Trout Fishing Season<\/h3>

New Jersey has a continuous stocking program that takes place every spring, summer, and winter, and encompasses over 200 waterways. Pair that up with its naturally reproducing Trout, and it comes as no surprise that the state boasts year-round<\/strong> angling opportunities for these freshwater beauties. <\/p>

The official Trout fishing season starts in spring and ends in spring of the following year. For example, the current season began on April 11, 2026,<\/strong> and will last until mid-March, 2027<\/strong>, when waters start closing for stocking. Sounds simple, doesn’t it? But it’s not…<\/p>

While the official season runs throughout the entire year, not all fisheries adhere to the same regulations. <\/p>

Stocking usually starts three weeks before the season’s opening,<\/strong> and all ponds, lakes, and streams being stocked are closed to fishing<\/strong> during this period. In other words, fishing is usually prohibited between mid-March, and the season opener for all Trout-stocked streams such as Hakihohake Creek, Lopatcong Creek, Pophandusing Creek, and the Raritan and Saddle Rivers.<\/p>

However, some bodies of water, such as the Holdover Trout Lakes, Lake Hopatcong, Mountain Lake, Lake Shenandoah, Lawrence Brook, Prospertown Lake, and Swartswood Lake, are exceptions to this rule<\/strong>. They don’t have any Trout fishing season closures and remain open during this period for catch and release.<\/p>

Speaking of catch-and-release fishing<\/strong>, there are numerous fisheries where you can fish for Trout year-round but you must immediately release them unharmed. Ken Lockwood Gorge and Flat Brook, for example, are designated “Catch-and-Release Areas,” meaning you cannot keep Trout from these waters.<\/p>

You should also be aware of “Boundary Waters” which are both catch-and-release and seasonal.<\/strong> That’s how the Delaware River is open for Trout fishing between April 18, 2025, and October 15, 2025. <\/strong>You can still fish outside this season, but Trout caught at other times has to be released instantly.<\/p>

Finally, you should be aware that the bag limit changes from June 1 to Dec 31<\/strong> to 2 combined Trout, reduced from 6 combined Trout you can keep during the spring season.<\/p>

Trout Bag Limits<\/h3>

The overall rule is that you should not possess more than 6 Trout<\/strong>. But the rules differ depending on the Trout species. And, as with seasons, bag regulations can vary based on the fishery, too. <\/p>

Hakihohake Creek and Lopatcong Creek, for example, are a little more nuanced than they first appear. As Wild Brown Trout Managed waters, they allow up to six Trout from Opening Day through May 31 and two Trout from June 1 through the end of the year. Brown Trout also come with extra protection here, so they need to measure at least 12 inches, and even on a six-fish day, no more than two of your keepers can be Browns. Beatty’s Brook and Hickory Run, meanwhile, are even more protective: you may keep no more than two Brown and\/or Rainbow Trout combined, while all Brook Trout must be released unharmed.<\/p>

The Delaware River, on the other hand, is one of the more generous Trout fisheries in the state, allowing anglers to keep up to five Trout per day during its season. Round Valley Reservoir in Hunterdon County plays by a different set of rules altogether: Brown and Rainbow Trout are open year-round there, but only two may be kept per day and each must meet the 15-inch minimum. <\/p>

Trout Conservation Areas are another story entirely. Some are limited to a single 15-inch keeper, while others shift between catch-and-release periods and short harvest windows, so they reward anglers who check the fine print before heading out.<\/p>

By now you should have realized that, while some widely accepted regulatory requirements exist, nothing is set in stone. The same goes for size restrictions. Generally speaking, your Trout catch should not be below the 9-inch <\/strong>mark. However, some areas have their own set of rules you must follow. <\/p>

Brown Trout taken from Hakihohake and Lopatcong Creeks must be at least 12 inches<\/strong> long to be considered a keeper. Meanwhile, Trout reeled in from any Trout Conservation Area cannot be smaller than 15 inches<\/strong>. At the same time, the Delaware River and some Wild Trout Streams, such as Hickory Run, do not impose any size limitations.<\/strong><\/p>

Again, the wisest thing to do is confirm ahead of time what rules and regulations<\/a> apply to the NJ body of water where you want to fish for Trout during its season.<\/p>
