Big Fish Tours: “La Chata”
, Nicaragua - Show map
Big Fish Tours are pioneers in sportfishing charters on the Pacific coast of Nicaragua. Their mission is to develop sportfishing in the area, educating people on the extremely rich fishing opportunities that exist here. They target the almost untouched yet exceptional local Marlin fishery aboard a luxurious vessel using state of the art fishing gear.
“La Chata” is a 36 foot Hatteras that is fully equipped with an air conditioned cabin, flybridge and ‘head’ for your personal comfort. She is supplied with up to date electronics, with a GPS, sonar, radar and fishfinder to put you on to fish, using a trolling spread made up of Lee outriggers and Cannon downriggers. Unlike many other boats in the area, La Chata has been built specifically for deep sea fishing, providing a safer and more stable platform to fish on than the many local ‘pangas’ (skiffs) that claim to offer a cheaper sportfishing experience. With a fighting chair on board as well as custom-built Penn 30, 50 and 80 class rods and reels, this boat will put you in good stead to reel in a Marlin or Sailfish, conditions allowing. The two 350 HP Caterpillar engines allow you to power out to sea and fish the really deep grounds other charters can’t reach.
While San Juan Del Sur is lucky to enjoy excellent fishing all year round, its high season runs from May to October. This time of year sees big Blue, Black and Striped Marlin, Sailfish, Yellowfin Tuna and plenty of Mahi Mahi swimming in the local waters. The highly experienced crew uses their long range radar to find and locate bird activity, while baiting with their new Garmin CHIRP sonar to increase the chances of finding and catching the variety of game fish available. It’s not all about the deep sea fishing though - if you’re keen to try your hand at catching a Rooster Fish, Jack Crevalle or Grouper there are plenty of nearshore opportunities as well.
