Blackout Sportsfishing Charters

Northern Beaches Cairns
Cairns QL, Australia

Blackout Sportfishing Charters is owned and operated by Captain Kerry Bailey, a veteran local guide whose expertise in the fishing business spans a number of years and several charter companies. After gathering a wealth of knowledge and understanding about both the area’s inshore river system and various offshore reef hotspots, Kerry decided it was time to venture out on his own, and start showing his own guests exactly what he’s learned about the prolific Cairns waterways over the years.

Capt. Bailey operates a 23ft center console Badjcraft Custom Aluminium, powered by a single 140HP 4-stroke Suzuki engine, which can accommodate up to 3 fishermen per charter. The boat features a t-top for shade and comes outfitted with a conventional range of navigational utilities, including a radio, fishfinder, as well as 2 GPS’s - Garmin and Furuno, respectively.

As for on-board tackle, the Badjcraft is outfitted with a variety of rod and reel combos, from several popular fishing brands including Shimano, Daiwa and Fin-nor. Both live and artificial bait is supplied and can be used during the trip; although specific live bait may depend on the season and other factors, Capt. Bailey tends to prefer live sardines over most other alternatives.

Kerry specializes in both river and estuary fishing in and around Cairns, implementing a mixture of different fishing methods and techniques, such as deepwater bait fishing, jigging, trolling for pelagics, wreck bumper barring, lure casting, live baiting and many others depending on your personal preference. Typical species targeted on the reefs include some delicious table fish such as Red Emperor, Coral Trout, Fingermark and Sweet-lip, as well as light tackle warriors like Spanish Mackerel, Sailfish, Cobia and GT. Estuary fishing mainly focuses on the notorious Barramundi, as well as Queenfish, Mangrove Jack, Trevally and others.

My wife and I booked a whole day reef fishing trip. The disappointment was we spent half the time trying to net bait fish. I would had hoped that we would have had already bait fish to go fishing and not have to catch them too. As it was, we did not net any bait fish, so finely we went out to the reef with frozen bait. We did manage to caught some fish but nothing to take home.

I booked for two days and found the comms in advance of and after the trip to be excellent. The skipper was very knowledgeable and engaging and the boat very well appointed. Despite conditions that were not ideal Kerry worked tirelessly to put us on fish and we took advantage of the chances that came our way. Would recommend and will book again. Great trip.
