Fishing in Slovenia

Slovenia is a land of incredible beauty, and though it can easily slip under the radar of traveling anglers, this country has a lot to offer. Go fishing in Slovenia and you’ll get to enjoy pristine lakes and rivers that hide an amazing variety of fish. To that, add gorgeous untouched nature as your backdrop and what’s not to love?

Slovenians take good care of their fisheries, partly because they have such amazing fish in their waters. Marble Trout is the prized catch among fly fishermen, and its Brown, Brook, and Rainbow relatives follow closely behind. Slovenia is one of the best fly fishing destinations in Europe, and its Trout population is one of the main reasons why that’s the case.

Anglers also love to target massive Carp, as well as Grayling, Zander, Barbel, Perch, and Chub in waters all over the country. Cast your line in the Danube River and you might hook formidable Huchen, also known as Danube Salmon. Saltwater fishing in the Adriatic Sea could put you on Mahi Mahi, Pandora, Dentex, and even Tuna.

Because fishing is becoming very popular in Slovenia, there are more and more fishing guides ready to take you out. Full day fly fishing expeditions seem to be the top pick, as well as full day sea fishing trips. You can also find half day excursions, if that’s more up your alley, and some charters also offer affordable shared trips.

Some of the best spots to find a professional guide include Portoroลพ, Kranj, and Koper.

Rules & Regulations

If you want to go fishing in Slovenia, a valid fishing license is a must. You can buy a license from a fishing family (aka fishing society) in the district you plan on fishing in. Visiting anglers can purchase a daily license that’s valid from dawn to dusk or a night license that’s valid from dusk to dawn.

Slovenia Fishing Seasons

January
Winters can get quite cold in Slovenia and fly fishing is on pause, but passionate anglers still have plenty to do. Huchen fishing is at its peak and you can see many anglers trying to catch this fish, also dubbed as Danube Salmon.
February
Spend the first half of the month chasing Huchen and make the most of it before the season closes on February 15. It’s cold outside and snow can make fishing difficult but avid anglers don’t give up easily.
March
Just as Huchen are taken off the menu, Trout are re-entering in the first half of March. To keep things interesting, go out after Carp, and who knows, maybe you hook your next trophy!
April
Fly fishermen love April because it marks the opening of all waterways in the country. This means that Trout are biting left and right, there’s Grayling in abundance, and the weather is getting warmer every day.
May
Marble Trout, Carp, Grayling – the choice is yours in May. There’s so much to target, and so many fishing spots to explore, that it’s hard to choose where to begin. Pike season is also in full swing.
June
Summer is right around the corner but the weather can be a bit unstable – be sure to bring your rain gear. Along with Trout and Carp, you can also go after Wels Catfish, which can grow to massive sizes and put up a good fight.
July
Whatever you’d like to like to target, you can do it in July! Bear in mind that some rivers become crowded with vacationers. Choose your fishing spot wisely and you’ll be rewarded with excellent catches.
August
This is probably the hottest month of the year so fish are more active in the early morning, before the heat kicks in. If you’re in the mood for Carp fishing, head out during the night when they come out to feed.
September
Early fall days mean that everything from Trout and Barbel to Carp and Perch is getting ready for winter. They’ll be gorging themselves in preparation, which is the best news for anglers all over Slovenia. Make the most of this productive period!
October
Marble Trout fishing is open until mid-month so get your fill of the action while you can. After that, you can move straight on to Huchen. If the weather remains mild, you can enjoy solid fishing until the end of the month.
November
Head to Sava Bohinjka for some first-class Huchen action, you won’t regret it! You can also try your luck by targeting Perch, Zander, Pike, and the occasional Trout in the rivers and streams, but expect rainy weather.
December
Even though it’s cold outside, there are many fishing opportunities. Head to Lake Bled for some stunning views and top-notch Carp fishing. Cast a line for Pike or spend a day targeting feisty Danube Salmon, the choice is yours!
