Captain Daniel McCarthy owns and operates Moana III, a 47ft long luxury sportfisher powered by twin Cummins engines (660HP each), with an average cruising speed of 25 knots. The boat is outfitted with a wide range of quality navigational electronics and marine technology, including Furuno 1100L Depth Sounder and Fishfinder with twin 2kw transducers, Wesmar 110khz 360” scanning Sonar as well as a Furuno Nav Net VX2 Chart Plotter. Moana III started offering fishing trips back in 2006, specializing in fishing for the famous Cairns’ Marlin, while also providing light tackle and reef fishing expeditions to the Great Barrier Reef and beyond.
The boat is fully air-conditioned and outfitted with two showers and two separate toilets. On-board facilities include a private stateroom with ensuite and TV/DVD, a convection microwave oven and cook-top, 2 refrigerators and 3 freezers, as well as a desalinator. For overnight trips, Moana comes equipped with 4 single, 1 extra double and 2 crew bunks. It has been surveyed to accommodate up to 6 anglers per trip.
Capt. McCarthy has been a Cairns local for over 30 years, skippering a variety of marlin and game fishing vessels since the age of 21. Over the years, he’s garnered an intimate knowledge of the profuse waterways surrounding Cairns, Cape York, Coral Sea and New Guinea, and is happy to share his findings with all of his charter guests. The Moana team is no stranger to numerous fishing achievements and recognitions either, including several prized tournaments and many 900lbs+ grander Marlins.
All the appropriate fishing gear for your party is provided by the Moana crew; in particular, the team utilizes a full set of custom-built Laurie Casey rods mounted onto Penn International and Shimano Reels. Snacks, lunch as well as drinks are all parts of the standard fishing charter, as is the cleaning and filleting of your catch following the trip.
