Based in the center of Auckland, Birdwing Fishing Tours depart from several locations depending on what their customers would most like to get out of their fishing trip. Departing from Westhaven Z Pier boat ramp in Auckland center, they give you the chance to fish the area around the Waiheke and Motutapu Islands.

Fishing aboard a 28 ft McLay alloy boat that was built locally, specifically for fishing New Zealand’s waters, they have the speed and reliability needed to fish several areas and make the most of their time on the water. The well-maintained vessel is under MNZ Survey, and is fitted with all the appropriate electronics (Furuno and Raymarine) as well as safety equipment to make sure you enjoy your trip in safety. There is plenty of gear on board to help get you on the fish, including a quick auto release Maxwell anchor for added flexibility.

The team at Birdwing pride themselves on combining old fashioned tenacity with innovative new ideas. They are mad-keen on fishing, and believe in leaving port before sunrise (if you want to) and staying on if the fish are biting. They fish with bait, as well as heaps of berley, and also do soft baiting and fishing with lures if you want a different challenge.

Have to confess that I’m not a good sailor (or a fisherman for that matter) but a 6 am start from Westhaven which began with a life jacket drill and safety briefing immediately put me at ease.  Our skippers Judy and Craig are ocean sailers and it shows.  First stop - Waiheke via Motuihe Channel.  It was chilly as we drifted, so we anchored in the shelter of Te Miro Bay.  Using squid bait and pilchards the action was slow so Judy suggested we move up past Matiatia Bay.  Better luck here as we caught 4 pan sized snapper.  Drifted for a bit then headed towards Mullet Bay, Motutapu where it was decided to anchor in the deeper water (20 m). Very sunny in the afternoon so we were pleased to have the shelter of the awning.  With 4 people fishing, Craig managed to keep us untangled from the burley pot and each other!  Time to head home through the Motuihe Channel where we did some stray-lining.  Hooked 2 Kahawai and then a large snapper.  Fabulous day out.  Thanks Judy and Craig.
