Captain Al was great and so was his mate. I’ve been twice before so I had something to compare this trip to. Nice boat, we went out and the crew caught real bait…..nothing store bought here. Other charters in the same place as us didn’t hookem like we did because their bait wasn’t the real deal. First half day trip for me and my 7yr old son had a blast. We fished for King mackerel and caught our limit. The last catch was a sail fish, extremely rare to hook and this was my second one from the Atlantic. Great job captain!

Captain Al and Jessie were very professional and put us on the fish. Whitin 3 minutes of setting out our hooks we had two ” jacks” hooked. They were very patient and helpful with our group including three teens on board. Everything went well and I would highly recommend captain Al and his crew.

Four of us (two adults, two children) went out with Captain Al on a four hour charter on the river at St. Augustine. We decided against the trip to the reefs outside since we had the two kids ages 11 and 9. Well, the trip started out well when we anchored near an abandoned dock. Caught a large flounder and a couple of other trash fish. Problem is that when we didn’t get any bites for 45 minutes, we continued to stay at the same spot for over 1 1/2 hours. Then moved to a spot on Hospital Creek near the Mission. Caught one nice redfish and a few mangrove snappers, plus several pinfish ( Captain Al kept insisting that we call them sailors choice as if that would make everything better) and one unusual fish which Al called a rabbit fish (or puffer). Al told us that the puffer fish was a good eating fish. Ok. We stayed at this second spot until it was time to pack up for the day. Two spots in four hours! That’s ridiculous! The young second mate seemed as if this was his first trip out with Al. He worked hard, and Al pushed him hard by ordering him around the whole trip. The website said that this was a “child friendly” charter, but the boys were not treated well. Seemed as if Al felt they were in the way instead of assisting them. Constantly telling them that they weren’t catching fish because they weren’t paying attention. Both boys did catch several pinfish. Great huh? When we got back to the marina old Al seemed to be in a real hurry to leave. First order of business was, of course, to collect the balance of the fee. Total trip was $375 plus tip. Al left quickly and had the first mate clean the fish. He did a terrible job of this. Needs to learn how to fillet a fish. Basically, he filleted all of the fish except the flounder but most were completely full of bones, and I had to scale all of the fish fillets myself later!!!? I had asked that they not fillet the flounder but to scale and gut it. He partially gutted the flounder and cut the head off. Did not scale it at all, and because he did not have a plastic bag large enough to hold the flounder, he cut a large section off of the end and threw it away. Just a terrible job of cleaning the fish! Another man came along while he was cleaning the fish and saw the puffer (rabbit) fish. He told us that he had heard that this fish was toxic and that he would not eat it. So much for Captain Al’s advice. We told the first mate/fish cleaner that we didn’t want the fish. Later we researched the puffer and, sure enough, it is a toxic fish with strong recommendation to avoid ever eating it! I really wonder how Al stays in business doing business this way. Only two fishing spots in four hours, not “child friendly”, and just a lazy attitude toward the whole trip which was rather expensive. Of course we will never recommend Channel Master Sport Fishing to anyone planning a trip out of St. Augustine - either inside or reef fishing. Live and learn folks!
