Fishing in Cayman Islands

This Caribbean paradise may be better know for finance than fish, but Cayman Islands fishing has all the makings of a world-class day on the water. The island chain sits on the edge of the darkest depths of the Caribbean: the 20,000-foot Cayman Trench. Inshore reefs give way to blue waters within swimming distance of shore. You also have some amazing flats and mangroves, and unique water havens like Stingray City. There’s a lot to pack in on Cayman Islands fishing charters.

How you spend your trip will depend on which island you visit. Grand Cayman is the biggest of the three and has a lot more going on off the water. It also has the majority of the country’s charter boats. Little Cayman and Cayman Brac are much smaller and less populated. They both have some incredible flats and backcountry. Of course, all three islands are stunning, with white sandy beaches and crystal-clear seas. You really can't go wrong if you're looking for beauty.

Types of Fishing

The best thing about fishing in the Caymans is that you can enjoy fun flats action, productive reef fishing, and a serious bluewater bite, all in one day! Most charter captains give you the choice of where to fish. Here are the main ways you can spend your day.

Deep Sea Fishing

You can find Blue and White Marlin, Yellowfin and Blackfin Tuna, Mahi Mahi, and Wahoo pretty much year-round in the Cayman Islands. The best bite is during the hot summer months, with everything except Wahoo hitting their peak in June and July. All three islands have reliable – although not enormous – deep sea fish within easy reach of a half day trip. Grand Cayman is your best bet for big game battles, simply because there are a lot more boats here.

Inshore Fishing

Bonefish and Tarpon are the main targets on flats fishing trips. Cayman Brac and Grand Cayman are best for bonefishing, but the mangroves and inland waters on all three islands hold lots of baby Tarpon. The only place you’re likely to see Silver Kings in the 50-100 lb range is on George Town’s waterfront, where they get fed by crowds of tourists. We’ve never tried fishing here, but we’re pretty sure it’s frowned upon. You also have Permit, Pompano, and Barracuda in the shallows throughout the country. The best time to target these fish is in the heat of summer when the winds are lower and the fish aren’t scared into deeper waters.

Reef Fishing

Inshore reefs straddle the line between the beach and bluewaters throughout the Cayman Islands. They’re home to year-round populations of Jack Crevalle, Mangrove, Mutton and Yellowtail Snapper, Triggerfish, and Nassau Grouper. You can also find some Goliath Grouper swimming around the shallower edges of the reefs. Reef fishing is a great way to switch things up on a full day trip. You can spend the morning battling Billfish, then hit the reefs on your way back to snorkel and catch some tasty bottom fish.

Fishing Techniques

The fish don’t get that big here. Blue Marlin average around 150 pounds and Tarpon rarely top 15 pounds in places you can actually catch them. Don’t let this put you off, though. It means you can enjoy incredible light and fly action for all your favorite fish. Trolling is the most common tactic offshore, while inshore anglers prefer light spinning or fly gear. On the reefs, you will either be jigging or bottom fishing, with the option to try traditional handline fishing, too.

Need to Know

You don’t need a fishing license on a registered Cayman fishing charter. You can also fish from shore without a license, but you have to release all your fish. Certain species, including Sharks, Rays, and Goliath Grouper, cannot be removed from the water under any circumstances. The Islands are an important spawning ground for Nassau Grouper. Because of this, it’s illegal to fish within a mile of any Designated Grouper Spawning Area from November 1st through March 31st. It’s also illegal to fish in any Wildlife Interaction Zone, such as the Sandbar or Stingray City.

During a single day in the Caymans, you can battle Blue Marlin, drop lines for Snappers, fly fish for Tarpon, and still have time to swim with Stingrays. Nowhere else in the Caribbean can you do so much on one trip. Captains here are happy to give you the reigns and let you decide how you spend your day. So jump aboard and take your pick!

Cayman Islands Fishing Seasons

January
Kick off the year with screaming drag as you battle Wahoo offshore. Fish the reefs for tasty Snapper and Triggerfish, or head to the Taste of Cayman Food and Wine Festival to enjoy the nation’s top treats.
February

The Little Cayman Mardi Gras Festival brings the island to life in a flurry of color and dance. Check it out, then fish for monster Wahoo offshore or Bonefish and Tarpon in the shallows.

March

This is your last chance to take on lightning-fast Wahoo offshore. The Mahi Mahi bite starts to pick up and the reefs are bursting with fish. Wherever you go, you’ll land something special.

April

Take part in the exclusive Cayman Islands International Fishing Tournament or visit Cayfest, the country’s biggest arts and culture event. Otherwise, head offshore and bag some tasty Mahi Mahi.

