Captain Mel’s Sportfishing Charters invites you on a trip to explore the iconic waters of Key West. Here you will find year-round action around reefs, backcountry waters, or in far offshore depths where Grouper and Snapper are. Whether you’re a pro or a newbie, Captain Mel will make sure you have a blast on the water.
Captain Mel has been a fisherman his whole life. Having fished around the waters of the Bahamas, guiding anglers around the water of Mexico and the Caribbean, and now Key West, he’s gathered deep knowledge of fish and techniques that work the best. For the past 20 years, Capt. Mel has been putting numerous customers on fish—just have a look at the gallery and you’ll be impressed.
Your vessel for the day is a 28’ custom-built Spencer which the captain built himself. The boat is a versatile fishing vessel that will give you plenty of shade and comfort whether you’re fishing the backcountry fisheries looking for Sharks or fishing offshore for Mahi. The boat is powered by twin 150 HP Yamaha engines and features GPS, a fishfinder, as well as a live bait well and an ice box. Capt. Mel has a selection of fishing gear and you will mostly use freshly caught bait. Trolling or bottom fishing, he’s got what you need.
In summer time, your trip can take you up to 20 miles offshore. If you want incredible fishing action sooner, go around the inshore waters looking for Tarpon. You can choose just one species and fishing technique, or combine several, the captain will take care of the rest. Either way it’s going to be a vacation to long remember!
When packing for the trip, remember to bring food and drinks. The captain will take care of the gear and the fishing license, and will also provide life jackets for kids. You should pack sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, and of course, a camera. At the end of the trip, Capt. Mel will clean, bag, and ice your catch, so you can have it prepared in one of the local restaurants and have a nice dinner with your family.
