Fishing in Australia

If you’re thinking about casting a line in Australia, fishing charters are here to help. Whether you’re looking for a freshwater experience in one of the 12,000 rivers or lakes, want to discover the riches of the Great Barrier Reef, or fancy an offshore adventure in the Pacific, professional guides have you covered – from coast to coast!

In the freshwater realm, Australia has plenty of unique species for you to target. Brown and Rainbow Trout live in some mountain streams, while Catfish are available in rivers across the country. Australian Bass and different types of Perch pop up in the east of the country, with Saratoga promising an enviable battle in the north and south. With Murray Cod also on the menu in the southeast, you’re all but guaranteed a tasty treat.

Things only get better when you head towards the ocean. The brackish waters of the north and east of the country hold bucket-list fish, such as Barramundi, Australian Salmon, Queenfish, Flathead and more. Out on the reefs, it’s a who’s who of fish species, with a range of Snappers rubbing shoulders with Mackerel, Trevallies and monstrous Queensland Groper. And that’s before you reach the bluewaters, where Mahi Mahi, Wahoo and Tuna give way to Billfish.

Freshwater trips can take the form of on-foot guided tours or boat expeditions lasting anywhere from half a day upwards. Inshore trips are similar, and these two are best recommended for beginners – although experienced anglers will also enjoy some of the monsters on offer. Reef trips are suitable for everyone, with scuba diving also often included. However, deep sea adventures lasting at least 8 hours are reserved for pros, as you’ll be targeting some of the biggest fish in the world.

Depending on where you are in this vast country, you could set off on your Australian fishing charter from a number of points. Perth, as the largest city in Western Australia, is the best in the west. Darwin is the go-to launching point in the north, while Sydney and Melbourne have plenty to offer in the south. However, if you want a bit of everything, then Cairns and Gold Coast in Queensland are the places to be.

Rules & Regulations

Each territory in Australia has its own laws when it comes to fishing regulations. For example, you’ll need a license to cast a line in NSW, Tasmania, the Australian Capital Territory, and Victoria but not elsewhere. Things differ with regards to bag and size limits, too, which is why heading out with a professional fishing charter in Australia is your best bet for staying within the law.

Australia Fishing Seasons

January

This month, the Gamakatsu Team Series for Bream begins. This will continue until July, all along the East Coast. But, truth be told, fishing is on fire wherever you are down under!

February

Catch top species like Blue Marlin and Barramundi this month, as fishing is on fire wherever you go. From the inshore rivers to the reefs, all the way out to the deep waters, there's always something biting.

March

The Pirtek Fishing Challenge has you catching and snapping your fish before releasing them. Join in from any territory and catch the biggest freshwater fish. Fancy saltwater? No problem, it's still going strong.

April

Every Easter weekend is the Australian Snapper Championships. These are held out of Whyalla Marina, and give you the chance of getting in on the incredible reef fishing action this time of year.

May

Join in the Whaleshark Festival at Exmouth to welcome the return of Whale Sharks. Activities, a talent-show, seaside cinema, and more await. Otherwise, make the most of the end of the good weather for reef fishing.

June

While Blue Marlin fishing continues to be great, things are changing when it comes to fishing in Australia. Winter is upon us, so you may be more inclined to take an inshore or freshwater trip.

July

Despite it being winter, there are still plenty of angling hotspots to explore around the country. Inshore and freshwater fishing dominate, but, if the waters are calm, an offshore trip isn't out of the question.

August

Will you catch the biggest Marlin at the Cairns Bluewater Billfish Tournament? Fishing is red hot in northern Queensland, with inshore fishing heating up too. Just be prepared for changeable weather.

September

September to November are some of the best times to target Marlin. Pick a calm day and get out on to the deep waters. You’ll have a great story to tell after a long fight with these predators!

October

The Cardwell Barra Bonanza is a great tournament targeting Australia's favourite fish. After the event, there’s an open-air dinner and live entertainment. Come and make the most of the season closer!

November

The National Fly Fishing Competition is held in Australia annually every November. But, it changes locations from year to year. If you're looking on getting your fish on and exploring new places, this is the time to do it.

December

See out the year in style, as you make the most of the great weather and even better fishing. December is a great time to be in Australia. Fishing for almost all species is hot all around the country!
