Sail away from the idyllic white sandy shores of Puerto Plata aboard Buscapie Charters’ ‘My Fathers’, a well-equipped 29’ Luhrs. As you drive out to the fishing grounds you can admire the tropical coastline slowly shrink behind you as you stand on the boat’s flybridge, or enjoy the large deck space available on board.
Perhaps what makes Buscapie charters stand out from the competition is the captain’s attention to detail. Fishing is everything to him, meaning everything on board must be clean and in the very best working order. If something doesn’t work, it doesn’t come on the boat. High quality navigational electronics including a Furuno radar will help you target fish, and a live bait tank will keep your bait fresh. This powerful boat has two 315HP Yanmar engines, which give it a cruising speed of around 26 knots.
Buscapie charters tend to troll with 8 lines, believing this to be the optimum number to allow everyone to have a go without it getting too crowded. They tend to target Blue and White Marlins, Sailfish, Wahoo and Mahi-mahi, depending on the season and the conditions. The captain pays great attention to the tide tables and wind in order to get you to the best possible fishing spot.
Born in Italy, capt. Mattia first came to the Dominican Republic aged 11. He caught his first fish at 8 years old and hasn’t looked back since. As he grew up his life revolved around his family’s commercial fishing vessel, which he worked on during the day, studying for high school during the night.
This gave him the experience and knowledge of the area to run Buscapie Fishing Tours, a family business that has a passion for fishing and love for the sea at the core of its values. Even after so many years, he still gets excited about the opportunity to go out to sea and fish, an attitude that his customers find infectious.

Let me start out by saying that the boat was nice and crew (Capt. Alexander) accommodating, but there intentions may have not been. We have been on many charters before and right from the start this one seemed just not right. Now I know that when you go on a charter there is no guaranty that you will catch anything (or it wouldn’t be called fishing but catching instead), but on this one I think the crew knew that we were heading out on a very expensive boat ride ($700). If they had any integrity I think they would have canceled the trip. There were other cheaper options for the trip but I figured pay the extra money for the better service.
To start off the morning, we showed up at the marina only to find no activity .. fishing or otherwise, no boats going out or to be seen anywhere. We thought this was a bit strange, but to add to our concerns as we were pulling off the dock I noticed some colleagues of our captain shaking their heads and laughing like “really there going out today, just taking their money trip!” As we departed the marina we started to troll immediately – for the next 4 hours we trolled! We never saw one fish, as matter of fact we never even saw the bait after it was initially set up (not one bite). The seas were very rough (10’ to 20’ swells or more) it seemed like we were trolling very fast, we went pretty much strait out for 2 hours turned around and 2 hours back. Not much angler intellect or expertise from crew at all. I think the hotel busboy could have done better. We did get nauseated within 10 min of the trip and needed to do some chumming. Not a good way to start and not a fun way to spend the 3 ½ hours.
We never saw any other boats on the open water fishing or otherwise that day! That should tell you something!
I think the conditions were not great and instead of being honest about it or maybe try to re-schedule or just cancel. This company just goes no matter what, like I said expensive boat ride! I would rather them tell me that the conditions are awful, you’re not going to catch “Jack S*#T” so don’t waste your time!!
They do insist on money upfront and you get what you pay for 4 hours exactly, nothing extra. Most trips I been on if something is not working, you try something else! (NO angler intellect or expertise) Oh yes, they do offer you beer like every 15 min, just in case you can hold something down.
Overall, very disappointing trip! Waist of time and three newbies that will probably never go deep sea fishing again! Thank you Buscapie Charters: ‘My Father’ job well done!

We had nice weather, Boat was clean and ready for the charter. Crew was very attentive to the guest. They put us on fish quickly and served cold Beers while we waited for the next bite. This was a very well run operation and a good value for us. I will use this boat and crew on future charters.

Started off really well. Around midday the swells were getting bigger and there were three of us. I am about 250lbs so no light weight, well I got thrown from one side of the boat to the other like a rag doll. Bruises all over me but what a great time we had. Caught a lot of fish, captain was great, his helper was great, awesome trip, recommend to every one.
