In business since 2004, Puerto Rico Magic Tarpon Charters is one of the largest light tackle operators in the San Juan area. Conveniently located near the La Torrecilla and San José Lagoons, the company offers some of the best Tarpon fishing you can find. They operate in an area that is not only inhabited by large numbers of Tarpon and Snook, but is also surrounded by stunning wildlife and nature. The calm waters of the lagoon make seasickness unlikely and the area is easily accessible by car.

The charter company operates a fleet of 5 light tackle inshore fishing boats, amongst which is the 22 foot Pathfinder. This boat is perfect for light tackle fishing in the area: it is equipped with comfortable seating and offers a dry and comfortable ride through the lagoons. Equipped with a Garmin Fishfinder, two livewells and plenty of storage, the boat is also furnished with the full range of USCG required safety equipment.

Puerto Rico is famous for its Tarpon fishing with good reason: the Silver King can be found in the lagoons all year round and there is virtually no off season. Other fish that might be found in the lagoons include Snook, Jacks, Lady Fish, small Barracuda and some Snapper. Puerto Rico Magic Tarpon tend to use live bait, which is usually caught as part of the trip and can include Threadfin Herring, Anchovies and Sand Perch. They also use a variety of artificial lures, and make their own flies for fly fishing. Most of their light tackle is Shimano and Penn, while Scott, Sage and Orvis rods are used for fly fishing.

Brothers Karim and Armando Chaar operate Puerto Rico Magic Tarpon fishing charters. They have both been fishing the local lagoons since they were children and have since then been featured on numerous TV shows on ESPN2, Sunsports TV and Worldwide Fishing Network. They focus on providing a professional and courteous service using high quality, well-maintained fishing gear on clean and well-equipped boats.

Capt. Randy was ready and raring to go when we arrived at the marina. We just had to step on the boat and we were off.
He got us on the fish quickly. Four tarpon landed and another four hooked. The guy knows what he is doing, but is humble enough to acknowledge that no guide has all the answers on where the fish may be and how they may behave on any given day.
Seeing my 71-year-old dad catch his first tarpon after a lifetime on the water was priceless. Magic Tarpon and Capt. Randy made that happen and for that I am grateful.
The captain seemed genuinely stoked for us. He is very professional but was more than happy to share his insight into the fishery and the fish. That conversation eventually moved into surfing, the island economy and bucket-list trips across the globe. Good stuff.
My dad, a longtime fisherman, remarked on the good quality of the rods and reels and the good condition of the boat. Something I wouldn’t have noticed.
We made a few drifts in spots that looked promising. The captain impressed us with his willingness to move on in search of the fish. When he apparently found a honey hole we were pleased with his patience as we worked a very fruitful stretch of water. Eight hooked and four landed. Couldn’t be happier.
My dad and I I talked about doing this for nearly 20 years. My suggestion is don’t wait that long. And don’t hesitate about picking Magic Tarpon. Good odds with them. We will go again and hope that Capt. Randy is on the job.
