Pine Island Backwater Charters

3461 Manatee Drive
St. James City FL, United States

Located on a beautiful island oasis on the west coast of Florida, PIne Island Backwater Charters give you the chance to get close and personal to a variety of inshore game fish as well as Dolphins, Manatees, Ospreys, Eagles and many other species that call the area’s seas and skies their home. Capt. Pete Gulbrandsen will guide you through the natural treasures of Pine Island and the surrounding area while targeting desirable inshore game fish such as Tarpon, Redfish, Snook and Trout.

Capt. Pete runs an 18 foot East Cape Fury flats skiff that has been designed specifically for getting into the shallowest of waters. Able to float in just six inches of water, this will allow you to explore the best of the backcountry’s meandering creeks and the shallow flats and mangroves where few other boats ever go. The Fury poles extremely quietly, providing the ideal platform for chasing spooky Redfish and other species. At the same time, its hull design and built in spray rails allow anglers to travel out off the beaches of Sanibel, Captiva, and Cayo Costa to target Tarpon, Snook and False Albacore as they migrate along the coastline in the summer and fall. Capt. Pete also owns two fishing kayaks, and he will occasionally strap one to the back of the Fury to enable him to travel into even narrower and skinnier areas than he could access in his skiff. Let him know at the time of booking if you’re interested in this.

Capt. Pete usually fishes with flies or artificial bait on light tackle for Tarpon, Snook, Redfish and Trout. He provides premium quality fishing gear from St Croix, Century, TFO, Cheeky, Shimano, Zeebas and Okuma, as well as artificial lures from Zman, Hogy, Sluggo, Doa, Mirrolure and Heddon. He finds early morning fishing before the sunrise particularly rewarding but will tailor his trips and hours to what works best for you. Pete is an advocate of CPR (Catch, Photo, Release) but will clean and fillet your catch for you if you would like to take it home to eat.

Had a blast with Capt. Pete! This guy is very knowledgeable and knows how to put people on that trophy fish! We caught 2 Baby tarpon and jumped another. On top of that we had 3 bigger tarpon bite and actually hooked into one and fought it for a good amount of time and the line spooled out after a HUGE run! Other than that he put us on snook and had a blast catching those bad boys! If you want to get put on that fish on a life time give this guy a call!

After 40 plus years in the guide biz in the north east, I found a guide that fishes with the same desire to guide his clients on fish as I did but, with the same enthusiasm as the first time you came tight on a giant snook or tarpon on a fly you tied the night before your trip! Great knowledge of the local waters. Give him a call when you want to work for some guality fish! Capt. Al Zlata (ret)

With his extensive knowledge of local waters, Pete provided me with an excellent opportunity to fish the creeks and backwaters not usually explored by other local guides. Pete knew where and when to go and how to approach the snook once we spotted them. He kept a nicely balanced competive/laid back attitude and, unlike some guides, offered constructive instruction in cases where he put me onto fish and I didn’t deliver with accurate and timely casts. I learned more in one day with Pete than from months of fishing on my own. I highly recommend fishing with Pete.
