Steven Paul has been fishing ever since he was a little kid and guiding people on exciting fishing trips since he was 12. He's been guiding the local waters for the past 5 years, meticulously learning the best-hidden fishing spots. He's a true pro when it comes to fishing, especially Muskellunge. He holds the Tennessee State Record in both weight and length. Not surprising, since he's a 3rd generation Musky angler! He also writes for multiple fishing publications and is active in education anglers new to fishing these great beasts.

Cold front made for tough fishing, but we enjoyed our day and learned so much about muskie fishing. Well worth the long drive down.

    Phenomenal Two Day Trip

Tennessee Musky Guided Trip • 2 voksne

Steve was phenomenal, period. Went into a two day trip with high hopes and left with all expectations exceeded. He patiently went over safety and the basics with us and went to work putting us on fish on fish on fish. With Steve’s help I caught TWO musky y’all, TWO! It’s always a privilege to get to work under people who are truly passionate and talented at what they do. Steve has put in the time and grit to turn a sport into a lifestyle. Can’t wait to come back for another trip!

What a great day! Within the first 2 hours we had 8 follows! 16 on the day - insane. Massive fish sightings all day. One was as big as me :) We slogged it out and even though we didn’t hook any we tried all kinds of speeds, bait sizes and tactics. I can’t wait to go back - I am certain we will get one next time. I can’t thank Steven enough for a truly memorable experience!

Overall the trip was a good time. Steven is a good guy. Great sense of humor and made the trip fun on his own. He was very flexible with time (trip was scheduled until 8pm but he let us stay and fish until it got too dark around 9:45). The only thing I would warn about this trip is to not go into it expecting to catch any fish. Musky are the toughest freshwater fish to catch and Steven warned us that we will probably only get 1-2 bites which we did but both times the fish came off the hook. Also be aware that the method used to fish for Musky’s is pretty taxing physically. Overall great trip though and having the chance to catch a once in a lifetime fish is definitely worth it.

A Daily Times fishing columnist has broken his own state record easily surpassing the nearly 44-pounder he snagged in March 2017. Steven Paul, a Blount County resident and fishing guide, caught the 55-inch-long musky on June 5 in Watts Bar Lake. (Northerners spell the fish’s name muskie, but in the South it’s known as a musky.) Paul said he began casting a Joe Bucher Glide Raider lure when he got an “extremely vicious” strike. “When I set the hook, nothing moved — the fish was so large that it wasn’t even fazed from the hook set,” Paul told The Daily Times. “For a split second I thought I had missed the fish, but then I felt some weight and then it took off like a rocket. “It took a while to get the fish under control. When you have a big one on, you gotta take your time,” he said. After weighing the musky himself, Paul released it back into the water. That means the catch is not an official state record. It has to be weighed on certified scales, which entails taking it to the shore and waiting hours for TWRA (Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency) to arrive, which is guaranteed to kill it. They have to bring scales from Morristown,” “I am a catch-and-release fisherman, especially when it comes to muskies. They are a low-population-density fish, so you have to be a conservationist,” Paul said. “I thought it would be vanity to kill a fish to break a record I already hold, so it was released. That fish is out there swimming around no worse for wear. Might have a sore jaw though. “I knew it beat my record and that was good enough for me,” Paul said. “{/span}I realized after the current state record that you could have the Pope witness your catch and there will still be detractors, so it’s not worth the hassle.” Paul said most monster muskies are found in the Northern United States and Canada. Their finicky nature and reputation as hard to catch has earned the toothy critters the moniker “the fish of 10,000 casts.” A 50-inch muskie is a world-class fish,” Paul said. “Getting one that is 55 inches long is a fish of five lifetimes. I was surprised by its length mostly. I knew it was heavy, but the length blew my mind.”
