Captain Wilkin started working on saltwater trips in the Panhandle in 2012, when he supervised diving trips. In 2013 he got his captain's license and started running his own business. As he had been saltwater fishing ever since childhood, it made sense for Captain Wilkin to follow his passion and run his own fishing charter guide service. Thus, Reef Donkey Charters was born, and now Wilkin is overjoyed to call his passion his profession.

We booked this trip well in advance of the scheduled Tuesday, July 10, 2018 -8am appointment.  I sent a text and email to Capt. Wilkin, but got no response until I contacted him from the Cape Monday, July 9 about the meeting location and details for the next morning.  He told me in that call at noon Monday that he would call me back that evening to confirm details/location for the next morning.  When I had not heard from him by 9pm, I called him. He said ‘for some reason’ he thought I was booked for Wednesday, July 11 and apparently there was a double booking, asking me to move to Wednesday.  I was fortunately able to make the changes to our other excursions to accommodate the error (either caused by booking.com or Capt. Wilkin).
We were at the boat ramp at the the new scheduled time 8am Wednesday, July 11.  Capt. Wilkin texted me to say he was running late.  He showed at 8:45am, we were on the water at 9:10am.
We had a good trip, brought in 2 king mackerels, and our limit of 4 red snappers. We went out about 9 nautical miles and returned to the ramp at 12pm. We went to Capt. Wilkin’s home, two blocks from the boat ramp, for him to clean our catch.
This was our first experience trolling for fish. Our previous trip was more in/around the bay from the state park dock where we baited our own rods, throwing in our lines to catch our fish —a far more ‘hands on’ experience. Capt. Wilkin bailed and trolled with left handed reels, which made it difficult for us to reel in a bite because we are both right-handed.  On previous outings, we were asked our preference - left or right changed reels.
Capt. Wilkin turned up his radio to country music which was fine with my grandson, although I would have preferred conversation and perhaps him sharing his knowledge of the bay and fishing with us.
Even given the scheduling/change issue, the tardiness and the left-handed reel issue, we brought in a good catch with Capt. Wilkin.  We would gladly go out with him again if these issues could be addressed. He was very pleasant and kind to us and we will have a good fish fry thanks to his efforts.

Tough day;  ocean was rough and fish weren’t bitting.  Wilken tried his best but no luck catching anything.

I would recommed going in morning during the summer.

I also didn’t charge anything for the trip cause it was a bust your deposit will be coming back to you. And we only fished for 2 an ahalf hours.