May

The Cayman Carnival Batabano takes over the streets of George Town with parades, live calypso bands, and so much more. Nassau Grouper are open for harvest from May.

June

June is one of the best months to fish in the Caymans. Marlin, Tuna, and Mahi Mahi tear through the bluewaters, while low winds make for dream Tarpon and bonefishing on the flats.

July

Blue and White Marlin, Yellowfin and Blackfin Tuna, Mahi Mahi, Tarpon, Bonefish, Permit, Pompano, Snapper, Grouper, Triggerfish – it’s easier to name the fish you can’t catch in July!

August

The Marlin bite starts to drop off in August, but Tuna and Mahi Mahi are still on fire! Temperatures can be crushing this time of year, so wade out, cool off and try Bonefishing.

September

This is your last chance to bag big Blackfin and Yellowfin Tuna. Skipjack also show up by the dozen in September, bringing a Tuna Grand Slam well within reach.

October

The best thing about the Caymans is that they’re great whenever you go! No one fish is at its best this time of year, but they’re all around in decent numbers. Just take your pick.

November

The first Wahoo show up, joining a ton of Skipjacks offshore. The annual Cayman Islands Pirates Week kicks off with costumes, events, and great family fun. It’s not an event to miss!

December

If all you want for Christmas is Wahoo, you’ve come to the right place! With big fish, warm seas, soft sands, and not a snowflake in sight, it’s the perfect place to spend the holiday season.

Capt took us to the east end of the island where the fish were. Bite was a little slow at first, but crew kept working and we landed a monster tuna. Kids loved every minute.

Kind of a slow fishing time of the year, so have fun in the reef or in the harbor, but donโ€™t expect the big fish this time of year. Still a blast with a Captain like C!!

Be prepared to have to go through some choppy water to get to the leeward side of the island. Charters wonโ€™t go out if it is too rough but it can get bouncy on the windward side!

I did wish we caught more and a variety, but that's how fishing is at times. We faired better than others that didn't catch anything at all. So overall it was a great day. I highly recommend Andrew and Y-Knot

July is a bit slower fishing, so I'd research the best time of year to fish for a better bite. Be prepared with your own snacks if you are particular, and definitely bring a UV dri-fit fishing shirt and a hat to protect you from the sun.

We were lucky. The previous two days were bad for fishing. Summertime (off-season) isnโ€™t the best time for fishing. You will have to be patient and hope that you have a great Captain like Andrew that just has that instinct to find them.

In July- it was pretty hot, I suggest a boat with cover/shade. Most of the ride was calm but getting around the point had about 15 mins of rough waters- so if you get sickness- take Dramamine!! If taking kids- lots of suncreen and try to find a boat with a bathroom and shade because the slow ride out can get brutal from the sun. Overall- fishing was fun and got some good fish which we could recognize from prior snorkeling in the area.

May is a good month for fishing. The boat is comfortable with plenty of shade. Kids like to feed tarpon at the dock where the fish are cleaned. Sharks come in also. Good restaurants near the dock area. Finish a day of fishing with a good meal. Very accessible from the seven mile beach area.

We had a great trip with Outcast! The Captain and mate were fantastic. The boat was perfect for our group of 5. We didn't catch dinner, but they sure tried to put us on the fish (we all caught smaller fish so it was all good). The snorkeling was amazing - do not skip that! The trip with Outcast was the highlight of our week long trip!

Our group of four had a great day fishing with Bobby and his first mate. Bobby found us some great spots to fish and quickly moved on from others that were too choppy or not biting. They even dove for some conch for us. They cleaned our fish and conch so we could take to a nearby restaurant th have cooked for lunch. It was a perfect trip!

Captain Daniel and First Mate Mark were great, knowledgeable hosts - taught us about the area and information beyond fishing. We had a great experience fishing with this crew! The team is extremely knowledgeable and fun. Fishing can be unpredictable but we were able to catch a couple fish which is all you can ask for! Based on the calls the captain made, others out in the water that day didnโ€™t have any luck. This team knew what they were doing. If you have the opportunity to book, do it now!

Five of us went ot for a four hour morning deep sea charter. Our goal was to catch enough fish for a meal and snorkel for some conch. I knew that catching a fish could be a challenge on such a short charter, but Captain Bobby did just that and we came back with fresh Wahoo for the grill. We also had another one on but lost it, had several bite offs and landed a barracuda. We also got our 6 conchs for chowder. Overall we couldn't have asked for more. Thanks Captain Bobby!
