Mahi and Tuna Biting This Week

Following up on last week's mahi and aku action, the North Shore pattern is holding strong into November. Off Haleiwa, the trade winds have been coming and going, and early morning has been the cleanest window on the water. The ocean settles between swells, and that first light troll is hard to beat. That is what a Haleiwa fishing charter is all about — one private group, lines in early, and room to run. What is in the mix right now: aku — skipjack tuna — and mahi mahi on the troll, with wahoo and shibi in the same waters. Shibi is yellowfin under 100 lbs. Aku are the blue and white ones, usually 1 to 2 feet long. We are also seeing trevally and bottom fish when we change up the plan. It is a good mix for Oahu deep sea fishing and Hawaii sport fishing this time of year. This is also whale season. Whale watching Oahu runs October through March, and on the water you can sometimes see whales, sharks, and turtles if they choose to show themselves — and occasionally a rare Hawaiian monk seal. If you are looking for a North Shore fishing charter, a private fishing charter Oahu, or a Honolulu fishing charter with a local captain, now is a great time to lock in a morning. Want a slower end to the day? Ask about a sunset cruise Haleiwa trip too. Following up on last week's report, the North Shore pattern is holding as we head into November. Conditions right now off Haleiwa are workable for a Haleiwa fishing charter — trade winds come and go, the ocean settles between swells, and the early morning runs have been the cleanest window for Oahu deep sea fishing. That is prime time for a North Shore fishing charter. What is biting: mahi mahi and aku — skipjack tuna — are the main action this time of year, with wahoo (ono) and shibi (yellowfin under 100 lbs) in the mix on the troll, plus trevally and bottom fish when we change it up. No guessing on species — if it is blue and white and 1 to 2 feet long, that is aku. This is why now is the time to book a private fishing charter Oahu anglers keep coming back for. Whale season is also starting — whale watching Oahu runs October through March — and a sunset cruise Haleiwa run is hard to beat after a day on the water. As a Honolulu fishing charter option based on the North Shore, this is Hawaii sport fishing the personal way: one private group, Captain Matt, no crowds.
