It was a great morning on the water. Went with kids and he was great with them. He was patient and helped with the lines so we all caught fish, which made for great memories.

It was a cool & blustery day… and according to my search online, NOT a good day for fishing. Captain Roy (he works with Capt. Jason Shilling) took me, my California daughter, and my 2 grandsons (ages 12 & 15) out to fish. The 15-year old caught a whopping 7+ pound drum, the largest fish he ever caught, and everybody caught fish. Captain Roy was friendly, patient with the kids, and knowledgeable. The photo doesn’t do it justice, as the fish are much bigger than the photo shows. Of course, we threw back smaller fish, including some bass that put up a good fight. Capt. Roy fileted our fish when we returned to the marina and it was enough to feed 15-20 people. I cooked half of the fish that night and froze the rest. Very tasty!!!

My experience started by making a reservation request for Captain Jason on Fishing Booker.com. Within a few minutes Capt. Jason promptly returned my call. We agreed on a date and time , then he asked me if I needed transportation. Since I was staying in a hotel in downtown New Orleans , I said I would need transport. He immediately gave me a name and phone number of an associate he uses. I arranged transport with (Tony) and also arranged airport transfers.So convenient!  We used him on several occasions as he had extensive local knowledge. On the day of my trip , he picked me up early so I could make a stop or two before we headed to Jean Lafitte where the marina was. It was quite a ways away from the city. Once we arrived at Rick’s Marina I was pleasantly surprised at the amount of supplies and such that were available. Sandwiches, snacks, beverages, and even a cooler for my catch. Everyone was friendly and very accommodating. Capt. Jason was ready for me within minutes. I was very impressed with his professionalism and the fishing vessel and equipment was top notch. I was especially happy with the condition of his rig. When I say it was spotless , I mean you could eat off the decks! As he wisked us towards the fishing grounds you could tell he was very knowledgeable of the backwaters and bayous of the area. I was amazed at the amount of water ways there were out there. He had taken many turns thru the canals and weeds. His knowledge of these waters was impressive.! You could definitely get very lost out there ....  Once we arrived at the first stop he quickly explained to me about how to fish these waters. We had a great time catching many redfish and black drum. Once we caught our limit we continued to catch and release for awhile longer . He said I wasn’t getting off that easy. I appreciated his skills and professionalism. As we headed back , I noticed how well he and his rig were prepared for my trip that day.It was well stocked with baits, sodas, water and plenty of conversation.He is a great guide in these vast waters. When we got back to the dock , he quickly and expertly filleted my fish. All skinned and deboned , bagged and iced for my return trip to Nawlins. My ride was on his way so I went into the marina were I was quickly served my choice beverage and a snack. There was even a pool table for use if you liked. I very much enjoyed my time with Capt. Jason and the crew at Rick’s Marina. It couldn’t have been a better day if I tried. My hats off to y’all !! Then on the way back, Tony took me into a local restaurant where they quickly cooked some of my catch to bring back to the hotel. They made it to my desired method and doneness ! It was delicious. We were caught off guard by an unseasonably cold morning, and Jason saved the day by hooking us up with additional layers and wind protection for the ride out.

Jason knows the area like the back of his hand and has his go-to spots, but he also maintains a network of other captains that he can call on to see what’s biting and where. He was able to use this network to our advantage and we had a pretty awesome day, catching our max in redfish in a relatively short time.

My 13-year-old son and I had a blast despite the cold, Jason was a blast to hang out with and he always made sure we were in the right spot at the right time.

To cap off what was already a great day, we were able to take our catch to a restaurant on Bourbon Street in New Orleans that made us the meal of our lives out of our redfish under what is called the “Catch and Cook” program - check it out. Jason also has recommendations for local restaurants that will prepare what you catch.

Can’t go wrong.

This was a birthday gift for my mother, who has never been on a fishing charter before. She enjoyed the experience immensely and we all had a great time. Captain Jason knew where to take us to catch fish and he was a fun conversationalist. My mother was very satisfied with her birthday gift.
