Keiki was awesome. Very passionate about diving, spear fishing & conservation. He took over an hour to go over breathing techniques, water safety, how to work in buddy/pairs, the showed us safety with the spear guns.

We went out & learned about how to hold our breath, use of ways to depressive your ears and the. Practiced shooting the spear gun.  We snorkeled for about 2 hours and got 1 fish but head a great time and learned a lot.

My 14 year old son and I had a blast spearfishing with Keoki! We did not catch anything, but had shots at several fish each. I’m pretty sure my son hit fish, but the bolt did not pierce due to the angle I think.
The first hour is a lesson in spearfishing, breath holding and safety done near the dive shop. I felt very safe at all times. The guide was in charge of the spear gun at all times except when one of the group was ready to shoot.
Once in the water, Keoki made sure we were all safe and comfortable and was always checking up on us.
We ended up going to Mala ramp which is a fishing ramp & pier, but part of it has collapsed and the concrete rubble has added structure to the reef and we saw tons of sea life - many turtles, thousands of fish, several sharks (the largest around 5 feet long) and even an octopus! Visibility was amazingly clear and you could see over 100’ away.
The longer you can hold your breath and equalize pressure easily will help make this experience better. I had trouble with equalizing pressure and going down deeper was difficult and my shots ended up being short of the target.

If you want to plan ahead - watch videos on free diving and breath techniques to hold your breath longer. If you can practice free diving safely and get down to 30’ and stay there for 10 seconds or longer will make this experience even better.

Even though I did not get any fish and had trouble with my ears, I still had an amazing time and would do it again! It’s a unique experience and a great way to spend the day with my son.
