Blachford Lake Lodge
Blachford Lake Lodge is the only fly-in wilderness resort situated on the remote 17 km (12 mile) long Blachford Lake. The lodge is a 25-minute bush plane flight from Yellowknife, the capital of the Northwest Territories and is located north of the East Arm of Great Slave Lake. Yellowknife is easily accessible with a daily jet service from most major U.S. and Canadian cities.
The fishing season in the area starts in June. Departure days depend on scheduled flights, which run on Sunday and Friday. From August 15 – October 9, 2016 and December 23 – April 10, 2017, there are also scheduled flights on Wednesdays. During the summer/ fall season most of the flights depart Yellowknife at 5 pm and return to Yellowknife by 7 pm. A taxi from the main airport to the float base takes about 20 minutes, but due to unpredictable weather conditions we highly recommend all our guests to overnight in Yellowknife on one or better both sides of your trip.
Blachford Lake offers fishing enthusiasts trophy size Lake Trout and Northern Pike! In recent years the winning entries in their Trophy Release Contest were a 38 lb. Lake Trout and a 32 lb. Northern Pike. Walleye (around 4/5 lb.) can be fished on two adjoining lakes, which are a very short walkover from Blachford Lake. There is also Whitefish in Blachford Lake.
As the ice melts off the lake in early June, the fishing is excellent for all species. Throughout June, into early July, fish are generally caught close to the surface. In September the Pike are biting – if it is cold they move to shallow water. In early September the Trout are in deeper water and by later September they come to shallow water to spawn.
Blachford Lake Lodge actively promotes a “Catch & Release” Fish Management Program that includes the use of barbless hooks and fish gloves to ensure the careful and healthy release of all large fish. However, they encourage their guests to enjoy tasty smaller fish for shore lunches or dinners!
