Solmar VI Sportfishing- 31 ft Boat

Paseo El Pescador
Cabo San Lucas BS, Mexico

Solmar VI Sportfishing Fleet is one of the largest and most respected charter companies in Cabo San Lucas. They have been offering fishing charters in the area since 2004 and own a variety of boats that can cater for all your angling needs.

Their 31 ft boat ‘Solmar VI’ was recently refreshed in 2015. This is one of the most popular boats in their fleet and has been sailing the waters of Cabo San Lucas for over 10 years. The boat is equipped with two fighting chairs, a live bait tank and navigational electronics to help you target a trophy fish. Plenty of seating is available both in the cabin and on deck, and an enclosed restroom caters for the comfort of all on board. If you would like to include snorkeling in your trip, all the appropriate gear can be supplied on board upon request.

Solmar VI Sportfishing mainly targets Billfish, with Blue, Black and Striped Marlin all frequently caught on their fishing charters. In 2014 this boat landed the year’s largest Marlin in Cabo: the 550 lb Blue was caught with captain Diego and his first mate Bernado. Aside from Billfish, Mahi Mahi, Wahoo and Tuna can all be targeted if desired and in season. The boat is usually rigged to troll three or four lines at a time, with one line always kept hooked to a live bait in the bait tank to be used when necessary. Penn International reels are used on board together with custom rods and 40, 50 and 80 lb test line.

Over the years that they’ve been in business, Solmar VI Sportfishing have grown a stable base of customers who return to them year after year. Their ability to get results on the water as well as building and maintaining a good relationship with their clients has made them one of the Cabo’s most respected charter fleets.

Pre booked Solmar VI weeks before trip . Sent email to Skipper , by way of website ‘Fishing booker ” , but no response . Tried again , no response , After landing in Cabo , went looking for Boat / Skipper at 6am the Morning before , found Boat supervisor, and all was OK for the next morning (thankful I had a Printout from ‘Fishing Booker ’ ...... OK , here comes the curve ball, Next morning at 6:20 am , at the dock , they need to switch boats ??? Have to walk back to Hotel area ( one of our party was just getting over a Broken ankle ) and this turned out to take 12 min’s ! They had Bait , Fluids’, some lunch, but although Mechanically the boat was OK , there was no proper seating ( just two worn , tired trolling seats) , no proper hand rails , extra seating , cup holders , no place to hand our day bags! Unfortunately our hired requested mate , turned out to be another skipper , who didn’t feel up to any instructions on the technics of their fishing ,or their Reels , His answer to a question about the Brake lever on the over size trolling Reels was ‘Don’t touch anything “. Not very Helpful when you’ve got a fish on . He processed to climb up and be with the Skipper for 3 hours , and as a char4ter , we were un happy and getting ready to Munity ! Be lucky that another boat Radioed of tuna , and witch we proceeded to join up with . We got fish, but wasn’t a very enjoyable experience for the Money!

Well, fishing was spotty, probably due to a full moon.  The captain and mate did a great job and when we ran out of time, gave us an extra 1.5hrs to try to beat the skunk.  About half or more of the boats out that day came up empty.  The guys were great and the reception by the coordinator at the doc was very good. At sea it was a rough one, but then, that is open-ocean big-water big-game hunting.  Pulling lines at the very end we had a fish hit, the drag sang, but it short-struck the skirt (probably) and there was no hook-up.  Compared to some of the US operations, the boats may seem a little tired and spartan, but then, this is Mexico.  They knew what they were doing and I’d recommend these guys in a minute.  On the way back into the harbor, my girl friend got some great photos of a magnificent frigate bird taking a thrown bait fish, as well as “Pedro” and another of the the harbor sea lions and brown pelican getting fish on the transom.  At sea we saw a pod of dolphins, a sea lion and a humongous whale in the distance (not the usual California Grey Whale). —So, that was all very cool.  Even though I’ve wanted to Marlin fish in Cabo since I was nine years old (I just turned 59) and did not catch a fish, it was truly one of those great lifetime experiences.  I thank everyone from the bottom to the top of my heart and wish them all safe and prosperous adventures. —=Dan.  (Ames, Iowa, USA)

Boat had mechanical issues before we ever left the marina and hindered us from getting out of the marina to start fishing. We also needed fuel before we left the marina and this took away 30 minutes of our fishing time. We did not catch a fish! Went out the next day with another company and caught 14 fish! The other company was also less expensive!
