one, Florida Keys.

If you've ever imagined a fishing paradise, chances are you're probably thinking of something close to, if not exactly like, the Florida Keys. All you have to do is take a drive from Key Largo down to Key West, and you'll immediately understand why it's earned the reputation it has. The Florida Keys is a one hundred mile stretch of thin islands surrounded by crystal blue waters and lots of fish.

You can't talk about fishing in the Keys without mentioning its incredible flats and backcountry fishing. Bonefish take the center stage in the spring, but you can also catch lots of snook, tarpon, and permit throughout various times of the year. Deep sea fishing in the Keys is also a very gratifying experience. With spots like the Marathon Humps attracting a slew of hungry fish, you'll experience rod bending action with very little waiting between catches. You'll often find yourself having to take out the heavy tackle as you battle against some of Florida's hardest fighting fish, such as marlin, sailfish, and tuna. This famous archipelago has something for everyone, and once you get a taste, you'll be hooked instantly, wanting to come back for more. With so many charter options to choose from, you can have your trip catered based on your preferences and enjoy one of the greatest fishing states in the world.

Florida saltwater charters are licensed to cover all customers aboard. Floridians take good care of their fisheries, as they should, so you need to make sure you’re fishing within the law. If you’re going out on your own, you’ll need either a freshwater or a saltwater Florida fishing license, depending on where you’re going.

Going out with a saltwater fishing charter? Then you’re all set, your license is included in the price of your trip. It’s different if you’re fishing with a freshwater guide – you’ll still need to buy your own fishing license. Here’s a quick video about the types of licenses available.
<wistia-player media-id="orwuaw1dvv" aspect="1.7777777777777777">

Hi guys, I’m Mark,

and today we’ll be going over how to get a fishing license in the beautiful state of Florida. There are lots of questions on the internet about who needs a fishing license, whether you need one when you’re hopping on a charter boat, and what are some of the exceptions. So, I’ll try to address some of these questions so hopefully you spend less time looking for answers and more time fishing. Luckily, getting the right type of fishing license in Florida is super easy.

And since you can fish without a license on a charter boat or even on a licensed pier, Florida is probably one of the easiest states to plan a fishing trip in. Since Florida offers such a wide variety of fishing packages, it’s important to know which one is right for you.

The two main types of licenses are saltwater and freshwater licenses. Just some words of advice, if you’ll be fishing in brackish water or anywhere where you might be targeting a mixture of both freshwater and saltwater species, I recommend getting both types of licenses.

The last thing you want to do is hook a fish that you’re not covered to catch and get a fine because of that.

The good news for visitors coming to Florida is that all saltwater fishing charters cover licenses for everyone onboard, so you don’t have to worry about purchasing one on your own. However, if you choose to fish with a guide in freshwater, you will need to purchase your own license. You can fish for most species with a regular saltwater or freshwater fishing license.

However, there

are some species that require additional tags. These include Snook, Tarpon, and Spiny Lobster. Also, be aware of seasonality for certain species, such as Red Snapper in federal waters. These rules can change year-to-year, so just be sure to stay up-to-date with any local regulations and you should be good.

Long story short,

all non-residents over 16 and any resident aged between 16 and 65 will need to purchase a fishing license before heading out. Also, this is very important to know: anyone involved in any type of fishing activities also needs to purchase a fishing license. For example, if you’re helping your friend by baiting their hooks or setting up any of their gear, you will also need to purchase a fishing license. Again, as mentioned earlier, if you’re hopping on a saltwater charter you will not need to buy a fishing license.

You don’t need a license to fish from a licensed pier in Florida as well. Florida residents with severe disabilities can fish for free with a Florida Resident Disabled Person Hunting and Fishing License. Military personnel from Florida can fish for free if they’re visiting home for up to a month. Florida residents receiving benefits or food stamps from the government can do land-based saltwater fishing without a license.

Any Florida resident can get a free shoreline fishing license, which allows you to fish for saltwater species from land or from structures that are attached to land. If you are 65 and over, and are from out of state, you will still need a regular salt or freshwater fishing license. However, senior Florida residents can fish for free but must bring proof of age and address. Anyone who’s eligible to fish without a license should make sure to bring proof that they are qualified to do so in order to show to the Coast Guard.

For instance, children under 16 should bring proof of age with them at all times. If you’re caught fishing without a license and you’re eligible for one, you will have to pay the cost of the license plus an additional fine. The penalty starts usually at $50, so make sure all your paperwork is in order before you head out on the water. The easiest

way to purchase your Florida fishing license is online and you can do so at Gofloridaoutdoors.com

or by visiting the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s main website. You can also buy it over the phone. Just call the toll-free number 888-FISH-FLORIDA or 888-347-4356. They’re available at all registered retailers such as Walmart, tax collector’s offices, and registered bait and tackle shops across the state.

Annual fishing licenses in Florida are valid for 12 months from the date that they were issued. The expiration date will be printed on the license itself. Once it expires, you can renew your fishing license at any official retailer. If your fishing license is lost or stolen, you can purchase a replacement for only $2.

For the most part, your license is usually only valid in Florida but there are some interstate waters that border with Georgia where you can fish with your Florida license. These are St. Mary’s River and Lake Seminole.

Now that you have all the information you need, you can finally get out there and test out the waters of the Sunshine State!

For more information, be sure to check out our full blog article that goes into more detail about how to get a Florida Fishing License.
