Fishing in Mexico

Mexico fishing charters tick all the boxes on most anglers’ sportfishing bucket lists. From its winding mountain rivers, across the vast lakes, to its two oceans and multiple seas – you won’t know where to look when choosing where to go! This country’s angling opportunities are so vast, that there’s something for everyone.

We’ll start with the bluewater bite. The Pacific’s bays offer up prime Calico, Corvina, Seabass, Jack, Snook, and Roosterfish action. Head to the Caribbean and Gulf side, and it’ll be Bonefish, Permit, and Tarpon. Wherever you are, the reefs will offer up Groupers and Snappers, with pelagic monsters such as Wahoo, Mahi Mahi, Tuna, Sailfish, and Striped, Blue, Black, and White Marlin on offer around the country!

When it comes to freshwater fishing, Largemouth Bass is the name of the game in most places. However, Catfish, Carp, and even exotic creatures like Rainbow Bass, and Tilapia are on offer in some spots. Your best bet for finding a freshwater charter is on the lakes, with Mexican fishing guides few and far between on the rivers.

With so many fishing grounds, it’s no surprise that Mexico fishing charters offer a range of options. In some places, such as the Sea of Cortez or Riviera Maya, the big game action takes place just a few miles from shore. That means that a trip as little as four hours could land you a trophy! However, usually, you’ll see shorter trips tailored to families and beginners, and trips between 6–12 hours for the more experienced.

Rules & Regulations

If you’re fishing from a boat in Mexico, then you’ll need a license. These are often covered by your charter, but not always, so it’s worth checking before you go. Each angler can keep a maximum of five fish in freshwater, and ten in saltwater. However, you can only have five of each species, and one Billfish counts as half your daily limit.

Mexico Fishing Seasons

January

Striped Marlin, Hammerhead Sharks, and Wahoo patrol the deep waters around Cabo. Puerto Vallarta is great for Black Marlin and Sailfish. Inshore, this is a perfect time for Snook fishing in Riviera Maya.

February

Striped Marlin and Sharks bite hard in Cabo San Lucas. Jack Crevalle join the Snook on Riviera Maya’s flats. You can catch the last of the winter Sailfish and Black Marlin bite in Puerto Vallarta.

March

March brings tasty Yellowtail to Cabo, just as Snapper and Grouper show up on the reefs. The first of the Marlin show up in Playa Del Carmen and Cozumel, just as the Billfish leave Banderas Bay.

April

Striped Marlin show no signs of leaving Baja California, and Puerto Vallarta’s reefs are full of fish. In the Caribbean, Permit, Tarpon, Snook, and Jack Crevalle are all around in big numbers.

May

Hundreds of boats swarm the island of Cozumel for the Rodeo de Lanchas Mexicanas (Mexican Boat Rodeo). Meanwhile, fly anglers head to Tulum for the Ascension Bay Permit Tournament.

June

Snook, Roosterfish, Sierra Mackerel, and Jack Crevalle offer epic shore fishing in Cabo. On the other side of the country, Blue and White Marlin, Sailfish, and Mahi Mahi will put your skills to the test in Cancun.

July

July offers the best Tarpon fishing Mexico sees all year long in Cozumel’s shallow flats. It’s not just Tarpon, either. Bonefish, Permit, Snook, and Jacks are all waiting – if you can take the heat!

August

Blue Marlin explode onto the scene in the Pacific, just as the Bisbee’s East Cape Offshore kicks off Cabo’s tournament season. All your inshore favorites are still in town in Riviera Maya.

September

Across the country, locals celebrate Diez y Seis, Mexico’s Independence Day. Crowds gather at midnight on the 15th to utter the grito (shout) that started the revolution. Expect fireworks, music, and dancing.

October

There’s only one event on everyone’s mind: the Bisbee’s Black & Blue. With millions of dollars in prizes and all the biggest names in sportfishing, this is unlike any other tournament on the planet.

November

Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is Mexico’s most iconic festival. Watch costumed crowds parade through the streets after an awesome day offshore in Cabo or fishing the reefs in Riviera Maya.

December

Fancy something a little different this Christmas? How about beaches and fresh Tuna steaks? December has the best Tuna fishing Mexico sees all year, with Yellowfin and Albacore across the Pacific Coast.
