The Portugal fishing scene needs no introduction. This country is known far and wide for its world-class angling opportunities. Tourists visit the westernmost country of Europe to witness the stunning beauty of its cities, taste the sweet local wine, and enjoy the laid-back atmosphere. Fishermen, however, come to Portugal looking for their next adventure and trophy catches.
Portugal is synonymous with premier big game fishing in the deep bluewaters of the Atlantic Ocean. Blue Marlin, White Marlin, Longbill Spearfish, Bluefin Tuna, and Swordfish are all abundant here. In the summer months, grander Marlin join the fray, and the action is fast and furious. Nighttime Swordfishing and Tuna hunts follow closely behind. If you feel like catching your dinner, set your sights on Mahi Mahi, Dentex, Snapper, John Dory, and Bluefish.
Portugal isn’t just about ocean fishing though, and freshwater anglers will have plenty to do here. Trout fishing is big on the mainland, especially in the summer months, and Brown Trout are most sought-after. You can also chase after Atlantic (Iberian) Salmon in the freshwater streams and rivers from March-July. Good old Carp, Largemouth Bass, and Barbel are biting year-round.
There are more than a few places in the country where you can get a taste of the superb fishing action. You’ll find plenty of Portugal fishing charters running out of Azores, Madeira, Funchal, and Lagos. Lima and Minho Rivers are the best spots for excellent freshwater fishing.
Rules & Regulations
When you go fishing with one of Portugal's fishing charters, you don’t need to worry about fishing licenses, as they’re included in the price of the trip. Solo anglers, however, need to do some research and figure out which type of license they need, which can take time and energy. Bear in mind that paper licenses are no longer issued. Instead, everything is done online.
