Everything about this experience completely exceeded my expectations. From start to finish, the day was something out of a movie. Beginning with trolling the coast for some Mahi Mahi (Dorado) to Wahoo and other good eating fish, it was a quick start with 4 Mahi Mahi varying in size.

The deckhands were some of the coolest, most experienced charter fishermen I have sailed with. So in tune with the scream on the reels, they were able to call fish without a breach from over 100 yards.

The captain “Rambo” did an amazing job with his 35 years of fishing experience.

He was able to get us to hotspots, reading the fish monitors and maneuvering the boat as need when hooked up. The food was very fresh and tasty. The deckhands provided soft drinks, beer, water and delicious fruit platters,  delicious sandwiches with avocado and bags of chips.

The most exciting part came in the afternoon. We had already hooked 6 Mahi Mahi and one snapper by that point. When all of a sudden, the deckhands literally called it out on the bite of the line….”pez vela” “pez vela”!!! We had landed a sailfish. Absolutely gorgeous fish. They handed over the line and after about 20 minutes, we were able to get a great video and experience of the fastest fish in the worlds ocean. Truly liberating experience to be a part of. Exhilarating.

Once we had returned to the marina, the deckhands allowed us to choose our fish we wanted to fillet. They bagged it and personally walked us over to Dos Chiles Restaurant where they fully prepared they fish for us on a platter with rice and beans. THE BEST FISH IVE HAD. Absolutely hands down.

I’ll start by saying the two deck hands worked EXTREMELY hard the entire trip. They were the shining diamond of the trip. There was a language barrier so we didn’t exchange but a few words but from the moment we left the dock until the moment we ended our trip they had 5 lines in the water at all times. There was a lot of sea weed and that made their jobs even more difficult, they had to continuously clear the lines from the sea weed and they stayed busy. They made fresh ceviche for my wife and I from one of the Dorado that we caught, it was amazing.

The downsides:
The ad for the trip says ‘jigging, bottom fishing, trolling, live bait, etc’… however, the only fishing we did was trolling for 8 hours… I told Juan Carlos (the owner) before the trip that we’d like to catch a variety of fish but I guess that wasn’t conveyed to the team. Now, IM HAPPY with all the dorado we caught, great eating, but it would have been nice to have some more options. It was really just trolling for 2 hours, then boom hit two or three fish and then trolling another two hours.. it was a very slow day. Overall we caught 7 dorado and one bonito tuna.

The biggest thing that bothered me:

At the end of the trip, the captain, who didn’t speak a word to us the entire trip, which is fine, he was very busy.. but he asked us if we’d like to keep ONE of the fish to take home to eat… I told him no, i would be taking them all. He continued to question me, and asked, ‘well how many?’ So my wife, who speaks Spanish, told him in Spanish we were going to take it all again… then he asked how many of us there were… I told him two… he said ‘that’s too much fish for two’… then he asked how long we were staying.. I told him another 4 days… he told me again ‘that’s too much fish to eat in 4 days’.. I told him we were going to freeze them and fly home with them.. then he continued to tell me that he has customers over the last five years that can’t fly with the fish and have it taken from them etc etc.. this went on for 20 minutes and just made me very uncomfortable asking to keep my fish. This left a bitter taste in my mouth. I expressed my concern to the owner and he told me it was just the concern of prior clients getting their fish taken.. and that’s fine I understand, I just felt pushed hard to leave my fish.

And we froze the fish and put it in a cooler and had no trouble flying from Cancun to the USA. Easiest thing ever!!!

Had a great trip on the Catch Later with Captain Umo and his crew.  We started out trolling but it was a bit slow, only caught a barracuda and a couple of bonito.  The crew suggested switching to bottom fishing, and the bonanza started.  Caught ~ 17 keepers in total, including a huge yellowtail snapper, and a similarly sized dog snapper, with a nice jack fish to close out the day.

Captain Umo and the crew were competent, friendly, and kept the fish on the line all day.  Will choose them for my next trip.

They were very good at handling everything, and put me on many fish.  I was happy to catch so many.  Wonderful time.  I’ll be back soon

Booked an 8 hour trip for wife/I and fishing was so good I actually cut the day short due to being warn out(something I never do).  Caught multiple sailfish and Mahi Mahi in first couple hours, than went snorkeling while crew prepared us ceviche and guacamole- fantastic experience.
