Meet Captain Chris Coletta – A Lifetime of Fishing Experience & Passion
Captain Christopher 'Chris' Coletta brings over 40 years of fishing experience and a lifetime of passion to every trip with Coletta Sportfishing. His journey started at the age of 12, fishing alongside his father, Fiore, in Oyster Bay, where he fell in love with the sport. By 16, Chris was already turning his passion into a business—clamming and catching lobsters to sell to local restaurants while cruising the waters, always with Otis Redding's '(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay' playing in the background.
His love for the ocean led him to Hawaii for college, where he trained with some of the most respected charter captains in the world, mastering the art of big-game fishing in one of the Pacific's most demanding fisheries. Even when life took him to landlocked states like Ohio and Arizona, Chris couldn't stay away from the saltwater—taking clients on excursions to Mexico whenever he had the chance.
When he finally settled in San Diego, he knew he was home. With a deep fascination for the local fishery and proximity to Mexico, Chris spent years refining his techniques and studying migratory fish patterns, working alongside some of the best captains in Southern California. He firmly believes that great captains do their homework—understanding the water, the fish, and the ever-changing conditions that make every day on the water different.

Halvdagstur — Kystnært - WANU • 2 voksneI took my son and a few of his buddies that are just getting into fishing. Captian Joe was great and got us on some fish. Sean our deckhand was great at helping out the boys and setting up all the rigs for trolling and bottom fishing. We caught a bunch of bonito, a yellowtail and some rock fish. The current San Diego bait situation is hard for all the whole fishing fleet. I think this is what separates the good captains and boats from the rest. Having good bait the fishing would be easy for everyone, but appriciate the knowledge and expertise of Colleta sport fishing to get us fish without relying on bait. Having a few of the boys first time fishing, the expierence was wonderful and I am sure San Deigo just gained a few more fisherman from the expierence they had. My son is working towards gaining expierence to work as a deckhand and his expierence on this trip with Sean was inspiring for him, so I thank both Joe and Sean for the expierence. That is what fishing is all about, whether catching fish or not, it is all about the expierence... I would highly recommend Colleta sport fishing group to anyone looking for a 1/2 day or full day trip.

The bait situation is making it very difficult for the San Diego Fishing Fleet but like you said we still can catch fish without that luxury. I heard your boy was very interested in becoming a deca fantastic. 3 Timers Tur - WANU - 4:30 PM • 6 voksne • 3 børnWe had the pleasure of joining Captain Joe and Jimmy on our 3 hr evening fishing adventure. We had the most memorable and incredible time ever! Our family of 6, two adults and 4kids ages 13-7. We all caught fish, had great laughs and made memories that will last forever! My daughter(12) hooked a 25lb yellowtail and reeled that thing in better than most men! It was so exciting and she is hooked, just like the rest of us on sport fishing! Till next time!

Captain Joe and Deck Hand Jimmy really took care of us; continuing to take us to the best locations, giving us the best chance to catch multiple fish. Our group had some with fishing experience and some brand new fishers and they both made sure everyone caught something! Thank you guys so much! We would love to go with them again for our future trips!

3 Timers Tur - WANU - 1:00 PM • 4 voksne • 2 børnCapt Joe put us on the fish pretty quickly. We caught a Mako Shark, several Calico Bass and a yellowtail amberjack. We did the 4 hour day trip and it was the perfect amount of time for us. Once we were back in dock Capt Joe filet the fish we wanted and grilled them for dinner that night. Everything was fantastic (the Mako shark was our favorite). Great guide, boat and experience.

Bottom fishing early and trolling later in the trip as the bit was good. Only downfall was we wanted to have fish for dinner that night but had to go to a processor. Not a big deal, jut would have been good to know. Guy were great, boats good. Would definitely go back out with these guys again..
