Captain Chris Oliver is a lifelong Dutchess County resident who has been fishing the bountiful Hudson River since the age of five. What began as a childhood pastime quickly grew into a true passion, especially for targeting the powerful striped bass that migrate through the river each season.
As he grew older, that passion only intensified. Captain Chris purchased his first boat and began running fishing charters as soon as he earned his captain's license. Over time, what started as a love for fishing evolved into a full-time career on the water.
Captain Chris has dedicated himself to understanding the behavior and migrations of Hudson River striped bass and continually refining techniques to successfully target them. Known for his hands-on approach and willingness to adapt, he is always studying the fishery, developing new methods, and sharing his knowledge with anglers of all experience levels.
When the striped bass season winds down, Captain Chris transitions from the river to the offshore grounds, running to blue water in pursuit of yellowfin tuna, bigeye tuna, and bluefin tuna. His experience across both inshore and offshore fisheries allows him to stay on the water year-round and gives clients the opportunity to experience everything from light-tackle river fishing to true big-game battles in the ocean.
His goal on every trip is simple: provide a safe, enjoyable experience and put clients on fish while teaching them skills they can use long after the trip ends.

From the moment we got lines in the water, it was nonstop tuna action. If you’re looking for incredible tuna fishing, this is the charter to book. Not only was the fishing amazing, but the entire trip was unforgettable. We were surrounded by incredible ocean wildlife — dolphins swimming alongside the boat and even whales in the distance. The scenery alone would have made the trip worth it, but the constant action made it even better. Captain Chris is extremely experienced and knowledgeable. He took the time to teach techniques, explain what we were doing, and make sure everyone was comfortable and involved. Whether you’re an experienced angler or it’s your first time tuna fishing, he makes sure you learn and have a great time. He had absolutely everything we needed on the boat — all the gear, equipment, and knowledge to make the trip successful — and somehow still offers some of the most affordable charter prices around. Landon, the first mate super helpful, fun to be around, and kept the energy high the entire trip. He made everything smooth and the whole experience even better. Between the nonstop action, amazing wildlife sightings, Captain Chris’s expertise, Landon’s great attitude, and the great price, this was easily a five-star experience. Highly recommend Keeping It Real Fishing Charter if you want an unforgettable tuna fishing trip.

5 Timers TurGenuinely Captain Chris loves what he does. Every time I’m on the boat with him fishing on the Hudson River it is a highlight I’ll never forget. He will put you all on fish. I’ve gone out with him many times and majority have all been nice weather conditions. One time conditions were rough very windy and rainy, Chris still continued to put us over schools of fish, maintaining great bait presentations, etc. He is absolutely dedicated to his craft. You cannot ever go wrong with booking a trip with this guy. He is checking everything the entire trip. He will tell you to watch specific rods at times when he knows a fish is about to strike, he will give recommendations on how to properly handle releasing these beautiful fish, and most of all his trips make you feel fulfilled. If you want to fish with a captain? It’s Chris.

I have gone out striper fishing on the Hudson with Captain Chris the past two years and again this spring. He is a wealth of knowledge and takes the time to teach you his techniques. I first learned about him by watching his videos on YouTube, where he demonstrates how he ties his rigs and how he fishes for stripers in the Hudson River. 5 Timers Tur (Eftermiddag)Had an awesome trip on the Hudson River! It honestly felt more like fishing with friends than being on a charter. Super laid back, knowledgeable, and willing to help however he could. He even shared tips and spots I can try on my own in the future, which I really appreciated. At the end of the day he sent me home with all the bait we had left too. If you’re looking for a great day on the water with someone who genuinely wants you to have a good time and catch fish, I’d definitely recommend booking a trip!
