JLS Light Tackle Guide Service LLC

From casting a top water plug in the shallows to blitzing fish in open water, a day on the water with JLS Light Tackle charters is always exciting. Captain Ron has over 30 years of fishing experience in both fresh and saltwater fishing.

While he normally launches from Rock Hall, Kent Island, or Sandy Point, his boat never sits in a slip, forced to fish one specific area. Instead, he prefers to trailer as the fish move as well as to target the different species that migrate in and out of the Chesapeake.

Capt. Ron prides himself on running a clean and well-maintained boat. His 21’ Seahunt boat is sized to handle the Chesapeake while also allowing you to get in skinny water when the fish are shallow.

Being in the industry allows the captain to work with several manufacturers to ensure he always has the best tackle and gear on the boat. He also owns and operates the largest independent light tackle saltwater fishing rod company on the east coast, JLS Rods LLC.

When he’s not on the water fishing or guiding, he’s designing, building, and engineering fishing equipment for other anglers. If you’ve ever visited any of the area tackle shops, you’ve likely seen his products as JLS has become a staple name on the Chesapeake. Simply put, fishing is what he does!

Capt. Ron welcomes anyone from the beginner to the advanced angler wanting to experience the area’s finest sport fishing. He’ll provide all necessary licenses and tackle and the time you book with him is the time you will get on the water. There’s no bringing you back to the dock after you have a limit. You will pursue other species or catch and release.

The captain puts emphasis on being outdoors and experiencing a total fishing experience, not just bringing something home in a cooler. He’s also dedicated to conservation, working to restore and enhance the Chesapeake as he feels it’s important to give back more than he takes.

With such an expert at your side, all that’s left is to pick a date and book a trip!

I’ve fished since I was in elementary school. I grew up Bass fishing lakes and rivers. In my early 20’s I fished a lot Bass tournaments for both Small and Largemouth Bass, winning several of them. About 12 years ago, bored with freshwater fishing, I made a blind leap in to Light tackle saltwater. I quickly fell in love with saltwater fishing, being impressed with how hard they fight and vigorously they feed in the right conditions. About 6 years ago, I saw a need for fishing rods designed just for light tackle fishing in saltwater. I started a rod company that quickly grew. Our rods can be found in several popular stores in the area. Today, we are the largest independent light tackle rod company on the east coast. Over the years fishing with other Chesapeake anglers, our rod customers and friends from out of town it was often mentioned I should guide. Now I enjoy showing others what drew me to salt water.

Ladies fishing Day
Ladies fishing Day
October 10, 2021
It was another warm week here in Maryland for this time of year and the bay water temp remained in the mid to low 70’s. With the recent rain, wind and lower day time and night temps I expect the next two weeks to make for even better fall fishing especially once the water drops in to the 60’s. I took a group of four young ladies fishing this past Saturday as they had entered a local charity fishing tournament. The conditions were horrible with 10-20 mph winds. I asked the ladies to cancel but they insisted on going. We caught fish all through the day on jerk baits and soft plastic jigs. Their better fish came on shallow water structure. We also found a rather large school of fish under birds in deeper water. Im also happy to report the ladies placed second in the womens division of their tournament. I have one weekend left with openings in October and a few weekday spots left as well. If you’re wanting to fish, dont wait to book as fall fishing is very good right now and my remaining October dates will go fast. Tight lines and good fishing. Captain Ron
Fall fishing!
Fall fishing!
September 28, 2021
We are running trips several days a week currently. Fall fishing above the Bay Bridge is a fine as it gets and will stay that way through the end of October and beginning of November. Early mornings we are seeing a great top water bite until the sun gets up unless the tide is blown out. Once the top water bite slows down we are heading out to open water near ledges and drop offs and finding plenty of Striped Bass pushing bait up to the surface with a lot of Birds. Casting soft plastic jigs, jerk baits and top water plugs the action has been non stop. This last week we had fish up to 28” on our custom Light tackle rods and Diawa reels. As a tip if you can book with us on a week day as usually we can set up on fish and have them to ourselves, thats not to say weekend trip do not offer good fishing as well. Lets go fishing!
