On the contrary, they follow a strict season in <strong>state and federal waters in the Gulf<\/strong>. In 2024, the season was modified to only run for <strong>two weeks in September<\/strong>, and the same approach was applied to 2025. <\/p><p>The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) has yet to issue an executive order for the 2026 season, but if it&rsquo;s judging by the previous two years, the recreational Gag Grouper season in the Gulf state waters will most likely run again between <strong>September 1 and September 14.<\/strong><\/p><p>The availability window is much longer on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fisheries.noaa.gov\/bulletin\/noaa-fisheries-announces-93-day-2026-recreational-fishing-season-gag-south-atlantic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Atlantic side<\/a>, and the 2026 dates are out &ndash; the Gag Grouper season will last 93 days, from <strong>May 1<\/strong> to <strong>August 2<\/strong> in federal.<\/p><p>You can find Gags in the shallows and deeper waters, usually up to 60 feet down. They usually head for the depths when the temperatures rise, whereas cooler waters motivate them to come closer to the coast. However, the closer you are to the shore, the smaller the Black Groupers are, as juveniles usually swim inshore. The same goes for state waters in the Atlantic. However, the Black Grouper season in <strong>Atlantic state waters runs from May through December.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p><p>If you&#8217;re after bigger specimens, head offshore to spots with rocky bottoms, such as reefs and drop-off walls. Just don&#8217;t forget that the Black Grouper season in <strong>the Gulf&#8217;s federal waters is closed between February and March, <\/strong>and <strong>between January and April in the Atlantic.<\/strong> The famous &#8220;Edges&#8221; area is also closed from <strong>January 1<\/strong> to <strong>April 30<\/strong>.<\/p><h3 id=\"red-grouper-season-in-florida\">Red Grouper Season in Florida&nbsp;<\/h3><p>If you haven&#8217;t fished for Red Groupers before, it&#8217;s high time you tested your skills against these bottom-dwellers. Red Groupers are opportunistic feeders and ambush predators. They&#8217;ll aggressively snatch the prey before any other species can even notice it. And when hooked, they won&#8217;t go down without a fight. They&#8217;re available for recreational angling in the state waters of the Gulf <strong>year-round<\/strong>, while the federal season has a closure in February and March, and the &#8220;Edges&#8221; area is closed from January through April. On the Atlantic side, you can pursue Red Grouper <strong>from May through December.<\/strong><\/p><p>Red Groupers are known as &#8220;shallow-water Groupers,&#8221; meaning they frequent the inshore fisheries, as they feel most at home in depths of around 10 feet. To prevent that from happening, the authorities have introduced strict bag restrictions for Groupers. So, besides knowing when you&#8217;re allowed to fish for these prized fish, you must know how many you can actually keep.<\/p><p>Whether you&#8217;re angling in the Gulf or the Atlantic, you must respect the <strong>aggregate bag limit<\/strong>. The aggregate bag limit states how many different Groupers a person may possess and\/or harvest during a day. <\/p><p>On August 6, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fisheries.noaa.gov\/bulletin\/effective-immediately-increase-gulf-red-grouper-catch-limits\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NOAA Fisheries took an emergency action<\/a> to increase the quota for Red Grouper in the Gulf.
