Operating out of Hatteras, North Carolina, Reliance Fishing Charters specializes in premier professionally guided fishing trips. Captain John Canning grew up in New Jersey but then moved to Hatteras in 1993 in order to pursue his boating and fishing dreams. He bought his first boat in 1997 and kept upgrading to bigger and better till this day.
His current boat is the “Reliance,” a 51’ custom Carolina Sport Fisherman offshore sportfishing vessel. It comes powered by an impressive 1,150 HP Caterpillar engine and can take up to 6 anglers of all ages and experience levels. Fully overhauled in 2018, it features the latest and the best in marine electronics and safety gear, outriggers, downriggers, 3 fighting chairs, a livewell, and ice-boxes. It also boasts a private restroom and a shower, a multimedia system, and AC.
Captain John is as skilled behind the rod as he is behind the helm. He always asks the customers what they want to do and gives them info on what’s biting depending on the season. The captain usually stays inshore on his half day trips and goes mostly for Spanish Mackerel and Bluefish.
On full day trips, he’ll take you 20–40 miles offshore where you’ll get to focus on trolling or bottom fishing. You’ll be going after Mahi, Wahoo, Tuna, and Billfish when trolling and targeting Triggerfish, Snapper, and Grouper when bottom fishing. Up to 6 anglers can angle at the same when bottom fishing and up to 3 when trolling.
There’s no minimum age but kids under 5 years are not recommended on full day trips. The charter will cover top-notch custom rods paired with Penn and Shimano reels, as well as lures and licenses. Bring your own gear if you want to focus on fly fishing. You’re also welcome to bring a cooler with any food/drinks of your choosing. And what about fish cleaning? There’s a cleaning station at the dock where you can get your catch cleaned for only 50¢ a pound.
Reliance Fishing Charters will take care of everything else!
