Derrick Burgos has been exploring and fishing the waterways of Florida virtually his entire life. His passion for fishing the canals and ditches of Miami developed when he was very young, and was introduced to kayak fishing after he moved to Tampa as a teenager. This brought his passion for fishing to a whole new level.

Now Derrick splits his time between being a professional tournament angler and a guide for kayak fishing charters. So far he has claimed eight titles and has received top three placings over 10 times, including in the Kayak Fishing Classics, Battle for Bella, Stinky Joes Trout Match, Hardcore Challenge and several others.

Derrick is an active participant in the fishing community, and regularly shares his experiences through blogs and published articles (he has written for the Kayak Fishing Magazine, Inshore/Offshore Magazine, Salty Shores and many more). He also gives seminars. Derrick is a member of several kayak fishing organizations, including the Space Coast Kayak Anglers, the Hadcore Kayak Anglers, and the CCA. He recently worked as a coordinator for a brand new project, the Sweetwater Kayaks 2014 Kayak Fishing Event Series.

Derrick started Phatfish Kayak Charters over three years ago. His customers benefit from his appreciation and understanding of the game fish of Florida, as well as its other wildlife, tides and weather patterns. He’s known as one of the best kayak fishing guides in the Tampa Bay area.

Derrick employs a variety of fishing techniques, including sight fishing, flats fishing, fly fishing and fishing from the shore. He specializes in fishing for West Florida’s most popular inshore game fish, such as Snook, Redfish, Sea Trout, Jack Crevalle, Grouper and more.

The trip started off with an on land review of the area from Maps.  During the review, Derick pointed out and explained why certain areas had the best opportunity to hold fish.  We also went over lure selection.

He was spot on.  We had a good time bringing the fish to the yak.  Derick is basic enough for the first time angler, while possessing the knowledge to help fine tune, a seasoned veteran of the sport.  I’d give him 10 out of 10 stars.

Excellent! Derrick was very professional and showed much concern for his me and my buddy. He put us on all the fish! Cobia, snook, reds, trout. It couldn’t have gone any better. The one thing that stuck out to me is that he understood gear was to be used and if it broke, no worries. Obviously we weren’t trying to break anything but my buddy hooked into a monster red. He wasn’t use to fishing reds and the red took off and my buddy jerked back and gave him no room to run and unfortunately his rod tip snapped. Totally my buddies fault but Derrick didn’t show any concern. He whipped out another rod and we kept on fishing. No worries. If you’re looking for some amazing kayak fishing, don’t hesitate to check out Phatfish. You WON’T be disappointed.

I have fished now with Derick multiple times and he puts you on fish.  I fish only artificials so it was great to be with someone so knowledgeable on both live bait and artificials. Plus he really knows the area and enjoyed learning about the wading birds and the habitat. Derick is just a low key guy nice and safety conscious too which is important in a kayak. So in summary, yes, I would for sure fish with Derick again and recomend which I don’t do often.
