Backcountry Flats Fishing

Captain John Skiffington of Backcountry Flats Fishing invites you to come and explore this special corner of angling paradise! Fishing out of Santa Rosa Beach, he welcomes you aboard to experience some of the finest flats fishing you will ever encounter, in an area surrounded by natural beauty.

Captain John’s 16’ Action Craft FlyFisher flats boat is perfectly suited to these shallow waters. It’s equipped with a PowerPole, Push Pole, custom casting platform, Lowrance HDS-7 Chart Plotter, GPS, Depth Sounder, and a live bait well. The boat has everything you need to fish the deep channels, passes, inlets, and back bays in the area.

This area is home to a variety of species who are just waiting to take your bait, whether you are fishing with live bait, artificial lures, or fly. You can either hone your fly fishing skills or use light tackle, light line spinning gear, or baitcasters. Target Redfish, Sea Trout, Black Drum, Jack Crevalle, and Tarpon.

Should you choose to fish with live bait, you could be using pinfish, finger mullet, live shrimp, blue crab, and pilchards. Take advantage of the captain’s large selection of artificials that includes jigs, soft plastics, crankbaits, spoons, and an array of saltwater flies. Please note that customers are liable for any damage to the equipment provided by the charter.

Whether you are an experienced fisherman angling for a trophy catch or a novice hoping to learn more about fishing, Capt. John will be delighted to share with you the sense of satisfaction that can be gained from spending a day aboard his boat in the crystal clear waters of Florida’s Emerald Coast.

Join Backcountry Flats Fishing and explore some of the most prolific shallow waters in the Florida area!

After a college degree and two tours of duty in Viet Nam for the US Army, John fell in love with Costa Rica’s world class sport fishing. His passion led to founding Sportfishing Quepos on the Pacific Coast with a fleet of seven boats. Returning to Southwest Florida after 38 years in Central America, John established Backcountry Flats Fishing guiding clients into the Everglades National Park targeting Tarpon, Snook, Redfish, Speckled Trout and Black Drum. He recently relocated to Florida’s Northwest Panhandle offering light tackle and fly rod enthusiasts flats fishing charters in the unique bayous, marshes, inlets and crystal clear white sand flats of Florida’s famed Emerald Coast. John is an active member in many organizations including: Florida Guide Association (FGA), Fly Fishers International (FFI), Bonefish Tarpon Trust (BTT), Coastal Conservation Association (CCA) and is a current member of Panhandle Fly Fishers, Fly Fishers of Northwest Florida and Naples Backcountry Fly Fishers
