Mackay Fly & Sportfishing

Mackay QL, Australia

Mackay Fly & Sportfishing is one of Mackay’s most experienced fly and lure fishing guides. They offer guided fly and sportfishing charters on both salt and fresh water. Operated by Skipper Paul Dolan, who has two top 3 finishes in the Bass Pro grand finals, they will put you on any species you want to catch - provided it’s in season. You will get the best advice and Skipper Paul’s undivided attention which will help you land the fish of your dreams.

You will fish aboard his 19 foot Key West center console boat, which is powered by a 140 HP Suzuki DF engine. This boat was purpose built to fish the local waters and has both rear and front casting platforms with room and seating for 4 guests.

Skipper Paul operates another boat - a 13 foot Poly Craft with a full casting platform and seating for 2 guests and was made for Freshwater and Rivers. Both vessels are pretty speedy and can easily get you to the desired fishing spot, as well as move between locations quickly. You will find the boats have life jackets for safety, sound electronics, and a fishfinder to locate the fish.

Mackay Fly & Sportfishing can take you fishing in the nearshore, offshore, and freshwaters depending on which fish you want to catch. Targeted species can include Barramundi, Saratoga, and Sooty Grunter in the freshwater, whereas the saltwater will see you target Golden Trevally, Pink Snapper, Sailfish, Spanish Mackerel, Kingfish and other species available in the local waters. Skipper Paul will provide you with rods, reels, tackle, and lures, and will have snacks, soft drinks, and water available for refreshments.

I have been fishing Hervey Bay for years now and can’t recommend a trip with Fraser coast sports fishing enough!!!
Fishing with paul Dolan is an experience in its self. He is re-lent less in his pursuit to get you into the fish. His knowledge of the bay and fishing in general is second to none. If you are a keen sports fisho wanting to target certain species such as long tail in the salt or Barra in the fresh or salt paul is the man to see. My last trip I ticked to fish of my bucket list thanks to paul. My goal was to sight cast a golden trevally on the flats and paul with with knowledge put us right on the fish…. The cast was made and the rest is history. A fish I will never forget.

We also chased some Barra in the fresh on our second day on charter. Once again paul shared his knowledge of the area as we were willing to listen and learn from this seasoned fisho. Second cast on following Paul’s direction resulted in an epic surface strike with Barra leaping out of the water as it inhaled the frog that’s was presented to it.

These experiences are somethings not many anglers get to see or experience. I can’t thank paul enough for the knowledge he has shared over the years fishing with him and the time and effort he goes to, to put you in the zone and onto that trophy fish!!!
I have fished with paul 3 times now usually for a 2-3 day over the last 4 years and look forward to fishing with him again.

Jump in and fish with fraser coast sports fishing. You will not regret it.

G’day Paul,

Just a quick note to let you know how much I enjoyed fishing with you recently. It’s quite refreshing to meet someone who wears their heart on their sleeve & isn’t scared to voice their opinions as well as actually showing in their actions that they truly have a passion for something.

I did notice the amount of info that you passed on to me over the 2 days was way beyond just about anything I’ve experienced before. I’ve noticed that quite a few of the other guides/operators I’ve fished with seem to either volunteer nothing beyond “cast there”, or jealously guard their secrets. I actually fished with one guide where it was forbidden to look at the sounder to the point of him actually physically blocking your view if you tried! The amount of finer points re feeding habits, tides, moon phases, other species & rigging you spoke about was fantastic as I came away not just having caught my target species, but having learnt from the experience as well. I’ll definitely recommend you to anyone heading your way, as well as be booking with you again if I can get back to Hervey Bay in the future.

Can’t speak highly enough of your operation.
