Charter fishing on Wellington’s south-west coast on board Swiftsure. Owned and skippered by Rolfe Everson for the past 10 years.

We have a wealth of knowledge concerning fishing and diving, with many years of combined service around this region.
When I am not charter fishing, I am commercial fishing and when I have a day off, out goes the kontiki.

We generally fish on the south-west coast but depending on the conditions we will go elsewhere to ensure that we can provide the best opportunities to catch the targeted favoured species of Groper, tarakihi, snapper and blue cod along side the fish that never fail to excite such as john dory, kahawai, trumpeter etc.

We offer half day and full day charters and evening trips. On all our full day trips we offer food, bait filleting and fishing advice. All trips are inclusive of the tackle and rod hire so all you have to do is get on the boat and go. There is no add-on costs with our operation.

Swiftsure is a 14m ex tuna long liner. Built in Picton specifically for the Cook Strait conditions of Wellington. Swiftsure has been converted to cater for charter fishing and can fish comfortably 12 fisher people. Swiftsure is in full survey for both charter and commercial fishing.

Weather wise couldn’t have asked for a better day. Our family of five only managed one legal blue cod not enough for a feed. Very few bites during the morning.
On checking with friends who fished the following day on another charter who caught their quota within a couple of hours wondered if the squid bait we had at our disposal contributed.
My daughter who’s idea is was to take her dad out for a birthday gift was upset the day did not bring more. But I suppose that is fishing.

Hi Karen, I was gutted for you and your family on the day. In briefing you guys at the beginning regarding the safety of the boat procedures I warned you about the luck involved with half day fishing. I made a call on where to go and what we would fish for, as it turned out the fish weren’t interested in us. I tried everything to get them to bite but nothing. The squid bait used was out of a fish shop that was sold for human consumption. (I have fried it and eaten it myself). The fishing gear we used was as good as brand new. Its fishing, sure if we had gone to another place we may have done better, but that was the day.
My offer I made to you still stands if you want to take it up.

Although some family members managed to get sick on this trip, the overall experience was great! It was meant to celebrate my fathers birthday and he thoroughly enjoyed it! He was very impressed by the captain and crew and was very pleased with the treatment they received. Thank very much Rolfe for being so great!

Had a great day out fishing. Only drawback was the high number of tangles. I guess with 12 people fishing in a confined area and high currents this is inevitable.

The bigger boat was not able to move locations so easily as smaller boats I have been on and not up for chasing shoals of fish feeding on the sea surface. It was probably a lot more comfortable than a small boat though when the weather turned rough in the afternoon.

Thanks for the comments Graham, yes I remember that charter. We caught a few fish, at one point I parked beside a reef and the front of the boat were catching fish but the back were not. A young fellow about 13 years old was having the time of his life pulling up good size fish while his parents down the back were not. Tangles are frustrating and can occur through no ones fault, sometimes fisher people don’t keep their lines tight or a fish decides to drag the lines together, but I guess that is all a part of learning how to fish though. We always have a couple of extra rods ready to go when some one breaks their gear so they don’t have to wait around for repair. One of the draw backs to fishing in the Cook Strait is the current, we simply can’t avoid it. We didn’t chase fish on the top because at this time of year they are eating krill so they only mouth the water and aren’t interested in lures or baits. Later on they will alter their feeding and chase anything that moves. It did turn a little choppy in the afternoon but in a reasonable sized boat you don’t get thrown around as much. Fishing is what it is, the mystery of what you catch and how to catch it will always lure me back to the sea. I hope you enjoy Machu Picchu when you get there. Catch you again. In the mean time, tight lines.
