Captain John Skiffington of Backcountry Flats Fishing invites you to come explore the special corner of paradise he calls home. Fishing out of Everglades City, he welcomes you aboard to experience some of the finest flats fishing you will ever encounter, in an area that is surrounded by natural beauty and is home to a variety of species who are just waiting to take your bait, whether you are fishing with live bait, artificial lures, or fly.

Captain John’s 18 ft Action Craft FlatsMasters boat is perfectly suited to these shallow waters. Equipped with a push pole, trolling motor, Lowrance HDS-5 Chart Plotter, GPS, and Depth Sounder, the boat has everything you need to fish the deep channels, passes, and back bays in the area.

During your trip you are invited to either hone your fly fishing skills or to use light tackle, light line spinning gear or bait casters as you target Snook, Sea Trout, Redfish, Black Drum, Jack Crevalle, Ladyfish, Mangrove Snapper and Tarpon. Should you choose to fish with live bait, you could be using threadfin herrings, pinfish, mullet, live shrimp, and pilchards, or you could take advantage of the captain’s large collection of artificials that includes jigs, soft plastics, crank baits, spoons, and more.

Whether you are an experienced fisherman angling for a trophy catch or a novice hoping to learn more about flats fishing, Captain John Skiffington would be delighted to have you aboard his boat and share with you the sense of satisfaction that can be gained from spending a day in the backcountry of Southwest Florida

While living full time on Marco Island my wife & I go fishing on our own boat 2-4 times per month,so when we go with a guide,it is to see new areas and learn new fishing techniques, as well as catch fish. John is an excellent captain.  He took us to an area we had never been before and showed us some new ways to catch and think about fishing we had never experienced before and he was able to put us on the fish even though it was a very windy and challenging fishing day. He was friendly, helpful. informative, and we had a good day catching a large variety of fish. His boat and fishing equipment are top notch.  I would recommend John to anyone who likes to go back water fishing.

Captain John tried his heart out to put us into fish but it was’nt going to happen. That’s why it’s called fishing!!! Not catching!!

My day with the capt was pretty ok but not a terrific one…..I understand water temp in the everglades holds the key that either locks up or unlocks the bite BUT I thought we do a lot better than one beautiful black tip shark on a gorgeous day…to be honest I would have liked to have casted more to potential spots holding fish while the capt steered the boat & share his experiences finding fish in the areas we visited while using my personally made stick
and plugs….i love to cast and am expert in the craft but held back my desire since it was my first time in the area and deferred to the capt…....we tried trolling, and live lining bait with only the shark for a full days effort…yet I wont complain because it was my first time to the everglades and feel if a catastrophy didn’t happen then it’s a great day…..I can’t say the capt wasn’t sincere in his efforts but sometimes good intentions arent what we pay for.
