Snap Fishing Ventures - Sports

15 Westhaven Drive
Auckland, New Zealand

Based out of Westhaven, Auckland, Snap Fishing Ventures is a provider of top-level fishing experiences in the Hauraki Gulf. Led by the highly experienced angler Nik (aka Capt Snap), they benefit from over 40 years of fishing experience in the area, and they run two highly effective fishing boats to allow you to sample the fantastic local fishing opportunities.

Snap Fishing Ventures’ sport boat is a fast and very effective fishing vessel. Powered by a 250 HP Yamaha outboard engine that cruises at 25 knots, it does not muck around when reaching the fishing spots. With a very wide beam, this is an ideal fishing platform, and there is plenty of space on deck for everyone to enjoy a hands-on taste of the action. The boat features an enclosed toilet for your comfort when out at sea.

Fishing trips involve using the boat’s speed to go wide and search for workups, when Whales, Dolphins, and Birds work the bait on the surface of the water. This is the most effective way of finding the biggest Snappers, with other potential catches including Kingfish (Yellowtail Amberjack) and the delicious John Dory.

Nik specializes in fishing with soft baits and metal lures, and he and his fishing team proved their prowess in this technique when they won the very first New Zealand Berkley Gulp softbait competition in 2007. With over 12 years experience of intensive lure fishing, he is the ideal person to assist you in setting up your gear, finding the bait and workups, and then fishing them with light tackle and artificial lures.

Not only will Snap Fishing Ventures show you an excellent day on the water, they are also more than happy to advise you on the best ways to prepare your catch for some excellent eating. They also offer traditional accommodation nestled amongst the native Kauri trees in the Waitakere Ranges.  Please inquire when booking if interested.

About the Captain

Nik Key
Auckland, New Zealand
Member since July 2016
Ever since he was a child, Captain Nik has fished the stunning waters of the Hauraki Gulf. With over 40 years experience on the water, he is not only passionate about fishing, but also about being at one with nature on the open sea. With many years’ experience fishing the local waters all year round, Nik has a thorough understanding both of how the area fishes, and why. Nik started fishing with softbaits and metal lures in about 2004, and has never looked back since. He and his team took home the inaugural prize at the first ever Berkley Gulp softbait competition in New Zealand in 2007, and were at the forefront of developing this technique in the local area. Nik takes pride in sharing his knowledge of fishing with softbaits that he gained from 12 years of intensive lure fishing.
