The recent cold front and windy conditions have made fishing sporty recently. We were lucky to catch a break in the weather and were able to get out on the flats for some fantastic inshore fishing. With the east side of the Harbor having little water during negative tides, focus your fishing near the outside of the bar. Knowing the area well will prevent you from getting stuck. Google earth is a great tool for mapping out new areas to explore. Hiding from the wind is a great option, as our area has vast canal system that is home to some great catches. Redfish, snook, trout and cobia have been moving along the deeper edges of the bar. This week we used a lot of artificial bait -- both lures and soft plastics. We are using a new bait dip called "super shrimp gel dip" by Aquatic Nutrition. It adds a scent to your bait that really gets fish biting. We've tried it on a number of lures and even cut bait with success. Reapplying every 5 casts or so, it really helped the bite pick up and get going during a slow cool morning. Bait is moving into the harbor. Look for schools of threadfins schooling in deeper water or chum on the flats. Pinfish, white bait and threadfins are making their way inshore, making for a happy fishermen and a full live well. These baits work best on a 3/0 circle hook with a simple loop knot. This gives your live bait free range of motion, looking appetizing to a larger fish swimming past.
