Phoenix Charters - Zodie 1

34 Ara-Tai Rd
Auckland, New Zealand

Want to learn how to fish like a pro?

Phoenix Charters aren’t your regular old fishing charter where you’re given a rod and told to drop the line to the bottom. We pride ourselves on teaching novices and even regular fisho’s on the latest and even some of the old school techniques of fishing for Snapper, Kingfish, Kahawai, Trevally, Gurnard, John Dory’s and other species sometimes found in the gulf.

We cater for 8 - 12 fishing guests aboard with spare seats for non fishing guests. Due to the size of the covered fishing cockpit this provides more than enough room for each angler. This allows you to still be able to cast your rod without stepping on anyone else’s toes. Our fishing vessel Zodie 1 is a sturdy Tri-Hull design which will get you to the fishing quick and comfortably.

Don’t have your own rod? No problem you can borrow one of quality rod and reel combos, with brands like Shimano & Berkley. We have gear ready for all techniques incl straylining (our favourite), soft baiting, slow jigging and even live baiting. We can supply bait and will have Berley Bombs on hand should we need to entice the fish to bite (especially in Winter).

Zodie 1 has been lovingly restored to a high standard and features high quality Safety Equipment, above and beyond the Maritime requirements. It also features a walk in private flush toilet. We also have a BBQ for cooking a feast while at sea.

A trip out with Phoenix Charters will include our qualified commercial Skipper Mike and the owner of the vessel Brett as deckhand to help with baiting and demonstrating fishing techniques and coaching you with that once in a lifetime catch. We also don’t mind filleting your precious catch on the way home either.

About the Captain

Brett Smith
Auckland, New Zealand
Member since October 2014
Brett is an avid fisho who has been fishing since he was knee high to a grasshopper. He grew up in Whitianga on the Coromandel Peninsula where he helped his father run a successful boat hire company from the beach. Every opportunity he had, he would take one of the little 12 foot tinnies out and chase the workups out in the harbour. Brett has also been on dozens of trips out with his mate chasing Marlin and other game fish out of Whitianga, he has still yet to land one but he says he's so close he can feel it.

Not a fast boat, but generally well set up for fishing, but the overhead canopy was a little restrictive. Liked the individual little bait boards, but could have used a bigger one to fillet a fresh kawhai for bait. First 10kg of pillie bait we used was primo, but after that, they looked like they had been re-frozen 3 or 4 times. Quality rods & reel, mix of Ugly sticks & Shimano. Supplied set-ups were restricted to strayline, either 1 or 2 hooks, but dropper rigs would have been better for guys on the upstream side of the boat. Skipper gave good coaching on how to strayline. We only fished two spots, and when the bite went off, we all got pretty bored. Skipper pitched in to try to top up the catch by fishing himself, but sometimes didn’t put his rod down when guys needed new tackle tied on. He swore a lot, which didn’t worry most of us, but one of the ladies commented later. He also made disparaging comments about the same people losing terminal tackle all the time, which made them feel uncomfortable.  If that was a problem, he should have moved us onto a sandy area.

I highly recommend this captain. I have done many good fishing trips in New Zealand but this trip was very special and the best fishing trip until this moment. The equiments and boat were well equipped and the captain is basically outstanding.

Honestly, you don’t want to miss it.
